2 Message from Mitch Hello Everyone! So far it has been a very good summer, not to hot and not to cold. I hope you all get out and enjoy the weather and the many activities on this month s calendar. Please be sure welcome our newcomers to our community, Billie Sue Young, June Young (no relation), Joe Gurley and Juanita Brown. Just think, the Holiday season activities will be upon us soon so get ready for that but in the meantime lets enjoy the rest of summer and the fall seasons. I hope and pray you all will be safe. Be good and I will see you in the halls! ~Mitch Health Note from Paula August is Eye Exam Awareness Month Adults 65 and older should have their vision checked every 1-2 years. Some individuals may have a family history of eye disease or a chronic illness that can affect your vision. This puts you at a greater risk of vision problems, and therefore it is vital that you get your eyes checked more often than most. Seniors are prone to blurred vision, eye irritation and more. Symptoms like this occur because the muscles in the eye become weaker. Consult your doctor if you experience: blurred vision with glasses, extremely sensitive to light, consistent eye pain, red eyes, burning sensation, constant watering and/or black spots in sight. Although seniors are more prone to eye issues, there are ways they can protect themselves and prevent long-term issues. When washing your face, use a clean towel and water to wipe the lid are to prevent infection. Do not use others eye medication or glasses. NO Smoking!! Be sure to get a healthy amount of rest. Consume Vitamin A and proteins (nuts are perfect!) Do not use sprays (i.e. hairspray) close to the eyes. When watching TV, on the computer and/or reading, be sure to have good lighting, take short breaks to rest the eyes and make sure the print is large and clear. Do not read in a moving vehicle or bed and use UV protected sunglasses. 2

3 Resident Spotlight: Margaret Brookshire Margaret Thomason was born August 17, 1924 in Glasgow, Scotland. When Margaret was just a few days old she was adopted by Mr. William and Mrs. Margaret Thomason. She was named after her mother, Margaret, and also became the little sister to William Thomason Jr. who was 20 years older than her. As a child, Margaret, didn t play outside much and didn t get to spend a lot of time with William Jr. but she loved to play with her dolls and tea sets. Her favorite memories as a child where when she, her parents and William would take family vacations to the Turner River in South Scotland. Margaret also loved to knit. Knitting was her favorite hobby for many years. Margaret attended high school in Glasgow at the Garnet Hill Convent, an all-girls Catholic school. Margaret was a devoted student and was very focused on her studies during this time. After high school Margaret began working in a local grocery store. During this time Margaret began collecting elephants and has several rare pieces. When Margaret was in her early 20 s she was introduced to Guy Brookshire, by her best friend while on a stroll one afternoon. Margaret says she was immediately smitten with Guy, an American Marine, because he was so much different from her. She says he talked different, thought different and had a really nice smile. All of these qualities made a big impression on Margaret. Guy began courting Margaret and it wasn t long before they married and within three years they moved to the United States. Margaret and Guy have three boys together, Bill, John and Frank as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Guy passed away about six years ago. Margaret moved to Culpepper Place of Fayetteville in 2012 and loves to attend fitness class as well as all of our great music performances. 3
