5 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Program Goal Advances in treatment for several types of blood cancer are improving outcomes for many patients. However, new therapeutic strategies are also adding to the challenges for nurses who care for these individuals. Treatment adherence and disease control may be undermined by the combined challenges that come with current treatments, various aspects of the healthcare system and ubiquitous financial concerns. This symposium will use case studies to explore physical, psychosocial, economic and cultural barriers to adherence. Discussions will include providing clinical trials education for under-represented populations, dealing with the double-edged sword of truth-telling, and weighing in on the ethical use of online social networking sites. Attendees will gain insights into patients perceptions of their disease and treatment and learn practical strategies for helping patients adhere to treatment in this complex era. Target Audience This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with blood cancers. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to: Describe emerging trends in the advancement of treatment for blood cancers Define treatment adherence challenges Identify ethical challenges in helping patients with treatment adherence Formulate education and communication strategies to address nursing management challenges Continuing Education Information Nurses and Healthcare Professionals Approval for nurses has been obtained by the LLS National Office under provider number CEP 5832 to award 1.75 continuing education contact hours through the California Board of Registered Nursing. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), provider number 1105, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education Program (ACE). Approval Period: 12/ /2011. LLS maintains responsibility for the program. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers will receive 1.75 CE clinical clock hours. Upon completion of this program and submission of the activity evaluation, a certificate of completion will be issued to you via or US mail within 30 days of receipt.
