Main contents What is Zàng Xiàng Theory Five Zàng (six Zàng) Six Fŭ Six Extraordinary Fŭ The inter-relationships among Zàng and Fŭ
Learning outcomes Understand the concept of Zàng Xiàng theory. Understand the functions and characteristics of five Zàng, Six Fŭ and Six Extraordinary Fŭ. Understand the inter-relationships of Zàng and Fŭ. Understand the inter-relationships between Zàng Fŭ and sense organs, body tissues, body liquids, emotions, colour, smell, taste, climate, sound, etc.
Zàng Xiàng Theory Zàng/ 藏 Internal organs Hide inside Store Xiàng/ 象 Shapes/ characters Phenomena/ manifestation Classification
No author, no date, black box, Viewed 21 Feb What s inside? Zàng Xiàng Theory What s the meaning of Zàng Xiàng Hide inside but manifest outside Deduce the conditions of Zàng Fŭ according to the manifestations. Classify similar things based on some rules.
Zàng Xiàng Theory Manifestations are different, inside conditions will be different. Vice versa. Easchiff, 21 Oct 2007, Round lake in Green Lakes State Lake Park, New York State. 7 Zàng Xiàng Theory Observing the external manifestations, then the internal organ conditions will be understood and what the root problem is will be diagnosed. Huáng Dì Nèi Jīng Líng Shū How to select a good watermelon? No author, no date, no title, Viewed 21 Feb Watermelon-Step-5-Version-2.jpg
What does Zàng Xiàng Theory Tell Us fire Tongue complexion Blood vessel SI cold Ears Hair Bone BL Kidney Lung Heart Liver Spleen GB Sinew Nail eyes wind LI ST Body hair Nose Skin Muscle lips dry mouth damp
What does Zàng Xiàng Theory Tell Us Internal organs link each other. Internal organs link with external body tissues, orifices, emotions and all other external manifestations. Body links with natural environment.
Zàng Fŭ Five Zàng Heart, Liver, Spleen, Lung and Kidney Zàng Fŭ Six Fŭ Six Extraordinary Fŭ Small Intestine, Gallbladder, Stomach, Large Intestine, Bladder Brain, Marrow, Bone, Blood Vessels, Gallbladder, Uterus
What s the characteristics of Zàng Fŭ Zàng: Store essence and Qi and can t leak. They should be filled but shouldn t be solid. Fŭ: Transport food and can t stop. They should be solid but shouldn t be filled. Extraordinary Fŭ: Their structure is like Fŭ but their function is like Zàng. So they are cavity but the function of them is to store. No author, no date, no title, Viewed 21 Feb internet-business-important-word/
Zàng and Fŭ are correspondent to each other Zàng belongs to Yin while Fŭ belongs to Yang Zàng and Fŭ are correspondent to each other: Five Elements Zàng Fŭ Wood Liver Gallbladder Fire Heart/Pericardium Small Intestine/ Triple Burner Earth Spleen Stomach Metal Lung Large Intestine Water Kidney Bladder
Lung Lung is the Premier of the body No author, 18 Sep 2007, Grant Llewellyn, Viewed 21 Jan
Lung Lung is called Canopy. It is in the top position in the five Zàng. It is the sky to cover/shade all other Zàng. No author, no date, no title, Viewed 21 Feb
Lung Lung weighs 三斤三两 (around 823g). It has 6 leaves and 2 ears. Nan Jing (Classic of Difficulties) The Yīn/Yáng nature of Lung compared with other Zàng: Lung is the Yīn in the Yáng. The back being Yáng (compared with abdomen), the Yīn in the Yáng is Lung. Huáng Dì Nèi Jīng The Five Element nature of Lung: Metal.
Lung Functions of Lung Governs Qì and respiration Controls dispersing and descending of Qì Helps Heart to control Xuè and blood vessels Dredges and regulates water passages Sets up the physiological rhythm
Governs Qì Lung Governs breathing. Lung works together with other organs to support the generation and circulation of Qì in the whole body (especially Zōng Qì).
Governs Qì Breathe in clear air Qì goes internal goes downwards (entering & descending) Breathe out dirty air Qì goes external goes upwards (exiting and asending )
Governs Qì Lung Governs Gathering Qi (Zōng Qì). How is Gathering Qi ( Zōng Qì) made of? Where does Gathering Qi ( Zōng Qì) stay? What are the functions of Gathering Qi ( Zōng Qì)?
Governs Qì Lung supports the distribution of all kinds of Qì in the whole body. Lung is the basis of Qì. Huang Di Nei Jing
Summary of Lung Governs Qì Supports the generation of Qì Breathe in clear air Supports the generation of Zōng Qì Supports the smooth moving of Qì in the whole body Lung regularly and rhythmically breathes in and out, which is very important to keep the healthy moving of Qì in the whole body (asending, descending, out and in)
Controls Dispersing and Descending Qì Dispersing includes going up and distributing externally. The functions of dispersing include three parts: To discharge the dirty Qi in the body To distribute the Jīn Yè and Gŭ Qì which come from spleen to the whole body, especially distribute them externally to skin to nourish and moisten skin To disperse Wèi Qì to skin to regulate the opening and closing of pores. Transform Jīn Yè into sweat and discharge it.
Controls Dispersing and Descending Qi Descending dosen t only means going down. It also means clearing. The functions of descending also include three parts: To inhale the pure Qi from environment Because Lung is the highest organ, it should push the pure Qi and Jīn Yè, Gŭ Qì coming from spleen down to nourish other organs To clear respiratory tract To support Large Intestine Qì to descend.
Controls Dispersing and Descending Qi But the main direction of Lung Qi is descending. When the Lung suffers from Qì rising contrary to its regular course, quickly consume bitter herbs to drain it. Huang Di Nei jing
Helps Heart to Control Xue and Blood Vessels Help Heart to produce Blood ( Xuè). Help Heart to keep Blood (Xuè) running smoothly in blood vessels. Lung controls all channels. (Pulse examination TCM diagnosis methods)
Dredges and Regulates Water Passages Lung looks like the mountain in our body. The rivers start there and flow down to the sea. Regulates water passages from the following 3 ways: Respiration Sweating Urination
Sets Up the Phylsiological rhythm Rhythm includes: Respiration rhythm Heart beat rhythm Body rhythm Daily rhythm Season rhythm
Lung Lung is the official functioning as Prime Minister. Orders or moderation or rhythm comes from it. Huang Di Nei Jing
Lung How can we decide the conditions of Lung Emotion sadness, grief, worry. And Lung is the house of the Corporeal soul (Po). Tissue Disperses essence and Qi to skin. Manifests on body hair. Body fluid nasal mucus Sense organ nose.
Pò ( Corporeal Soul) (How to understand the following natures of Pò) The Corporeal Soul is a physical soul in charge of all physiological processes The Corporeal Soul is responsible for feelings and sensations The Corporeal Soul is Yin in relation to the Ethereal Soul (Hún) The Corporeal Soul dies with the body (whereas the Ethereal Soul survives death).
Pò ( Corporeal Soul) (How to understand the following natures of Pò The Corporeal Soul is formed at conception A newly born baby s life revolves completely around the Corporeal Soul. The Corporeal Soul is the entering and existing of the Essence Through the Corporeal Soul, the Essence plays a role in all physiological processes. The Corporeal Soul is affected by worry, sadness and grief.
Tissue What is the healthy Skin (including skin hair) condition? What are the functions of Skin? No author, no date, no title, Viewed 26 Feb /
Sense organ What are the effects of Lung on nose? What are the effects of nose on Lung? What are the healthy nasal mucous conditions? No author, no date, no title, Viewed 26 Feb Long-Fairy-Tales
