From the men and women of New York s finest to some very famous WWII Veterans. Read on to learn more. Contents Memorial 3. Wait for me Daddy Statue 4.Guest Story/Volunteer Story 5. 2 9-11 Memorial Ceremony September 11 th 2014 Honour House was proud to join Hundreds of Members of the Emergency Services and Municipal, Provincial and State Officials from B.C. and Washington State at this years 9-11 Memorial Ceremony at Peace Arch Park, in Surrey. Two separate motorcycle rides set out for the border from the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC and from the Swinomish Casino in the US. Fire Fighters and Police Officers from the Fire Department of New York New Westminster Fire & Rescue & the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Honour Guard escort dignitaries to the Peace Arch. Left to right, from NYPD, Kathy Brown & Sgt. Marna Rann, The FDNY s Steven Goldstein, NY and NJ Port Authority s Officer Craig Wagner & the FDNY s Antonio Amor. and New York Police Department flew in to attend the ceremony where the FDNY s Steven Goldstein gave a particularly moving speech to the crowd. Honour House Director, Howard Blank, was Master of Ceremonies and he was joined under the Peace Arch by US Consul General, Luis Arreaga, Mayors from both sides of the border, New Westminster Fire Chief Tim Armstrong and many other uniformed members of the 9-11 Memorial Committee. Buglers from the US and Canada played Taps and the Last Post in unison and Bellingham Pipes and Drums played Amazing Grace to a visibly moved audience. Oh Canada was sung by Vancouver Fire Department s Andy Greenwood and The Star Spangled Banner was performed by Kelowna teenager Rachel Layne. Following the ceremony dignitaries and guests enjoyed a barbeque on the Canadian side of the park. All proceeds from the event were, very kindly, donated to Honour House.
3 Wait for me Daddy Statue October 4 th 2014 October 4 th 2014 was a big day for the City of New Westminster as the much anticipated Wait for me Daddy Statue was finally unveiled on almost the exact spot that the famous WWII photograph was taken. Honour House played its part as we hosted a number of events on the run up to the big day. We were honoured to be visited by two Veteran Rifleman from the BC Regiment, Henry Kriwokon and Charles Bernhardt, along with Warren Whitey Bernard. Our historical figures pose with the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, and Mayor Wayne Wright. Left to right, Honour House President Al De Genova, Rifleman Henry Kriwokon, Warren Whitey Bernard and Rifleman Charles Bernhardt All three men appeared in the famous Photograph, taken in 1940, and they were reunited, once again, 74 years later to take part in the ceremony. It was an emotional meeting and all three men remember the day, that the picture was taken, very clearly. Whitey chatted with Honour House staff and volunteers over coffee just before the ceremony and he shared some of the stories about his father s experiences as he fought his way, in his tank, across the D Day beaches and on towards Germany. Charles and Henry were only too happy to share some of the lighter moments of their war time experiences but it was part of Charles s heartfelt speech to the crowd, during the ceremony, that reminded everyone of the more somber reason that they and so many other men left their families behind to go and fight on the battlefields of Europe. We did what we did so that you could have your freedom today he said.
4 Guest Story October 15 th 2014 It was a near fatal motorcycle accident that brought Canadian Forces, Master Warrant Officer, James Sutton and his family to Honour House this Fall. James was delivering a fresh salmon, to a friend, that he d just caught on the Fraser River earlier that day, when the driver of an SUV pulled a U turn right in front of him. James hit the vehicle head on and was thrown over the top of it. His injuries were severe and once Paramedics and Firefighters had stabilized him at the scene he was rushed to hospital. They say a brush with death gives you a new perspective on life says James That s definitely true in my case. I m looking forward to getting back on a bike again in the future. The sense of freedom that I get from riding my bike is something that I love and that s isn t going to change. Dylan, attending Fire Fighter Training in Texas and back here in New Westminster. Volunteer Story Nov 8 th 2014 Lifelong New Westminster resident Dylan Myers began volunteering at Honour House just over a year ago and he s become indispensable and highly regarded ever since. At 24, Dylan currently works for the City of New Westminster and his ambition is to become a full time firefighter. My family has lived in New Westminster for over one hundred years and I love working right here in my own community. I always feel that I can do more and becoming a firefighter would be a way that I could give back directly to the city that s helped to raise me says Dylan.
5 The Stanley Cup August 21 st 2014 Local resident, NHL veteran and LA Kings trainer Bill Ranford brought the Stanley Cup to Glenbrook Fire Hall in New Westminster earlier this year. The public were invited to have their pictures taken with the cup for a small donation and proceeds would be donated to Honour House and New Westminster Firefighter s Charitable Society. The line up for photos stretched out of the fire hall and down the street but everyone got their chance to stand next to the world famous trophy. A big thank you to Mr. Ranford and New Westminster's fantastic Fire Fighters. From serving Local Emergency Services & Military members to Veterans & Honour House Families. All came together to help produce our new site. Volunteers, Chief Tim Armstrong, Members of New Westminster Fire & Rescue and Bill Ranford pose with the cup. The New Honour House Website So many people took part in the creation of our new website by donating their time and effort and we d like to thank everyone that was involved in the project. If you haven't already, please take a minute to check it out. We hope that you'll like the new look and more importantly, that you'll find it helpful and informative when you or someone you know, needs to stay with us.
