3 F ROM THE ROM THE SCR P RESIDENT Dear friend s, I hope you have all had a good summer, and that you re looking forward to the Michaelmas Term events. It seems a long time ago now, but we had an interesting Easter Term, with one post-dinner talk, a summer outing to Cameron s Brewery in Hartlepool, and our usual end of term BBQ, but with a special emphasis, since we used this occasion to mark Maggie Prestwich s retirement as Senior Tutor with a gift from the SCR and a few words. This term, we look forward to seeing our new Senior Tutor, Dr Ian Latham, at our events. Our first event will be the joint SCR/MCR buffet, on October 4th. Do join us if you can to welcome especially the new members of the MCR. A fortnight later, on October 18 th, there will be a talk on the idea of the Green Man, by Steve Cousins, and on November 1 st, the students who received SCR bursaries for travel during the summer vacation will dine with us, and then give short presentations on what they did with the money! After dinner on November 15 th, Martin Roberts, the Historic Buildings Inspector for English Heritage in the North-East has kindly offered to talk to us about the Bridges of Durham. Our last formal of term, on November 29th will be a festive dinner (perhaps too early to say Christmas ), and be on the same evening as the AGM (to be held before dinner). It may be worth mentioning at this point that we hope to discuss at this meeting the use of and the internet for keeping you informed of SCR activities, and we would love to have a large number of people there to express opinions about that and any other matters. Outside the normal run of SCR events, could I also draw your attention to a special event on Monday, October 22 nd at 2pm, when Pippa Greenwood (of Gardeners Question Time and a Trevelyan alumna) will be receiving an honorary degree in the James Knott Hall. It would be lovely for her to have a large audience, so anyone who can attend is invited to do so. I look forward to seeing many of you this term. With best wishes Liz Tavner President of the SCR

7 U NIVERSITY 175 TH NIVERSITY 175 WEEKEND ANNIVERSARY How do you give lunch to almost 2,000 people on a Saturday in September? Put up a marquee on the Racecourse, get Ramside Hall in to cater and pray that it doesn t rain. And, of course, your prayers were answered as it was gloriously sunny and warm between the 7 th and 9 th of September for the University s 175 th Anniversary Alumni weekend. Following the success of Trevs own 40 th Celebration last year, it was perhaps too much to ask for as many Trevs alumni to return a year later, but in the end a good 50+ turned up with assorted partners and an excellent time was had by all. Things kicked off with a reception and buffet in College on the Friday evening. Saturday was a day for visiting old haunts and wandering around departments, all of whom had put on extensive programmes to entertain and inform their former students. The Cathedral also extended a special invitation to alumni to Evensong in the afternoon. The main social events, were of course, the lunch (long queues, but nobody seemed to mind) and the Special Dinner in the evening. Some colleges put on their own dinners in house, but Trevs, along with most of the others, gathered in the marquee again, with tables grouped by College. After an excellent meal a Ceilidh band then entertained the throng with music and dancing to the early hours. The whole day was made very much easier by a special coach service set up to ferry people between the various locations. So, altogether a marvellously successful weekend with attendance well in excess of original estimates. 8 ART MATTERS This term s Exhibition is entitled The Things in Between and features work by Allan Archibald. It opens with a Preview on Sunday 14 October at a.m. and continues until 30 November. Please attend the Preview if you are able and if not do look in during the duration of the show. Gateshead born Allan trained in Art History and Fine Art at Edinburgh University in 1960 s. He subsequently taught art in secondary schools. From the 1980 s he was based in Weardale but continued to combine teaching with exhibiting his work in Scotland and Northern England in both one man and joint exhibitions. Since leaving teaching in 2004 he has resumed a full time commitment to art and the work on show, paintings, prints and drawings are from this recent period. Allen says his art works grow one out of the other, colours and shapes being recycled and reformed, sometimes they derive from observation of landscape, sometimes from memories and experiences and sometimes pure fantasy. The traditions, history and methodology of art and artists through the ages are important to him, most especially those of the early 20 th Century such as Picasso, Klee and Kandinsky. Whilst not imitating their styles and forms his images pay homage to these pioneers. This promises to be a show with a difference, please come! JULIAN TREVELYAN AWARD This Annual Competition for an original creative art work in any media was well supported and yet again we were surprised by the range and high standard of talent revealed. We awarded three prizes in each of two categories. 9 Trevelyan College Arts Committee P IPPA GREENWOOD Gardener s Question time panellist, Pippa Greenwood, a Trevelyan Graduate, will be receiving an honorary degree on Monday October 22 nd. The ceremony will be held in the James Knott Hall between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. Members of the SCR are warmly invited. Pippa followed her degree in Botany at Durham with an MSc in Crop Protection from Reading University, and then joined the staff at RHS Wisley. In 1988 she went to work for the BBC, becoming a regular on both BBC2 s Gardeners World and BBC Radio 4 s Gardeners Question Time, where she is the resident bugs expert. She is described by BBC Radio 4 as one of Britain s leading plant pathologists.

10 As if the above were not enough, she is also an award-winning author of gardening books, with 19 titles to her credit. In addition she regularly writes pieces for both the national press and gardening magazines. TREVELYAN COLLEGE SCR BURN S NIGHT SUPPER THURSDAY 24 TH J ANUARY FOR 7.15 PM Please join us for our annual Burns Supper with a traditional Scottish menu. As usual festivities will include a piper, haggis, whisky and jovial company. Price per person: xxxx including a contribution to Student Travel Fund. (Black tie, kilt or lounge suit) S TEVE COUSINS Those of you who were lucky enough to have toured Brancepeth Castle with the SCR a few years ago, will remember Dr Steve Cousins. He is the archaeologist turned potter who is one of the artists living and working at Brancepeth Castle. As well as producing magnificent ceramic pieces Steve is passionate about Britain s ancient Green Man mythologies, even to the extent of naming his business Green Man Pottery and using various images of the Green Man in his work. Steve has agreed to come and speak to the SCR about the Green Man on October 18 th.
