1 ABBREVIATED MRI FOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING what you should know & how to prepare Abbreviated Breast MRI [ ]

2 What is Abbreviated Breast MRI? Abbreviated Breast MRI is an additional tool to screen for and diagnose breast cancers, and is used in combination with screening mammography. A referral from a healthcare provider is needed prior to scheduling. Abbreviated Breast MRI is a screening exam meant for women with a family history of breast cancer and/ or those with dense breast tissue. The lower cost and shorter scan time sets Abbreviated Breast MRI apart from traditional Breast MRI, making this a favorable choice for women seeking additional screening options. Abbreviated Breast MRI is not covered by health insurance; however, the out-of-pocket expense for this screening can be covered by health savings or flexible spending dollars. To obtain the exact cost of this screening, please call our billing office at or complete the Request Estimate form on our website, estimate

3 How you should prepare Please review the MRI metal safety checklist on our website: Arrive minutes early to complete registration Bring a valid photo ID Bring your favorite CD to listen to during the exam Let us know about any of the following: Any metal in your body Claustrophobia Kidney problems Pregnancy - known or possible Previous reactions to MRI contrast Recent chemotherapy (within 30 days) What happens during your exam You will be asked to change into a gown or scrubs. Jewelry, watches, hair clips and possibly dentures will need to be removed. All personal items will be kept in a secure locker outside of the MRI room. The technologist will give you headphones so you can listen to music during the exam you may bring a favorite CD with you or listen to a radio station of your choice. The technologist will place an IV in your arm and position you on your stomach on the scanning table. Your breasts are placed into a depression in the table, which contains coils that detect the magnetic signal.

4 What happens during your exam, continued After an initial series of images have been taken, contrast will be injected into the IV line that was previously placed, and an additional set of images will be captured by the MRI scanner. The entire imaging session takes approximately 15 minutes, and there is no pain associated with the exam. What happens after your exam The MRI images will be interpreted by a boardcertified radiologist (physician) who specializes in breast imaging. A report will be sent to your healthcare provider who will then contact you to discuss the results. American College of Radiology & Society of Breast Imaging: Recommendations for early breast cancer detection Annual mammograms for women 40 and older, continuing as long as a woman is in good health. Breast self-exam (BSE) is an option for women starting in their twenties. Women should know how their breasts normally feel and report any breast change promptly to their healthcare provider. Clinical breast exam (CBE) performed by a healthcare provider every three years for women in their 20 s and 30 s, and every year for women 40 and older. Women at high risk (greater than 20% lifetime risk) should have an MRI and a mammogram every year. Women at moderately increased risk (15% to 20% lifetime risk) should speak with their healthcare provider about the benefits and limitations of adding MRI screening in addition to a yearly mammogram. To calculate your risk, visit
