1 Annual Oncology Symposium: Personalized Medicine CME CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION Friday, May 8, 2015 Glaser Auditorium Swedish First Hill 747 Broadway Seattle, Wash.
2 Needs statement Personalized medicine is defined by the National Cancer Institute as a form of medicine that uses information about a person s genes, proteins and environment to prevent, diagnose and treat disease. Breakthroughs in molecular biology research have enabled genomic testing on a patient s cancer which can provide vital information about the treatment options for that individual and increase his or her chance of survival. Cancer care is rapidly evolving to a model where the patient s individual genomic profile is utilized in defining approaches to risk assessment, prevention, screening, early diagnosis, therapeutics and survivorship. Ultimately, the unique attributes of the person, and his or her cancer, will determine appropriate interventions, as opposed to focusing solely on the site of anatomic origin. These methods are still in early stages and many centers do not have the knowledge of these research programs and treatment options, creating a need to educate those involved in the care of cancer patients about these new technologies, tools and approaches to improve the outcomes of cancer patients. Additionally, while the biomedical treatment of cancer is advancing, the medical community often fails to address the needs of the whole patient and their families, including psychological and psychosocial problems worsened by the disease. Recent research has proven the positive effects of addressing these and other nonmedical issues, with a resulting improvement in patient outcomes. Due to limited skill training in this area during medical school, there is a need to provide further education, tools and techniques to all health care professionals involved in the care of cancer patients. Through didactic lectures and multidisciplinary panels, this symposium will review the tools and techniques health care professionals can and should utilize to address not only the medical needs of cancer care, but the overall needs of the whole patient and their families to ultimately improve patient care and outcomes. Course description Personalized medicine is a disruptive innovation, part of the paradigm shift from volume-based to value-based, reactive to predictive, and passive to participatory health care. The goal of this symposium is to introduce personalized medicine to all health care professionals involved in the care of cancer patients, emphasizing the double meaning: one, caring for the whole patient, i.e., addressing the socioeconomic, psychological, environmental and integrative medicine needs of patients and their families; and two, using genomic and epigenomic alterations to identify personalized approaches to cancer risk assessment, prevention, screening, diagnosis, therapeutics and survivorship. Participants will learn practical applications for integrating genomic medicine, research and holistic approaches to personalize patient care. Accreditation Accreditation with commendation Swedish Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA PRA Category 1 Credits Swedish Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP prescribed credits Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. Determination of credit is pending. Nursing CE contact hours 7.0 nursing contact hours will be provided by Swedish Medical Center Clinical Education and Practice, an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Education Approval & Recognition Program (CEARP), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. 4 Course objectives At the conclusion of this symposium, the participant will provide better patient care through an increased ability to: List three obstacles associated with traditional clinical trial designs in patients with cancer, describe the features of next generation clinical trials in patients with cancer and name two regulatory issues that may significantly impact the development of clinical trials in patients with cancer Review rationale for combined endocrine therapies, describe likely mechanisms of endocrine resistance and discuss second generation only development targeted to resistance mechanisms Describe three ways in which genomic research can contribute to oncology care and identify the potential impacts of genomic testing in health care disparity Identify at least four of the six characteristics of high quality care (safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable); distinguish advance directives from plans for care, DNR orders and Comfort Measure Only orders; and recognize potentially valuable clinical goals in caring for patients who are facing the end of their lives, such as: completion of affairs and relationships, a sense of well-being, affirming inherent dignity and honoring and celebrating their lives Review genomic medicine and palliative care recommendations with expert faculty Review comparative effectiveness research and how it applies in oncology, apply approaches to estimate the comparative effectiveness of genomically driven cancer care and discuss how payment models can be used to improve the evidence base for genomically driven cancer care Explain, in broad terms, the basic technology used in cancer genomics; describe the utility of genomic testing in cancer care and devise a strategy for practical implementation of genomic testing for cancer patients Review the impact of the human microbiome on cancer and discuss immunologic impact of the gut microbiome Review the basic biology of glioblastoma cancer stem cells, discuss the concept of high throughput screening for cancer stem cell inhibitors and recognize the clinical trial design for personalized medicine utilizing combination therapy based on high throughput screening for cancer stem cell inhibitors Review the role of genomic medicine in cancer care with expert faculty and discuss practical applications for integrating genomic medicine, research and holistic approaches to personalize patient care Discuss treatment guidelines to provide whole patient care, utilize complementary treatment methods in the treatment of cancer care and review the effects of cancer treatment on patients through patient cases Location Swedish Medical Center is located at 747 Broadway in Seattle, Wash.
