The truth about my father, Duncan Storrar, the Q&A hero THE AUSTRALIAN MAY 12, :00AM Caroline Overington Associate Editor Sydney Aztec Major at his uncle s car workshop in Geelong, where he works as a spraypainter. Picture: David Geraghty
Mr Storrar with baby Aztec in a family photo. A sign supporting Mr Storrar in Gosford tweeted by the ABC s Amanda Collinge.
The Go Fund Me web page set up to raise funds for Mr Storrar. The ABC presented him as a new national hero and a low-paid Aussie battler, but Duncan Storrar s son, Aztec Major, paints a very different picture of his father. Mr Major, 20, said he couldn t believe it when he saw people donating tens of thousands of dollars to a Go Fund Me page set up for Mr Storrar, who captured the nation s attention when he appeared on the ABC s Q&A on Monday, saying he didn t make enough money to take his kids to the pictures. He doesn t deserve it, said Mr Major, who uses his mother s surname. He s used drugs. He s not the person he s making himself out to be. Mr Major said he moved in with his father when he was 17 because I guess I wanted to get to know him but it was while I was living with him, he was using drugs, and I got addicted with him and that was the start of my downward spiral. He said it took all his courage to break free of his father and I ve been clean since November I ve earned myself an apprenticeship as a spray painter in Geelong, he said. I keep myself out of trouble. I came to the conclusion the best solution was to cut all the crap out of my life. I had to cut him out. I sort of see him as the kind of person I don t want to be.
Mr Major said he didn t watch Q&A but had seen the response. To put it in my best words, it s been eating away at me, all this money being donated to him, it s ridiculous, he said. The public should know what kind of person he is. It s good that people want to give money but they should give it to a good cause. I don t need it. I m working now. The Cancer Council would be my suggestion. Mr Major s mother died from breast cancer when he was a child. The revelations about Mr Storrar s troubled life came after Q&A producer Amanda Collinge described him in a tweet as a new national hero. Mr Major s comments also leave the man who set up the GoFundMe page revealed as Samuel Fawcett, a Community and Public Sector Union member who works with CSL in Victoria with what he described as a bit of a problem. Mr Fawcett told The Australian he ed Mr Storrar early yesterday to tell him how much had been raised at the time, the tally was about $12,000; as of 8pm it was $46,880 and to ask if he wanted to share some of the money with other charities. He said Mr Storrar told him he had some ideas of his own about what he wants to do with the money (and) it was more private giving. Asked if he intended to direct all the funds to Mr Storrar, Mr Fawcett said: People have donated with us with the intention of the money going to him so I guess that s what has to happen. But it s a good question. In a post later in the day, Mr Fawcett told donors that Mr Storrar was overwhelmed and wanted to donate some of the money, plus create a safe place for the funds that will assist in (his kids ) education. Mr Storrar has said he has two daughters, aged 8 and 6. The Department of Human Services urged Mr Storrar to declare the cash as a lump sum, so it could be assessed for income purposes. The Australian reported yesterday that Mr Storrar received about $400 a week in benefits, plus he made $16 an hour from sporadic truck driving. If his combined income last year was $30,000, and the Go Fund Me page delivers him more than $46,000, he may have to start paying tax, or indeed child support for the two daughters has with ex-partner Cindy-Lee. The DHS said the lump sum was likely to be classified as a one-time gift, but we would still encourage anyone with a change in their circumstances to contact us to ensure they don t risk a debt.
The Australian Taxation Office agreed that crowd-funding of this type was generally considered a gift, and a gift is generally not income. Mr Major told The Australian that his mother Susan had a troubled relationship with Mr Storrar. I only lived with him until I was four, and then mum passed away when I was nine (she died of breast cancer) and I went to live with my grandparents until he (Mr Storrar) came back into my life and basically sent me in a downward spiral, Mr Major said. My main memory is mum, although she was sick, and she must have felt horrible because of the cancer, she did try so hard to give me a father figure in my life, so she took me to see him; and another time, she set up these visits, at the Bethany (where separated parents can see their children) and he wouldn t rock up. So we d sit and wait and dad wouldn t turn up. So yeah, the only memories I have are all negative. A big one (memory) is he camped in his car for three days outside our house and when we came out, he followed my mum s car. Tamika Drew, whose is Cindy-Lee s daughter, told The Australian she didn t want people giving away their well-earned money to a man who does not deserve it. There are lots of things he has done that upset me, Ms Drew said. I saw things as a kid living with him from when I was seven that I shouldn t have to see. Mr Storrar did not respond to a request for comment yesterday. He told the ABC he was having an anxiety attack when he asked questions on Q&Abut gave up smoking weed years ago and had never drunk alcohol. An ABC spokesman said Mr Storrar s appearance on the show went through the normal audience selection process.
