1 SALZBURG CLEVELAND CLINIC SEMINAR DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING October 2 October 8, fellows from 22 different countries and regions 14 faculty members from the United States, Austria, and Switzerland 26 lectures and 5 workshops given by faculty 28 interesting cases presented by fellows cases selected by faculty to be published in the Online Case Library The beginning of October brought 32 fellows from a string of countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovin, Georgia, and Mexico, among others. Course Director Dr. David W. Trost from Weill Cornell Medicine and Co-Course Director Dr. Franz Kainberger from the Medical University of Vienna led this week s seminar pertaining to Diagnostic Imaging. The twelve faculty members behind the directors included colleagues from Baden Hospital in Switzerland, Weill Cornell Medicine, the Medical University of Vienna, the Medical University of Graz, and our very own University of Salzburg. The faculty prepared lectures covering many relevant topics within their field and led informative and interactive workshops. The faculty also had the opportunity to present their own case presentations every morning. Throughout the week the fellows had the chance to listen to 26 lectures, beginning on Monday with Urgent Findings on the Portable Chest Radiograph by Dr. Ashwin Asrani from Weill Cornell Medicine, Polytrauma Imaging and Commonly Missed Fractures by Dr. Christian Krestan from the Medical University of Vienna, and Imaging of Pediatric Emergencies by Dr. Erich Sorantin from the Medical University of Graz. On Tuesday and Thursday participants took part in Ultrasound Workshops, led by Dr. Kainberger and Dr. Krestan. Thursday s lectures were devoted to plenty of the central nervous system. The fellows spent much of their time in the seminar hall, both on Tuesday and Thursday, listening intently up until dinner. They had obviously deserved an afternoon off, so on Wednesday, one of the faculty members spent his time on the Sound of Music tour while the rest split up to cover the city. Fellows also had the chance to explore the city. The weather hadn t been the greatest all week and the temperature was a bit low, but thankfully the rain cleared up just enough on Wednesday for the fellows to enjoy their afternoon off. While some took to the city, others took the bus out to Europark for some shopping! The faculty and fellows made Schloss Arenberg their home for the week by dining with one another and engaging in stimulating conversation not only about diagnostic imaging, but also about their home countries and personal lives. It was easy to see that the participants became friends during the week. On Friday evening, the participants and faculty celebrated their accomplishments of the week at the farewell dinner, including the X cases selected for the Online Case Library as well as the improvements from Monday s pre-test. The fellows tested well to begin with but improved by % throughout the week, the average jumping almost 25%. The fellows were certainly excited to return home and employ the knowledge they had gained and the connections they had made for the betterment of health care in their own countries.

3 SEMINAR DIARY FROM FELLOW Diary of Hamim Rusheke, MD College of Health Sciences, University of Dodoma, Dodoma, Tanzania 03 October, Monday. I arrived in Salzburg at around 11am. It was my first visit to Salzburg and I found the town very beautiful and calm. It was a sunny day, despite of the little rain we encountered on the way from Munich airport. I found Schloss Arenberg very beautiful and was warmly welcomed at the reception desk. After taking my room and packing my luggage, and off course after showering, I quickly hurried down the stairs. It was almost lunch time. I went directly to the restaurant and had lunch together with colleagues from other countries. Here I had an opportunity of getting to know some fellows whom we shared the same table during lunch. After lunch I was ready for the afternoon lectures, and this time it was the first session of fellow case presentations, under the supervision of Dr David Trost and other members of the faculty. It was a wonderful experience to listen to the different interesting cases from other countries. This session went smooth and it was complete by 5pm. Thereafter we had a brief presentation from OMI/AAF local organizing committee by Elizabeth Bourg. It was already getting late evening and we departed to our rooms. Shortly after that it was dinner time and we mate in the restaurant in the first floor. This was another opportunity for me to get to know more fellows through talking and sharing our experiences from our countries. It made me feel comfortable and happy to speak with colleagues from other countries. After more than 1 hour of eating and talking I went to my room, had about one hour of passing through lecture notes of the day before going to bed as I was already exhausted by the journey. I had my first night at Schloss Arenberg. It was a quiet night and I had nice and calm sleep. 4 October, Tuesday. Woke up at 5:30am with my body completely free from any hangover. Then I had my first breakfast at Schloss Arenberg. After breakfast the seminar started. We had a very impressive presentation by Dr. John Tsiouris on Imaging Differentiation of Stroke Subtypes. To me, the interesting part of this lecture was on the application of MR and CT perfusions on imaging of brain infarctions. This was followed by Imaging evaluation of Acute Abdominal pain by Dr Lily Belly before we went for Coffee Break. After break we were all back in the hall and ready to take on the next presentation on imaging of pelvic trauma by Prof Suzanne Anderson. The topic was really exciting and the interactive way of teaching by the presenter made it well understood. The next topic was on Imaging of spinal fractures by Prof Claudia Weidekamm. It was also interesting and well presented. We had a 3 rd presentation by the same presenter on patient safety and professionalism (The Athlete as a patient) before we went for lunch break. We had a nice lunch and as usual, this was a very special time for me to interact with colleagues and exchange ideas on social and professional issues. After lunch we had interesting presentation by Dr. Lily Belfi on CT of GU emergencies followed by the second round of fellow case presentations. The First session of Ultrasound Workshop was next.during this session I learnt some new skills on ultrasound imaging of the Shoulder and Foot, thanks to the kind hatred guidance and supervision from Dr. Franz Kainberger and his team during this workshop. Each participant had time to practice, and to me this was a good opportunity to practice what I was taught during demonstration session.
4 My First Evening tour to Salzburg city center was next and after having dinner, we had evening walk with colleagues toward the city center. We were about 10 of us. We visited different areas, including, restaurants and coffee shops where we had some drinks and snacks. It was really exciting to be out at night in Salzburg with a group of colleagues. At 09:30pm I returned back to Schloss Arenberg with a half of the colleagues while the rest continued to have their nice time. After reaching to Schloss Arenberg I went directly to bed as I was a bit exhausted and tired. 5 October, Wednesday. Woke up early as usual, had breakfast, and was ready for lectures. Wednesday was a half day and so it was a special day for me to have some adventures in Salzburg town. It looked sunny and relatively warm from morning. We also had a group photo with all the fellows and faculty members on this day. We had lectures by Dr. Ashwin Asrani (Biomedical approach to knee trauma and Imaging of thoracic Trauma). We also had lectures on Imaging of Musculoskeletal Infections and other forms of Inflammation by Prof. Suzanne Anderson, Imaging of Shoulder and Elbow Trauma by Dr. Franz Kainberger and finally, Trauma imaging from Coroner s point of view by Dr. Herald Meyer. We then went for lunch. After lunch, I had a little rest in My room for about an hour or so, and then I was ready to accompany other fellows for walk to different parts of Salzburg. We preferred walking to taking a bus because we wanted to know more places in Salzburg within a short time. We visited a lot of places, most of them very interesting and attractive. On our way to the city center, we came across one bridge along river Salzach with thousands of padlocks hanging on the bridge barriers. It was really amazing to see the different locks in different colors. We visited different shops, malls, restaurants, book centers and so forth (unfortunately I can t remember their names). At around 7pm we completed our journey and went back to Schloss Arenberg. I had dinner and went back to my room. On this day I had time to call home and speak to my family through whatsapp call. I was among the few luck fellows to have access to wireless internet services in my room with strong signal to the extent of making a call through whatsapp. After completing my calls, I went to bed. 6 October, Thursday. Of all the days, this was the most interesting day for me during my stay, first because it had lectures on Neuro, Head and Neck imaging, my favorite topics, but most interesting it was the day I presented my case from Tanzania. We had interesting lectures from Dr. John Tsiouris (Traumatic Brain Injury & Non traumatic CNS injuries) and I should say that these were among the most interesting lectures to me as I have special interest for neuroradiology. I loved part of the lecture on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and specifically the application of DTI and DTI Tractography on TBI. We also had interesting Lectures from Dr. Ammar Mallouhi (Imaging of Spinal Cord Emergencies and Imaging of peripheral nerve injury). We had Lectures by Dr. Franz Kainberger (Radiation protection in the Trauma Bay: a Holistic concept) and Dr. Soraya Robinson (Imaging of Facial Bones, Skull base and Dental Trauma). Finally, we had the last session of fellow case presentation during which I also presented my case. I used this opportunity to give a short description about my home country, Tanzania accompanied with some nice photos of attractive areas. After completing fellow case presentation, we had the second session of Utrasound workshop, and this time it was about ultrasound guided biopsy. It was a very useful course and in the end each of the participants had a chance to practice during hands on session. Lastly it was dinner time, and after that I had some minutes of perusing through some lecture notes before I went to bed.
5 7 October, Friday. Last day for our seminars, full of mixed expressions, grief and joy. Time seemed to run so fast, as we were winding up the remaining lectures. Finally, we had the post-seminar test. To me this was my first test as I happened to miss the pre-seminar test due to the reasons which were beyond my control. The test was followed by evaluation & discussion. Then I had my last visit to Salzburg city center to buy some gifts for my kids at home. I was accompanied by other four fellows. Initially we were walking together from shop to shop, but later on we got separated from each other as each of us started to stick on shops with items of his interest. Moving alone through shops, I had a chance of exploring the different items sold, interact with shopkeepers and off course make my own choices on whatever I wanted to buy. On my movements through different shops I met more fellows who were also very happy doing their last shopping. It was really interesting and enjoyable. It started raining later in the evening while I was still moving through shops, but that didn t stop me from doing my shopping. After completing my shopping, I headed back to Schloss Arenberg. We had a Farewell Reception From 18:00, followed by a Graduation DINNER and certificates awards. The Graduation dinner was well prepared. After that we had a farewell speech from Prof. Wolfgang Aulitzky. It was an excellent speech as it was full of lot of wisdom, encouragement and appreciation. Then came time for certificates and prize awards. The excitements were very obvious from everyone on the Hall. It was very sad to see that everything has finally came to an end after just 5 days of being together. This took us around one and half an hour to complete. I remember reaching my room at around 10pm.Time to arrange and pack my belongings and getting ready for the journey. 8 October, Saturday. Goodbye Schloss Arenberg, Goodbye Salzburg. I left at 2:05 AM by shuttle to Munich airport. CONCLUSION: The seminars were very useful to me, and the teaching I got will help improve my practice in Radiology, as well as in the teaching of Radiology for medical students. This is because we just received new imaging equipment at our hospital which includes 3T MRI and 128 slices CT scan and I needed such a training so as to update my knowledge before starting using such modern equipment. Furthermore, the knowledge I got from the seminars will update my teaching skills, and this will make it easy for me during the teaching of radiologist to our medical students as well as to residents. Thanks!
