Nutrition can be a hard topic to understand and know what is fact and myth. For a long time we were taught that nutrition could be followed by using the Food Pyramid. Now, the Food Pyramid is not what is used. We can follow MyPlate. MyPlate can be followed with this image: With this view we are able to have a better visual as to what is needed for daily nutrition. If we look at nutrition throughout the years, we will see that portions have changed significantly. Following a nutrition plan early and continuing that nutrition throughout your life will help fight against illness and disease. A healthy diet is described by Nutrition.gov as: A healthy eating pattern is one that provides enough of each essential nutrient from nutrient-dense foods, contains a variety of foods from all of the basic food groups, and focuses on balancing calories consumed with calories expended to help you achieve and sustain a healthy weight. This eating pattern limits intake of solid fats, sugar, salt (sodium) and alcohol. Nutrition and exercise are building blocks for a healthy lifestyle. Sometimes, those things are learned too late, and diabetes becomes a risk. Type 2 diabetes can be delayed and/or prevented with a healthy lifestyle and proper nutrition. Prediabetes doesn t always mean that someone will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, it can be managed. Day to day care is important and on Diabetes.org day to day care is listed as: Choosing what, how much, and when to eat Getting physically active Taking medicine (if your doctor prescribes it) Checking your blood glucose (the main sugar found in the blood and the body's main source of energy). Also called blood sugar. (if your doctor prescribes it) Going to your appointments Learning all you can about diabetes

Learning about what you can eat, and how to plan your plate can be simple and without special tools. If you have your circular dinner plate, make an imaginary vertical line down the middle. Then, an imaginary horizontal line meeting to the vertical line. This make three sections in the plate. The largest section should be filled with non-starchy vegetables. One small section can have grains and starchy vegetables. Then, the last small section should have protein. Adding a serving of fruit and/or dairy (both if your meal plan allows) completes the meal. On the go containers are made that can help with making the right choices. Portion control is crucial in maintain health, but with a diabetic meal plan, portion control is a must. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with nutrition and exercise will help in all aspects of life, and will keep you healthy. Sources:

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime When breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the 5-year survival rate is 98% The Symptoms of Breast Cancer: Nipple tenderness, signs of a lump near the breast or underarm Change in texture of skin or pore enlargement Sudden, unexplainable change in the size or shape of breasts, swelling and/or shrinkage especially if these symptoms occur in only one breast Asymmetry of breasts An inward or inverted nipple Skin of areola or nipple turns scaly, red, begins to well or has ridges Discharge from the nipple, especially clear or bloody Breast Cancer Myths A lump in the breast means cancer. -Truth: A lump should never be ignored, but only a small percent are actually malignant (cancerous) Men do not get breast cancer -Truth: Men can get breast cancer just as well as women, they even have a higher mortality rate Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread -Truth: A mammogram is the best way to detect breast cancer in an early stage, it cannot cause cancer to spread If breast cancer runs in your family, you will likely get breast cancer as well -Truth: A family history of breast cancer may increase your risk, but only about 10% of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer actually have it in their family's history Risk Factors for Breast Cancer Being a female of an older age Personal history Personal history of benign breast disease Family history in a first-degree relative (mother, daughter, or sister) Inherited BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes Breast tissue density; dense breasts mean higher risk Excessive exposure to estrogen over a long time Exposure to radiation Obesity Alcohol consumption

Mammograms Available Free or at Low-Cost -Most insurances and even Medicare will cover the cost of mammograms. -**Go to site to find a screening provider near you** CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) provides the following programs: Clinical breast exams Mammograms Pap tests Pelvic exams HPV tests Diagnostic testing if results are abnormal Referrals to treatment Having Kids According to Medical Director Jay K. Harness, if a woman has her first birth at the age of 35 or older, there is a small increase for the risk of getting breast cancer. Those who have their first birth by the age of 18 have a lower risk. This is not a guarantee, but the data seems to point in that direction. However, those who have a child through invitro, the hormones that are used to stimulate ovulation can also increase the chances of getting breast cancer because of overstimulated breasts. Ways to Help Decrease Your Chance of Breast Cancer Choose estrogen-only hormone therapy after having a hysterectomy Getting a prophylactic oophorectomy done Routine Exercise Getting a prophylactic mastectomy Less exposure to estrogen (ex. prescriptions that include estrogen) Not Factors in Getting Breast Cancer Taking prescriptions to lower cholesterol Smoking cigarettes (or second-hand smoke inhalation) Having an abortion Making sudden diet changes your body is not used to Using deodorants Sources:

What is skin cancer? It is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. This occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells triggers mutation genetic defects that lead the cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. Damage is generally caused by ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) from the sun or indoor tanning beds. Skin Cancer is the most common of all cancers and begins in the skin. Over 3.5 million cases are diagnosed each year. Most common cells in the skin are called keratinocytes. Basal and Squamous cell skin cancers are by far the most common cancers of the skin. Found on parts of the body exposed to the sun often and over a long period of time, i.e. neck, face, and head Unlikely to spread to other parts of the body if detected and treated; Basal Cell Carcinoma Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Melanocytes are cells that create the brown pigment that provides skin its color. Moles are non-cancerous growths. Melanoma skin cancer is the most deadly of skin cancers, but is curable in its early stages; if untreated it will spread to other areas of the body that may be unreachable by treatment. Things to know: Typical locations for Males: chest and back Typical locations for Females: legs, neck, and face Light skinned males and females are more at risk than those with darker skin because the pigment melanin helps block harmful UV rays to an extent. Sunburn will increase the risk of cancer, but UV exposure without sunburn can raise skin cancer risks. Others risks include: Family histories of skin cancer...know YOUR SKIN! Amount of moles, irregular, and or large moles on the body Amount of time spent outdoors Medications may suppress the immune system or make skin more sensitive to sunlight ~How to prevent the overexposure of sun on your Skin The America Cancer Society adopted the phrase, Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap Slip on a shirt Slop on sunscreen Slap on a hat Wrap on sunglasses to protect eyes and skin around the eyes Beware of translucent fabric if it is see through, UV rays can penetrate the skin. Limit sun exposure by seeking shade whenever possible. Avoid the hours of 10am to 4pm when UV rays are the strongest.

Be especially careful on the water, the beach, and in the snow because sunlight is reflected off of these surfaces therefore increasing UV exposure. Read sunscreen labels carefully and apply as directed. Remember that sunscreen alone is not enough protection from the sun. No sunscreen is waterproof! Ask for help for tough to reach areas. Do not avoid these areas. Protect your eyes with UV blocking sunglasses. Look for labels that say, UV absorption up to 400 nm or meets ANSI UV requirements. Teach kids about sun safety. Limit their exposure, cover up, and generously apply sunscreen. ~How to protect your skin Talk to your physician about regular skin checks at your annual physical. Self-check head to toe as often as possible Face a mirror and check the face, scalp, ears, neck, chest, and belly. Check under breasts, underarm areas, both arms, the tops and palms of the hands, in between fingers and fingernails Sit down and check the front of thighs, shins, tops of feet, in between toes, and toenails. Use a hand mirror to look at bottoms of the feet, front and back of the legs, buttocks, genital area, and lower and upper back. Take a picture and keep a record of differences. Report them to your physician.

What is it? : Heart disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina), or stroke. According to statistics it is also the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. Risk Factors: High Blood pressure High Blood cholesterol Diabetes and Pre-diabetes Smoking Overweight or Obese Physical inactivity Family history of Heart Disease History of preeclampsia during pregnancy Unhealthy diet Age (55 or older for women) Prevention: Don t Smoke or use Tobacco o Chemicals in tobacco can damage your heart and blood vessels leading to atherosclerosis. Exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week o Physical activity helps you control your weight and can reduce your chances of developing other conditions that may put a strain on your heart, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. Eat a heart-healthy diet o Eating a healthy diet can reduce your risk of heart disease. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can help protect your heart. Beans, other low-fat sources of protein and certain types of fish also can reduce your risk of heart disease. Maintaining a healthy weight o Being overweight, especially if you carry excess weight around your middle, ups your risk of heart disease. Excess weight can lead to conditions that increase your chances of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

Get enough quality sleep o People who don t get enough sleep have a higher risk of obesity, High blood pressure, Heart attack, diabetes, and depression. Adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of good sleep a night. Get regular health screenings o High blood pressure and high cholesterol can damage your heart and blood vessels. Regular screening can tell you what your numbers are and whether you need to take action. Your blood pressure should be around 120/80. So Take Action and don t be a part of another Statistic!!!!! 11 Injury Risks All sports have a risk of injury. In general, the more contact in a sport, the greater the risk of a traumatic injury. However, most injuries in young athletes are due to overuse. Most injuries occur to ligaments (connect bones together), tendons (connect muscles to bones) and muscles. Stress fractures can also occur from overuse. However, the areas where bones grow in children are at more risk of injury during the rapid phases of growth. In a growing child, point tenderness over a bone should be evaluated further by a medical provider even if there is minimal swelling or limitation in motion. Most frequent sports injuries are sprains (injuries to ligaments) strains (injuries to muscles), and stress fractures (injury to bone) caused when an abnormal stress is placed on tendons, joints, bones and muscle. Contact your pediatrician if you have additional questions or concerns. To reduce the risk of injury: Time off. Plan to have at least 1 day off per week from a particular sport to allow the body to recover. Wear the right gear. Players should wear appropriate and properly fit protective equipment such as pads (neck, shoulder, elbow, chest, knee, and shin), helmets, mouthpieces, face guards, protective cups, and/or eyewear. Young athletes should not assume that protective gear will protect them from performing more dangerous or risky activities. Strengthen muscles. Conditioning exercises during practice strengthens muscles used in play. Increase flexibility. Stretching exercises before and after games or practice can increase flexibility. Stretching should also be incorporated into a daily fitness plan. Use the proper technique. This should be reinforced during the playing season. Take breaks. Rest periods during practice and games can reduce injuries and prevent heat illness. Play safe. Strict rules against headfirst sliding (baseball and softball), spearing (football), and body checking (ice hockey) should be enforced. Stop the activity if there is pain. Avoid heat injury by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise or play; decrease or stop practices or competitions during high heat/humidity periods; wear light clothing. Sports-Related Emotional Stress The pressure to win can cause significant emotional stress for a child. Sadly, many coaches and parents consider winning the most important aspect of sports. Young athletes should be judged on effort, sportsmanship and hard work. They should be rewarded for trying hard and for improving their skills rather than punished or criticized for losing a game or competition. The main goal should be to have fun and learn lifelong physical activity skills.

*Maintaining a healthy lifestyle to combat illness and disease starts with the knowledge of prevention. The sections published here are general guidelines to prevention of illness/disease. Any indication that any of these apply to you should be discussed with your physician, as well as any changes to dietary and lifestyle plans. This is for informative purposes only.
