1 CANCER FACT SHEETS: ALL CANCERS EXCLUDING NON-MELANOMA SKIN CANCER Estimated age-standardised rates (World) in the world (per ) At a glance United States of America European Union (EU-28) More developed regions WHO European Region WHO Region of the Americas IARC Member State (24 countries) WHO Western Pacific Region China World Less developed regions Males Females Incidence Mortality In 2012, worldwide, there were 14.1 million new cancer cases, 8.2 million cancer deaths, and 32.6 million people living with cancer within 5 years of diagnosis; 57% (8 million) of those new cancer cases, 65% (5.3 million) of the cancer deaths, and 48% (15.6 million) of the 5-year prevalent cancer cases occurred in the less developed regions. The overall age-standardized cancer incidence rate is almost 25% higher in men than in women, with rates of 205 and 165 cases per personyears, respectively. Cancer incidence rates among males vary by a factor of almost 5 across the various regions of the world, with annual rates ranging from 79 cases per males in western Africa to 365 cases per males in Australia/New Zealand (with high rates of prostate cancer constituting a significant contribution to the latter). There is less variation among females, with annual cancer incidence rates varying by a factor of about 3, ranging from 103 cases per females in southcentral Asia to 295 cases per females in North America. WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region WHO African Region WHO South-East Asia Region India There is less regional variability in mortality than in incidence; the mortality rates in more developed regions are 15% higher in men and 8% higher in women than the corresponding rates in less developed regions. In men, the rate (per ) is highest in central and eastern Europe (173 deaths per year) and lowest in western Africa (69 deaths per year). In contrast, the highest rates in women are seen in Melanesia (119 deaths per year) and eastern Africa (111 deaths per year), and the lowest rates are in Central America (72 deaths per year) and south-central Asia (65 deaths per year).
