3 Conference Description and Objectives This conference is designed for physicians, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, nurses and allied health professionals involved in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. Upon completion of this symposium, the participants should be able to: Describe the typical diagnosis, treatment and prevention of benign conditions of the colorectum, specifically diverticulosis and diverticulitis, benign and premalignant colorectal polyps, and hemorrhoidal difficulties. Review novel therapies in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Describe cancer screening in IBD. Discuss health care maintenance issues in IBD pertaining to appropriate vaccinations and bone health. Analyze the effect of IBD on fertility. Distinguish negative pregnancy outcomes associated with IBD. Identify medications used to treat IBD that should be avoided during pregnancy. Evaluate the use of other medications to treat IBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Identify that colorectal cancer is the third-most common cause of death in women. Review that colorectal cancer is potentially preventable when high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy is performed. Describe which colorectal cancer screening modalities should be ordered, when and by whom. Identify patients who qualify for risk assessment for hereditary colon cancer. Describe the basics of hereditary versus familial risk. Examine the ever-growing list of hereditary colon cancer syndromes and how to manage at-risk patients. Discuss the surgical options for colon and rectal cancer. Describe the issues in colon and rectal cancer treatment that are unique to women. Identify the role of radiation therapy as an adjunct to surgery and in the palliation of inoperable or recurrent colorectal cancer. Review benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy for Stage III colon cancer. Discuss role for adjuvant chemotherapy in high-risk Stage II colon cancer. Review perioperative therapy (neoadjuvant and adjuvant) for rectal cancer.
