Callaghan Track-by-Track Behind the Album Title: A History of Now The title for my 2nd studio album A History of Now took a while to come up with. I wanted a name that really encompassed the feel of the whole record. Using the same process as I did for my first album Life in Full Colour, I typed out all of the lyrics for each song, printed them out and taped them to the wall. It helped to get an overall sense of what each song was about, and the links and themes running through them. A lot of the songs are about moments, emotions and stories we might all encounter in life, like the joy and hope of a child in Noah s Song or the reminiscence of a first love in When You Loved Me Around that time I had been having some interesting conversations with family about ancestors and their stories. We discovered that a distant Uncle John left the UK in the 1870s and via Canada moved down to Ann Arbor MI. Via the magic of the internet I ve now reconnected with cousins who still live in that area and one who even lives very close to me in Nashville, which is quite incredible! On my husband s side of the family we went to a reunion in Kentucky of a big family. Great Uncle Buck who had been stationed in southern England during World War 2 married a local girl Great Aunt Delsie and she had moved back to the USA with him. Now aged 90 he has 8 children, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren all because of a meeting brought about by the war. I recently also returned to the UK to celebrate my Grandma s 90th and she shared a lot of stories about her life growing up in the 1920s and over the decades since. 1

What occurred to me throughout these conversations was that it wasn t just the big world events which they were part of that drew me in. The happenings, moments and decisions which seemed routine to older family members are now fascinating to me. They make me think of who I am, where I m from, and wonder what I might have done in the same situation. They also make me think about how quickly the world changes around us. So the thought behind the title A History of Now is that we are all, right now, writing a story which will one day fascinate someone. The way we live, the decisions we make, and the moments of hope, grief and happiness which punctuate all our lives will one day make someone stop, think and wonder. All of us are writing our own History of Now. Tracks: 1. Crazy Beautiful Life This uptempo, happy song is about the sheer exuberance and variety of life. I wanted to capture that feeling of awe and wonder you sometimes get when you take a moment to stop and look at the world around you, and everything that s happened in your own life. There are times when you pause for breath and all you can think is Wow, how did I end up here! 2. Who Would I Be "Who Would I Be" is written about things in life that influence, inspire and make you who you are as a person. The idea behind this song for me was about all the people in my life who have got me to where I am as a person and an artist. From my parents driving me to music lessons every week for years, to learning piano from Elton John s songbooks, to Shawn Mullins giving me my start in America, to all the fans who buy my CDs and come to my shows. There can be so many influences and people who make a big impact as you go through life. This was my tribute to everyone and everything that has enabled me to be who I am. 3. Noah s Song This song was written for my nephew who lives in the UK, who is nearly 4 years old, and my hopes for his future, but it goes out to all children and encourages them to aim high and dream big - something we all need reminding of sometimes. Although it s one of my most personal songs on the album I always love hearing from fans about what the song means to them and who their Noah is. It s what makes songwriting so interesting to me - everyone connects with a song in a very personal way. This recording is extra special as it features the guest vocals of one of my youngest fans - a 9 year old girl whose grand-father donated to my Pledge Music album campaign to have her come to the studio and record backing vocals with me. 2

4. I ll Take You Away The idea for this song came during a writing session with Dennis Matkosky - the producer of the album. Playing around on the keyboard, Dennis started experimenting with a sound which was very similar to an electric guitar but had a floaty, haunting feeling to it. It reminded me of being transported to a state of complete calm, where all of your problems are being melted away, and you almost become hypnotised by the music. The melody and words came quite quickly once we both agreed on the feeling and sentiment that we wanted to write. Some songs are like that. The energy and feel of the music can be so strong that the words and melody feel almost inevitable. 5. Best Year I wrote Best Year in 2010, a couple of months after moving to the US. The lyrics share a personal story about the feeling of taking the leap of faith to tear up the rule book... move a thousand miles from home. The most inspiring thing for me as a singer-songwriter performing this song though is how many people s stories it connects with. Everyone at some point in their life makes momentous decisions and ventures into the unknown. For me that sense of adventure is what keeps life exciting - you never know where life might take you or what you can achieve until you jump in with both feet. Best Year was originally recorded on my first album and I decided to re-record an updated version for this new album because the song has become such an anthem for me of determination, of hope, of joy, and of belief that anything is possible. It s been with me on this journey for 4 years and I wanted to keep it by my side. 6. Lost I got the idea for Lost when reading an from a fan of mine who was going through a difficult time in her life. She had just lost her partner and was ing to tell me how much a song on my first album called Get me through tonight had resonated with her. It was such a moving story and really opened my eyes to how, like lots of people, I sometimes take things for granted and assume that the people I love will always be around. I tried to imagine what it would be like if that wasn t the case, and Lost was the result. It s definitely one of the most emotional songs I ve ever written, and the recording process in the studio was tough, often with me left with tears streaming after a take. I ve always enjoyed performing this song at shows with just piano and vocal, but recording a version with the full band in the studio was amazing, and getting to add a string section to the song really took it to a whole new level. 3

7. Green Eyes The slightly embarrassing story behind this song always goes down well with audiences at my live shows. It was originally called Blue Eyes and was a song I wrote for my husband as a 1 year wedding anniversary gift. It was only when I performed the song for him for the first time that he pointed out he actually had Green Eyes. Funny but true! We re still married 4 years later, and he loves that I tell the story at live shows. 8. Free To Be The idea for this song started on the piano which is unusual for me as I usually write all uptempo songs on the guitar. I had the verse melody and rhythm going round in my head for several days and once I sat down at the piano it came together quite quickly - that s always a joyous moment as a songwriter! I sent the idea to my producer Dennis Matkosky and we finished the song together. The lyrics are really uplifting and hopeful about making life whatever you want it to be. Sometimes you feel empowered by a wave of optimism - when that comes ride it and make it last! 9. When You Loved Me This song was inspired by a wonderful friend of mine who is sadly no longer around. She was the grand-mother of a family I stayed with for a while when I first moved to Atlanta. She was in her 80 s when I met her, and had grown up in New York City. We were talking over dinner one evening about past relationships and she told me about the first man she ever fell in love with. Although the romance didn t last, she often thought about him during the decades that passed and always held onto to that feeling, wondering how things might have been if life had taken a slightly different direction or they had stayed together. I think everyone can relate to that feeling of falling in love for the first time and no matter where life takes you or how old you are, it s something you never forget. Now that we can all too easily look our exes up on facebook, I wonder if the era of the idealised, romantic memory of a lost first love might be ending! 10. Parachute I wrote this song with my friend Adam Wakeman. Because we don t live in the same country, we often write over with Adam sending ideas on piano, me working melody lines, exchanging messages about the theme and lyrics, then getting together in the UK to finish the song. This is one of my favourite songs we ve written together and is about always having someone there for you in life who you can reply on, no matter what. 4

11. Last Song I wrote Last Song with two fellow songwriters in Nashville; Marc Beeson and Lari White. Three-way co-writes are always interesting to me because sometimes so much chat and discussion can occur that it often feels more like therapy with friends than a writing session! This song came about after a long discussion about relationships, and how there are some people you feel are going to be around forever and some who come in and out of your life. With the pace of life these days it can be easy to get distracted and take people you love for granted. This song talks about not letting moments slip by and living each day like it s your last. If you knew it was your last day what would you say to the people you love? Don t wait - tell them now! 12. We Don t Have To Change The World The song was co-written with my producer, Dennis Matkosky, in Nashville. We have written quite a few songs together for the album, and each one has come about slightly differently. For this song, I arrived at Dennis s house to hear an idea he d been working on - it was only a few chords recorded on electric guitar and a really simple drum loop. But the minute I heard it I was transported somewhere sunny and peaceful in my mind, and new that it was going to end up being one of the happiest songs on the album. This song is full of joy about forgetting the pressures and distractions of modern life and living in the moment. Not being worried about where you are, where you ve been or where you re going, but just enjoying the sunshine on your face right then, the world around you, and the company of the people you re with. Moments that offer that opportunity can be rare, so we have to enjoy them when they come. This recording features guest backing vocals by one of my fans who was part of my Pledge Music campaign to make the album. 5
