Key words: Sinfoin, Alflf, Quercho, crcss chrcteristics. 1. Introduction In Mediterrnen res, light lm production is sed on concentrtes from wening to slughter nd ewe s mngement hs een intensified s herd size is growing. However, grzing good qulity forges, s lflf (Medicgo stiv) llows good performnce of lctting ewes (1). Sinfoin (Onorychis viicifoli) grzing could e n interesting lterntive s it hs high protein nd condensed tnnins contents. Condensed tnnins re secondry compound of plnts widespred in the plnt kingdom nd they hve een studied to reduce methne production (2). Moreover, condensed tnnins re nturl ntioxidnts. Oxidtion is one of the min resons for qulity spoilge in met products. To postpone it, the ddition of ntioxidnts hs emerged s strtegy. Nturl or synthetic ntioxidnts cn e dded to the niml s diet, which is one of the most effective wys to inhiit lipid oxidtion in ft (3). The use of nturl ntioxidnts is more desirle, s synthetic ones hve een ssocited with potentil humn risks nd consumer rejection (4). However, condensed tnnins hve complex nd vried structure nd their effects depend on this structure nd dose given to the niml. 1
8 The im of this study ws evlute the effect of the feeding tretment during lcttion nd the inclusion of CT from Quercho in the concentrte during fttening on the performnce of light lms nd on the lipid oxidtion of met. 2. Mterils nd Methods The experiment ws conducted in the fcilities of CITA Reserch centre in Zrgoz. A flock of 207 Rs Argones ewes ws mted t the end of Octoer y nturl service. Ewes were stlled round prturition. From this flock, the multiprous single-ering ewes (n=63) nd their mle lms (n=63) were selected for the experiment. After lming, ewe-lm pirs were rndomly ssigned ccording to ewe s ody-weight (BW: verge 46.6 kg) nd ody condition score (BCS: verge 2.43) to one of the next three tretments during the lcttion period: - TMR: Ewes nd lms were housed nd received totl mixed rtion d liitum (n=21). - Sinfoin: Ewes nd lms rottionlly grzed in sinfoin pddocks (n= 21). - Alflf: Ewes nd lms rottionlly grzed in lflf pddocks (n=21). All suckling lms hd ccess to commercil concentrte in order to void digestive prolems fter wening (40-45 dys of ge). From wening to slughter (t kg BW), hlf of lms of ech tretment during the lcttion period ws fed with commercil concentrte (11.9 MJ/kg FM, 17.5% crude protein; Control). The other hlf ws fed with commercil concentrte with 5% of Quercho (SYLVAFEED ByPro Q, Adil Nutrition. Giron, Spin), with 75% of condensed tnnins (11.7 MJ/kg FM, 17.5% CP; QUE). The lms of ech tretment were llocted rndomly in two pens. Wter nd minerl locks were lwys offered d liitum. Lms were weekly weighed t 9.m. Averge dily gins (ADG) were clculted. Concentrte intke ws recorded weekly y pen. When the lms reched the trget slughter weight, they were slughtered weekly, ccording to guidelines of the Council Directive 86/609/EEC (Europen Comunities, 1986) in the experimentl ttoir of the Reserch Center. Just fter slughter, hot crcss weight (HCW) ws registered nd kidney ft depots were weighed. Crcsses were hung y the Achilles tendon nd chilled t 4 ºC for 24 h in totl drkness. After this time, cold crcss weight (CCW) ws registered nd dressing percentge ws clculted (CCW/BW t slughter). Then, the Longissimus thorcis et lumorum (LTL) muscle ws extrcted nd sliced into seven, 2.5-cm thick smples, one to determine the ft intrmusculr (Ankom, NY, USA) nd the others to determine the lipid oxidtion during storge. Six smples were rndomly plced in 6 trys, wrpped with oxygen-permele PVC film nd kept in drkness (4 ºC) for 2, 5, 7, 9, 12 nd 14 dys. When ech storge time finished, the smples were individully vcuum-pcked nd frozen (-20 ºC) until lipid oxidtion nlysis. To determine the lipid oxidtion, TBARS nlysis ws crried out s descried (5), results were expressed s mg of Mldonldehyde (MDA) per kg of muscle. Dt were nlysed using the SAS sttisticl softwre (SAS V.9.3). Weight gins, fttening length, concentrte intke during fttening nd crcss chrcteristics were nlysed through nlysis of vrince with generl liner model (GLM procedure), with the type of feeding during lcttion, the inclusion of QUE in the concentrte nd its interction s fixed effects. Body weight nd lipid oxidtion of LTL muscle were nlysed with mixed model (MIXED procedure) using mixed models for repeted mesures including the feeding during lcttion, the inclusion of QUE in the concentrte, the storge time nd their interctions s fixed effects nd the lm s rndom effect. Results were reported s lest squre mens nd their 2
9 ssocited stndrd errors (SE). Multiple comprisons mong tretments were performed y the Tukey s method. Differences were significnt for P<0.05 nd tendencies for P< Results nd discussion The interction etween the feeding during the lcttion nd the inclusion of QUE in the concentrte during the fttening period ws not significnt. Thus, results re presented for the min effects seprtely Production prmeters During lcttion, prmeters were similr mong tretments (P>0.05), except for verge dily gin (ADG) (P<0.10). Sinfoin lms hd greter ADG thn TMR lms (P<0.05), wheres Alflf lms hd intermedite vlues. In the fttening period, the feeding in lcttion period did not hve effect on lm performnce (Tle 1). The Slughter BW, however, tended to e different etween Sinfoin nd their counterprts (P<0.10). Tle 1. Crcss weights nd dressing percentge were greter for TMR, intermedite for Sinfoin, nd lighter for Alflf lms (P <0.05). 11 Quercho during fttening period hd no effect on lipid oxidtion, lthough it ffected muscle ntioxidnt cpcity (12) Conclusions Sinfoin grzing of lms with their dms during lcttion period improved slightly weight gins during this period nd hd positive effect on the met shelf life. It would e interesting to study the use of sinfoin in the fttening period. In our conditions, the ddition of Quercho in the fttening period tended to increse lm s weight gins; however, it did not hve ny effect on the met shelf life. Future studies should e done to nlyse the ntioxidnt cpcity of the muscle in lms fttened with different doses of Quercho. References 1.
