2 Second Annual Update on Gastrointestinal Cancers A Multidisciplinary Approach to Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment OVERVIEW This course consists of lectures, case presentations, and Q&A panels with expert faculty. The course is broken into five sessions, each covering gastrointestinal cancer in a specific area of the GI tract. Speakers in each session will cover research and the latest standards of care including new innovations for screening, diagnosis, and treatment modalities including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. This course will increase participant familiarization with current guidelines and recommendations, and focus on the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. IDENTIFIED PRACTICE GAP/ EDUCATIONAL NEEDS Gastrointestinal cancers include several malignancies, including those of the esophagus, hepatobiliary system, pancreas, stomach, colon, and rectum. The complexity of these diseases requires a highly integrated, multidisciplinary approach to care, including gastroenterology, surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and other services. The most effective up-to-date screening techniques, diagnostic modalities, and treatment options are essential in caring for patients who have or are suspected to have a GI cancer. The clinical information provided in this course will assist clinicians in maximizing their participation in the multidisciplinary approach to care and, ultimately, in optimizing care and outcomes for individuals who require preventive, diagnostic, and/or therapeutic services for a GI cancer. TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience will include gastroenterologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and other health professionals involved in the care of patients with esophageal, hepatobiliary, gastric, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES It is intended that this Continuing Medical Education (CME) activity will lead to improved patient care. At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 1. Identify new technologies and modalities in the screening, surveillance, and diagnosis of relevant gastrointestinal cancers. 2. Offer patients non-invasive, interventional, medical, and surgical approaches in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. 3. Identify emerging new chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and radiation therapy options and approaches in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. 4. Apply their enhanced understanding of the benefits of the multidisciplinary approach to the screening, diagnosis, treatment, and palliation of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Accreditation The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA Credit Designation Statement The College of Physicians and Surgeons designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Technicians are encouraged to check with their accrediting organization to ensure they accept AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM.
