Cancer: Characteristics: Despite the fact there are several hundred different types of cancer, it is still possible to list certain general characteristics. Cancer is a cellular disorder, and so these general characteristics pertain to cancer cells. Growth of cancer cells: First, cancer cells experience uncontrolled and disorganized growth. Normal cells only divide about 50 (fifty) times before they die, but cancer cells enter the cycle of dividing and reproducing, over and over again and never differentiate. In tissue cultures raised in labs, cancer cells lack the contact inhibition exhibited by normal healthy cells. This means, normal healthy cells stop reproducing when they contact each other, or the sides of a culture bowl. Normal cells in a tissue culture grow in only one layer because they adhere to the glass bowl and stop dividing once they make contact with their neighbors. Cancer cells have lost all restraint and grow in multiple layers, most likely because of cell surface changes. In the body, a cancer cell divides to form a growth, or tumor, that invades and destroys neighboring healthy tissue. This new growth, termed neoplasia, is made up of cells that are disorganized, a condition termed anaplasia. The cells are disorganized because they don't differentiate into the tissue of the organ and they never fulfill the function of the organ. To support their growth, cancer cells release a growth factor that causes neighboring blood vessels to branch into the cancer tissue. This phenomenon has been termed vascularization, and some modes of treatment are aimed at preventing vascularization from occurring. Tumor biulding: Second, Cancer cells detach from the tumour and spread around the body. To accomplish this, the cells often must make their way across a basement membrane and into a blood vessel or lymphatic vessel. It's been discovered that cancer cells have receptors that allow them to adhere to basement membranes; they also produce proteolytic enzymes that egrade the membrane and allow them to invade the underlying tissues. Cancer cells also tend to be motile. This may be associated with a disorganized internal cytoskeleton and their lack of intact micro filament bundles. After traveling through the blood or lymph system, cancer cells start new tumor elsewhere in the body. This process is called metastasis. If the original tumor is found before metastasis has occurred, the chances of sure are greatly increased. This is the rationale for early detection of cancer. In fact, sometimes a person isn't even considered to have cancer unless metastasis has occurred. Benign tuners are those that remain in one place; Malignant tumors are those that metastasize. (1 of 7) :52:23
Main cancer types: Carcinoma Cancers: Are cancers of the epithelial tissue, and adenocarcinomas are cancers of the glandular epithelelial cells. Since Epithelelial tissue covers the surface of the body and lines the internal cavities, carcinomas include cancer of the skin, breast, liver, pancreas, intestines, lung, prostate and thyroid gland. These cancer may be spread to other body parts by the lymphatic system. Sarcoma Cancers: Are cancers that arise in the connective tissues, such as the muscle, bone and fibrous conneive tissue. These cancers may be spread to other body parts by the blood stream. Lymphoma Cancers: Are cancers of the lymphoid system. Danger Signs and Symptoms of Cancer. 1 Unusual bleeding or discharge. 2. A lump or thickening in the breast or otherwise 3. A sore that does not heal 4. Change in bowel or bladder habits. 5. Persistant hoarseness or cough. 6. Persistant indigestion or difficulty in swallowing 7. Change in a wort or mole. The Possible Warning Signs of Certain Cancers: Bladder and Kidney: Blood in Urine; pain and burning with urination; increased frequency of urination. Breast: Lump(s), thickening, and or other physical changes in the breast, itching, redness' and/ or soreness of the nipples not associated with breast feeding or menstruation. Cervical and Uterine: Bleeding between menstrual periods; unusual discharge; painful menstrual periods; heavy periods. Colon: Rectal bleeding, blood in stool; changes in bowel habits ( persistent diarrhea and or constipation). (2 of 7) :52:23
Endometrial: Same signs as Cervical and Uterine above. Laryngeal: Persistent cough; hoarse throat. Leukemia: Paleness; fatigue; weight loss; repeated infections; easy bruising; bone and joint pain; nosebleeds. Lung: A persistent cough; sputum with blood; heavy chest and or chest pain. Lymphoma: Enlarged, rubbery lymph nodes; itchy; night sweats; unexplained fever and or weight loss. Mouth and Throat: A chronic ulcer of the mouth, tongue or throat that does not heal. Ovarian: Often no obvious symptoms until it is in its later stages of development. Prostate: Weak and interrupted urine flow; continuos pain in lower back, pelvis and or upper thighs. Skin: Tumor or lump under the skin, resembling a wart or an ulceration that never heals; moles that change colour or size; flat sores;lessions that look like moles Stomach: Indigestion and pain after eating; weight loss. Blood in vomit. Testicular: Lump(s); enlargement of a testicle; thickening of the scrotum; sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum; pain and discomfort in a testicle or in the scrotum; mild ache in the lower abdomen or groin; enlargement or tenderness of the breasts. Treatment: Immunotherapy: Although it is possible to produce monoclonal antibodies that will seek out a specific type of cancer cell, actually, the developement of cancer signifies a failure in cell-mediated immunity. Most likely cancers cells do have altered cell membrane antigens that normally subject them to attack by T cells. Whenever cancer develops, it would seem that T cells have not been activated. If this is correct, then, the use of lymphokines might awaken the cell-mediated immunity and lead to destruction of cancer. Interferon was the first type of lymphokine therapy to be investigated. Unfortunately, the results (3 of 7) :52:23
in general have been disappointing. However, interferon has been found to be effective in upto 90% of patients with a type of leukemia known as hairy-cell leukemia (because of the hairy appearance of the malignant cells). The interleukins are also being clinically tested. In one technique being used, T cells are withdrawn from the patient and activated by culturing them in the presence of an interleukin. The cells are then reinjected into the patient, who is also given doses of interleukin to maintain the killer activity of the T cells. This type therapy shows some promise but is still regarded as experimental. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a combination of drugs, one of each which has it's own specific effect. Certain types of leukemia and various cancers of the lymphatic sysetm are often effectively treated by this means. A combination of drugs is required because cancer cells can become resistant to therapy when only one drug is used for a time. In some instances, it appears that the cell membrane of resistant cancer cells contain a carrier that pumps the drug out of the cell. Chemotherapy is a brutal attack on all cells in your body. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells and good healthy living cells. It is a gamble that the chemo will kill more cancer cells than healthy cells. Chemotherapy can permanently destroy a patient's ability to produce sperm. If you want to have children in the future, sperm banking is suggested for men taking chemotherapy before the chemo treatments begin. Surgery, Radiation and/or Chemotherapy Tumours can be surgically removed, but there is always the danger that malignant tumours have already metastasized (spread). Therefore, when a growth is malignant, surgery is often preceded by or followed by radiation therapy. Radiation destroys the more rapidly dividing cancer cells but causes less damage to the more slowly dividing normal cells. Chemotherapy is another means of trying to catch any stray cells left behind when a growth is malignant. A combination of drugs is given, each one of which has its own specific effect. Certain types of leukemia and various cancers of the lymphatic system are often effectively treated by this brutal means. A combination of drugs is required because cancer cells can become resistant to therapy when only one drug is used for a time. In some instances it appears that the cell membrane of resistant cancer cells contains a carrier that pumps out the drug. Cancer pictures of Immune System killing a cancer cell (4 of 7) :52:23
Below is a scanning electron microscope photograph of a cancer cell being destroyed by the T- Cells of the human immune sytem. Before: A fully intact cancer cell surrounded by the immune systems killer t-cells. The cancer cell is surrounded and attacked by the killer T-Cells of the immune system. Scanning electron microscope pictures shows killer t-cells attacking the cancer cell. Notice the tenticles of the cancer cell. After: Notice how the cancer is completely flattened and totally destroyed. During the killing process, granules in a T-Cell fuse with the cell membrane and release units of the protein PERFORIN. These combine to form pores in the target cell membrane. Thereafter fluid and salts enter so that the target cell eventually bursts. A strong immune system can kill cancer cells. Different Drugs: There are amny different types of drugs which are given by cancer. Some in combination with a chemotherapy, some in combination with other drugs and some without anything else. They all decrease cancer. (5 of 7) :52:23
Aminoacid and vitamin cocktail: Cancer research teams determined that a cocktail of ascorbic acid (vit. C), lysin, prolin and epigallocatechin-gallat (EGCG), a catechin from green tea extract, rapidly decrease the growth and the metastasis from cancer cells. The combination from vit. C, lysin and prolin got a strong antimetastatic and antiproliferative effect on different cancerlines in cellcultures. EGCG got a growth decreasing effect on cancer cells in cellcultures. So the idea was to combine these substances to an anti-cancer-vaccine. The way to beat cancer: you must have the will to fight and live. If you do not possess any of these two qualities, then you might just be beat by cancer. The will to live: Some people, even though they say they want to live, do not want to live. Deeply hidden in their subconscious mind they do not wish to live. Some people who have lead terribly tragic and sad lifes may not have the will to live in their subconscious. People who have had a hard life may also be missing the will to live. You must be very true to yourself when you look deep inside to see if you have the will to live. If you do, you are well on your way to winning the battle against cancer. Learn your Opponent and learn it well: Read everything you can about cancer. Look at all methods of attackingthis desease, including modern medical techniques, natural medicine techniques, herbal therapy treatments and so on. Join support groups relating to cancer. In order to slay cancer, you need an army of support, encouragement, knowledge and understanding. Get ready for attacking cancer: Use all the information you got to make a plan how you will fight against cancer. Decide which tools are the best for you and start attacking cancer. Think positive and have no fear. Realize that theres no way back or to stop until you are the only survivor left standing. Start attacking cancer: Use all your medicines, herb formulas etc.(exactly as prescribed) knowledge, believe, and get extra outside support and start your battle. At times you will have to use all your might to hold on. Never loose hope, even if the doctors say theres nothing more they can do to help you. Many people are using various alternative medicne treatments for cancer along with their conventional medical care. Lungcancer live: (6 of 7) :52:23
