1 CANCER FACT SHEETS: STOMACH CANCER Estimated age-standardised rates (World) in the world (per ) At a glance WHO Western Pacific Region China Less developed regions World More developed regions IARC Member State (24 countries) WHO European Region European Union (EU-28) WHO Region of the Americas India WHO South-East Asia Region WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region United States of America WHO African Region Males Females Incidence Mortality Stomach cancer is the fifth most common cancer overall, after cancers of the lung, breast, colorectum, and prostate. In 2012, worldwide, there are estimated to have been new cases of stomach cancer (6.8% of all incident cancer cases). This constitutes a substantial change since the first estimates in 1975, when stomach cancer was the most common neoplasm. More than 70% of stomach cancer cases occur in developing countries ( cases in 2012: in men and in women), and half of all cases worldwide occur in eastern Asia (mainly in China). The 2012 age-standardized incidence rates (per population) are about twice as high in men as in women, ranging from 3.3 cases in western Africa to 35.4 cases in eastern Asia in men, and from 2.6 cases in western Africa to 13.8 cases in eastern Asia in women. Stomach cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in both sexes worldwide, with an estimated stomach cancer deaths in 2012 (8.8% of all cancer deaths that year). The highest estimated 2012 stomach cancer mortality rates (per population) are in eastern Asia (24 deaths in men, 9.8 in women), and the lowest are in North America (2.8 deaths in men, 1.5 in women). Mortality rates are also high in both sexes in central and eastern Europe and in Central and South America
