1 Elisabeth Cummings: At 81, one of Australia's greatest living painters finds renewed success By Philippa McDonald Updated Sun 31 Jan 2016, 2:27pm PHOTO: Plein-air artist Elisabeth Cummings in her Wedderburn studio in January, (ABC News: Philippa McDonald) At 81, Australian artist Elisabeth Cummings has never been more successful. MAP: Sydney 2000 "I'm not mad about it in lots of ways," she said. "I like anonymity." After years of what Cummings describes as "quietly working away" practicing her art and teaching, the painter and printmaker has had in the past six months had a show in Hong Kong, plus two highly successful exhibitions in Sydney. "In the last 20 years I think I've grown more confident," she told the ABC. Her landscapes and interiors are on show at the Manly Art Gallery alongside Lloyd Rees and Brett Whitely. "A great privilege and an honour," she said. Manly Art Gallery director Michael Hedger said the response to the exhibition had been overwhelming. "Elisabeth Cummings has been a surprise to many people here, people have fallen in love with her works," he said.
2 PHOTO: Elisabeth Cummings' Journey Through The Studio, 2004, held in Melbourne's Arthur Roe Collection. (ABC News: Philippa McDonald ) Masterclass painting Recently, Cummings conducted a masterclass for artists by Sydney Harbour. "I'm really interested in each individual trying to find their own voice, that's what I'm trying to encourage and I like to talk about colour, because colour really fascinates me," she said. Mr Hedger said the workshop was "booked out in two minutes, we had inquiries from people in America who wanted to come". Cummings' most recent exhibitions are evidence of a great love of the Australian landscape and particularly the outback where she often travels with other artists. "Painters do spend a lot of time alone, but it is wonderful to have these trips, there's a great sense of camaraderie and we all work hard in our separate worlds when we're painting," she said. "But to have that sharing time over meals and breakfasts, it's lovely, it's a good change from being alone all the time. They're very pleasant, good times." From the Pilbara to shearers' quarters in the Monaro, to moonlight in Currumbin in Queensland and Wedderburn, south west of Sydney, the critics say Cummings is at the height of her career. "When it's a full moon here the bush is just alive and I try to paint that," she said. "The thing about painting is it engages me, it interests me, it excites me. "So I'm always looking forward to the challenge of the new painting, the next painting. "You think 'I might be able to do something with this one'."
3 PHOTO: Plein-air painter Elisabeth Cummings in the countryside, January (ABC News: Philippa McDonald ) The 'artist's artist' A recent show at Sydney's Kings Street Gallery drew "a tremendous response" from the public, according to director Randi Linnegar. Ms Linnegar told the ABC many of those who visited the show were other artists. "To a certain extent she's considered the artist's artist," she said. The gallery has represented Cummings for 23 years. "I've seen Elisabeth go from strength to strength, she's always been what I've considered to be a brilliant painter," Ms Linnegar said. "She's unquestionably one of Australia's best painters. She's been on the scene for the last 30 to 40 years and hasn't been given the recognition we believe she should be getting." Art critic John McDonald is a huge fan. "Every time I see a new work I'm impressed with the amazing energy and vitality that goes into it," he said. "She has got better with age, which goes against the grain of most Australian artists who historically and traditionally go off with age."
4 PHOTO: Photo of Elisabeth Cummings' Moonlight at Currumbin, (ABC News: Philippa McDonald) The birth of a bush studio Cummings was born in Brisbane and first came to Sydney to study before spending a decade living and working in France and Italy. When she returned to Australia in 1968, she was looking for a place in the bush outside Sydney. Her friends, painters Barbara and Nick Romalis, told her of their land south-west of Sydney at Wedderburn. "They said 'we would love to give 10 acres of bush to artists to build their studios on,' which they did," Cummings explains. "Eventually, slowly it grew, five of us came here, not all at once. "We all built our studios, it has been the most wonderful gift." After losing her studio in bushfires in 1994, she built her own mud brick home. "To have the chance to live and work in this environment has very much enriched my life," she said.
