Based on the most recent year for which statistics are currently available from the National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is estimated that 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in 2007, as well as an estimated 62,030 additional cases of in situ breast cancer. In addition, approximately 40,460 women are expected to die from breast cancer. A multidisciplinary approach among the involved healthcare providers is required to maximize the therapeutic options and streamline coordination of care for patients with suspected or diagnosed breast cancer. Primary care providers and obstetricians/gynecologists are an essential part of a patient s access to appropriate care and will benefit from an educational program to help them keep abreast of the latest information about the diagnosis, treatment, and management of breast cancer, including when it is appropriate to refer his/her patient to a comprehensive breast care center for diagnostic assessment and follow up. In addition to the topics on breast surgery and medical oncology designed for both radiologists and non-radiologists, the course will also provide radiologists with in-depth coverage on breast magnetic resonance imaging (interpretation, malignant and high risk lesions, benign findings, and guided biopsy). TARGET AUDIENCE Primary care physicians; obstetricians/gynecologists; radiologists; nurse practitioners; physician assistants OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to: Discuss the current guidelines for breast imaging using mammography and ultrasound for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer. Discuss the clinical indications for and applications of breast MRI examinations. Counsel breast cancer patients about surgical treatment options, e.g., breast conservation vs. mastectomy, breast reconstruction. Evaluate the medical therapies for the treatment of breast cancer. Promote avenues by which primary care providers and obstetricians/gynecologists can work effectively with radiologists, surgeons, and medical oncologists to optimize the care of their patients with breast cancer. EDUCATIONAL METHODS and EVALUATION Lectures F Case Presentations F Panel Discussions F Syllabus F Question & Answer Sessions Evaluation by questionnaire will address program content, presentation, and possible bias.
