4 Biographical / Historical note Rose Margaret Gritton Summer was born August 18, 1915, in Kempton, Indiana. She attended Central Baptist Girls School and graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, in 1937 with a major in speech and a minor in French. Rose and her husband Gwyn, whom she married in 1935, moved to Arkadelphia, Arkansas in She began her teaching career at Ouachita School District in 1956 and then had the opportunity to teach at Gurdon and Arkadelphia High Schools in Clark County until she retired in Upon retirement, she became involved in the local community working with the First Methodist Church of Arkadelphia and the Clark County Historical Association. Rose Margaret Gritton Summers died Friday, July 27, 2001, in Twin Rivers Nursing Home in Arkadelphia, Arkansas and her collection was then donated to Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Scope and Contents The Summers s collection consists of rare books, memorabilia, and an assortment of hymnals dating from 1842 to The rarities are an English grammar book from 1891, an Arithmetic book from 1879 and fragile vintage children's books published from We have the opportunity to review old Raleigh and Watkins home economic almanacs to give us advice on cooking and parenting skills. Two scrapbooks with a home economic theme were collated from newspaper clippings, student pictures, and events. A few musical programs from local theatre shows were saved and one of the unique items in the collection is a 1966 autograph signed by John Carriadine. A user copy of the autograph was made, and the original may be accessed by patrons only with the approval of the head of Special Collections.
