The Man Booker Prize B1 B2 Module 1 1
Summary Here s What We Will Be Learning: Vocabulary. Introduction to the Man Booker prize. Judging process of the prize. Roleplay. Point of Contention. Related Awards. Exercise. January 17 Albert-Learning 2
VOCABULARY Contender: Someone who competes with other people to try to win something. Inception: The establishment or starting point of an institution or activity. Shortlist: A list of preferable items or candidates that have been selected for final consideration, as in making an award or filling a position. Rancour: Bitterness or resentfulness, especially when long standing. Execrable: Extremely bad or unpleasant. 3
Bawdy: Humorously indecent talk or writing. Contention: Heated disagreement. Raison d etre: The most important reason or purpose for someone or something's existence. Facetiously: Treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humour. 4
Introduction The Man Booker Prize for Fiction (formerly known as the Booker-McConnell Prize and commonly known simply as the Booker Prize) is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel, written in the English language and published in the UK. Dramatically enhanced publicity for new fiction will always be a raison d etre for this prize as the winner of the Man Booker Prize is generally assured of international renown and success. From its inception, only Commonwealth, Irish, and Zimbabwean citizens were eligible to receive the prize; in 2014, however, this eligibility was widened to any English-language novel. 5
Judging The selection process for the winner of the prize commences with the formation of an advisory committee, which includes a writer, two publishers, a literary agent, a bookseller, a librarian, and a chairperson appointed by the Booker Prize Foundation. The advisory committee then selects the judging panel, the membership of which changes each year, although on rare occasions a judge may be selected a second time. Judges are selected from amongst leading literary critics, writers, academics and leading public figures. The winner is usually announced at a ceremony in London's Guildhall, usually in early October. 6
Do you know: 2015 s winning novel, A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James, has sold over 315,000 copies to date in the UK and Commonwealth and is available in 20 languages. In an exclusive, today the 2016 shortlisted authors for the Man Booker prize for Fiction have been announced. They are Paul Beatty, Deborah Levy, Graeme Macrae Burnet, Ottessa Moshfegh, David Szalay and Madeleine Thien. MAN BOOKER PRIZE 7
Have you heard? The shortlist for the Booker prize is released. This year there are some strong contenders. My personal favourites are The Sellout by Paul Beatty and His Bloody Project by Graeme Macrae Burnet. Have you read them? No, I haven t read those. I have read Do Not Say We Have Nothing. It s by Madeleine Thien. She might probably win. 8
Do you know: Several writers pass on the opportunity to join the prestigious judging panel because of the immense workload of reading all the submitted entries, which,in 2016, numbered 155. It must be exhausting for the judges to read, maybe a book a day. Well, the judges change their mind continuously at the last minute. Some will not speak to each other because they went to judge the Booker together and could not agree. Such snobbery and rancour are par for the course when it comes to the Booker. 9
Do you know: Even though the Man Booker prize has the power to propel unknown authors to best-selling notoriety, it continues to be mired by it s fair share of hot debates and discussions akin to bawdy brawls. Whoever wins will walk away with 50,000 and publicity, positive as well as negative. I agree. Though it s the world's richest literary prizes, it comes with its fair share of debates. 10
Point of Contention Here are some of the most talked about moments in Booker history : 1) An Execrable Book: Hours after Arundhati Roy won the prize in 1997 for The God of Small Things, author Carmen Callil the chair of the previous year s committee criticized the book on the BBC as execrable, saying it never should have even made the shortlist. Bernard MacLaverty s Grace Notes, widely considered the favorite, was decided against by the judges for being three short stories strung together. 2) Elitist: John Banville s first brush with controversy surrounding the prize came in 1981, after he was snubbed for the shortlist. Banville published a letter in The Guardian criticizing the elitist preferences of the Booker judges. He facetiously asked the committee for the prize money in order to buy every copy of the nominated books and give them to libraries, thus ensuring that the books not only are bought but also read surely a unique occurrence. 11
Related Awards A separate prize for which any living writer in the world may qualify, the Man Booker International Prize was inaugurated in Until 2015, it was given every two years to a living author of any nationality for a body of work published in English or generally available in English translation. In 2016, the award was significantly reconfigured, and is now given annually to a single book in English translation, with a 50,000 prize for the winning title, shared equally between author and translator. A Russian version of the Booker Prize was created in 1992 called the Booker-Open Russia Literary Prize, also known as the Russian Booker Prize. In 2007, Man Group plc established the Man Asian Literary Prize, an annual literary award given to the best novel by an Asian writer, either written in English or translated into English, and published in the previous calendar year. 12
Exercise Answer the following Questions :- 1) What was The Man Booker Prize formerly called? 2) What is the prize money for the Man Booker Prize? 3) Give the names of any 2 authors shortlisted for the year ) Why is the Man Booker Prize considered to be an important prize in the literary circles? 5) Give an example of when the prize was a point of contention. 13
