UCLAN came into UTCMediaCityUK to deliver two Drama Production Workshops to our Year 13 Students on Friday 25 th May. Industry professional Robbie Sandison who worked on Coronation Street for 30 years showcased the new UCLAN course Drama Production BA (Hons); The workshops introduced the course to our Year 13 students and gave them the opportunity to operate cameras, floor manage and also be extras as part of the workshop. This was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 13s to consider an accelerated degree path in just 2 years, to fill skills gaps identified by the BBC and ITV. Robbie Sanderson said what a great day, the UTC students would be perfect for the new course at UCLAN, they already have the ambition and drive to work in this industry.
Raphe Barber Year 11 student Raphe has been selected as one of 18 young people nationally to join Everton Football College in September He will study BTEC Sports whilst training every day with Everton Coaches to eventually join the team. We are super proud of Raphe s achievement and wish him well with his future career goal of becoming a professional footballer. His Dad sent UTC a lovely message that we wanted to share with you about Raphe s journey and the determination he has shown to reach his dreams. Mr Barber said whilst on trial at Manchester City, following a trial at Manchester United, Raphe was diagnosed with Osgood Schlatters Disease on both knees, making it very painful to play any sport and so he was released by City. This growth disorder only started to clear up during August 2017 when he had just turned 15 years old, so Raphe had been prevented from taking part in any sport for nearly two and a half years. Very frustrating for somebody who loves physical activity. Raphe wanted to move schools so decided to join UTCMediaCityUK in Year 10. It was a difficult decision for Raphe to make, leaving his old school to start at UTC, as it was towards the end of Year10 and he had to give up two of his favourite subjects - Drama and Business Studies. But when he arrived for his first day at the UTC he had a smile on his face and luckily he also knew some of the other students. Raphe settled in very quickly and the new ethos of the College seemed to suit Raphe. He knew he had to try and catch up in some of his subjects, but he developed a love for the Media side of the College, especially TV & Film. He was also been greatly affected by the influence of his Chemistry Teacher, Mr Ashton, who has made the biggest impact on his school days, giving him back his confidence and belief in himself, to the extent that I never thought Raphe would ever talk about going to University or trying so hard to pass his exams; something he would never have done at his former school. Raphe was a talented footballer, until the Osgood Schlatters Disease on his knees stopped him playing for over two and half years. During this time Raphe put his Football on hold and was intending to study TV & Film in years 12/13 at the UTC and then, to hopefully do a degree at Salford University in Film Production. But out of the blue' we were contacted by John Keegan of Everton FC, who is heading up the new Everton Football College, which has been set up to give football players a second chance and at the same time to receive an education, which can lead to University or a scholarship in the USA. Luckily, since Raphe's knee condition improved, he was spotted playing by a top Coach, who passed on his recommendations to John Keegan and here we are today. The UTC has been a life changing experience for my son and I can't thank you enough for what you have done for Raphe. He has also made some very good friends who have also made his time at the UTC a very happy one. I just can't praise the UTC highly enough and I am very grateful
Radu Miclaus Managing Director of the British and Irish Handball League contacted UTCMediaCityUK. He wanted to ask if our students would like to film and live-stream their tournament at Power League Trafford Sports dome in Manchester on 2 nd and 3 rd June. A selection of Year 12 and 13 TV & Film students accepted the challenge and spent their weekend filming and live streaming England and Ireland Handball League. Their work was streamed on the front page of the BBC sports homepage. Radu said The event went very well, the filming crew, led by Alex Kelly performed brilliantly and without any issues. Their professionalism was outstanding and we had perfect live streaming on BBC. I would like to say a huge thank you to Alex and all students involved, if we will have future events in the area we will definitely get in touch. Furthermore we will strongly recommending UTCMediaCityUK to anyone who might need their services.
Ziferblat Live project brief On Friday 8 th June, Ben Davies from Ziferblat (Head of Marketing) came in to UTCMediaCityUK to see the students promotional videos that they created as part of a live project brief. Ben said I am blown away by the talent of the students work. I am going to struggle to pick a winner, they are all amazing videos. The students are so creative, their technical ability is outstanding. Each group of students presented their video to promote 25% student discount at Ziferblat UK, the winning groups work will be used by the company as part of their marketing campaign. Well done year 12 TV and Film students

We had our Year 13 Leavers Assembly on Friday 8 th June to say goodbye and good luck to our students. Chelsea Hunter Head of Year 13 said It has been an absolute pleasure working with you all, you have been a big part of my life for the past two years and I will miss you all There were tears and laughter all across the studio as staff and students were presented with a selection of awards. The students had made a short funny film that showcased their journey throughout their time at UTCMediaCityUK. Good bye and good luck Year 13!
