2 Curriculum vitae Tony L. Palama was born on 5 th August 1982 in Saint-Denis, La Réunion, France. In 2000, after passing the general secondary school examination, he joined the University of La Réunion to start a B.Sc. in Biology. In 2003, he decided to leave La Réunion and joined the University of Montpellier, France; from where he obtained his B.Sc. in Cell Biology and Physiology. In 2004, Tony came back to La Reunion to perform a 3-month training period during which he studied the genetics of sugarcane resistance to the brown rust at the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development CIRAD. This was the beginning of his great interest in plant biology. From 2004 to 2006, Tony performed a M.Sc. in Plant Biotechnology at the University of Montpellier. Fascinated by tropical plants, he joined the CIRAD of Montpellier to study the genetic transmission of methylation polymorphism of banana plantain. Then, he got the opportunity to come back to La Réunion where he joined the IRD group to study the differential gene expression between two Coffea arabica varieties, Bourbon and Bourbon pointu. In September 2006, he got a scholarship from the Regional Council of La Réunion to start his PhD on a new research project which is described in this thesis: the NMR-based metabolomic characterization of Vanilla planifolia. To achieve this project, Tony was cosupervised by Hippolyte Kodja and Robert Verpoorte and conducted his experiments in their respective research group: the unit of Peuplements Végétaux et Bioagresseurs en Milieu Tropical of La Réunion University and the Pharmacognosy department of Leiden University. Tony is now well experienced in NMR spectroscopy and metabolomics, and plans to explore the metabolome of endemic plants of La Reunion. 155

4 Acknowledgements I acknowledge my co-supervisors Prof. Dr. Hippolyte Kodja and Prof. Dr. Robert Verpoorte who gave me the opportunity to do this PhD in University of La Réunion and in Leiden University. I hope that other projects will follow this work on Vanilla planifolia. I would like specially to thank Rob for increasing my interest on natural products. I would like to thank Dr. Young Hae Choi for all his supervision and help throughout the whole time of my PhD. He is a great manager of the Fcog group and I learned a lot about metabolomics and NMR spectroscopy with him. I am also grateful to Dr. Isabelle Fock who followed my work in and from La Réunion and gave me useful comments and advices for my PhD. Although we were only two to work on vanilla in Fcog, I really appreciated its atmosphere. We were many nationalities and I really felt like home. Thinking of it now, it s a place where I got more friends than just colleagues. I hope we will keep in touch throughout the years and may be continue to work together! I will start to thank Alfi, Ibrahim and Federica who were patient and teached me also a lot about metabolomics. But I have learned also from others: Kim, Anneke, Maria, NingQing, Daniel, Claire, Andrea (it), Justin, Andrea (sa), Annelies (special thanks for the samenvatting!), Marianne, Frank, Arno, Teus, Ria, Nancy, Dela, Fara, Zuwairi, Arti, Sara, Barbora, Oscar, Hien, the world best cricket team (Jahangir, Kashif, Tayyab, Iqbal, Nadeem, Yahya and Saifullah), Alvaro, Roman, Monica, Angela, Maria, José-Luis, Pilar, Nayra, Marcos, Isvett, Sonia, Monica, Chiara, Maria Luz, Paul, Lili, QiFang, Yuntao, Nuning, Karima, Meriem; Kees, Fons and Johan from the NMR department, all other Fcog people and Leiden friends, I express my gratitude to you for your support, cooperation and friendship. I am grateful to all my colleagues from UMR PVBMT and CIRAD for their help and cooperation. Michel G., Séverine B., Pascale B., Fred C., Michel N., Katia J., Jean-Bernard D., Denis D., Carole C., Patrice M., Leïla B., Hélène D., Florent M., Julien E., Azali H., Dominique S., Christine J., Magali C., Micheline B., Océane D. and the others, thank you so much. 157
5 I would like to express gratitude to my colleagues from the LCSNSA for their help and collaboration: Jacqueline S., Bertrand P., Isabelle G., Anne B., Emmanuelle G.-V., Arnaud M. and Jean V.; and also Marie-Paule G. and Joel C. from the LBGM for the ever interesting discussions that we had. I thank my colleagues PhD students from La Réunion and particularly those from our association ADDR for all the great moments that we have passed together. I am especially grateful to Nicolas S. for the pictures of vanilla that he took for me. I acknowledge the Coopérative Provanille, UR2 and particularly Bertrand Côme, Didier Sor and François Mayer for telling me the storing of vanilla and for providing vanilla samples for analysis. I would like also to thank my friend Pierre Grosset who helped me once for the collection of vanilla leaves (even if it was really early in the morning!). This PhD work has been financially possible for me thanks to the Regional Council of La Réunion and the European Social Fund. I would like also to thank the University of La Réunion, the UMR PVBMT lab, the DRI and specially the SBE department who help me to finish this PhD through an ATER support. Last but not the least, I would like to thank my parents and family for the support that they gave me all this PhD long. And for sure, I will not forget to thank my fiancée, Evelyne, who encouraged me all along my PhD research even if I was far from home for a long time. Merci beaucoup Chériedouce! 158
