COMPREHENSIVE PAIN REHABILITATION CENTER OUTPATIENT PROGRAMS
Our comprehensive whole-person rehabilitative services help patients return to an active lifestyle.
THE MAYO CLINIC COMPREHENSIVE PAIN REHABILITATION CENTER The Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Pain Rehabilitation Center was among the first pain rehabilitation programs in the nation, and is now one of the largest programs worldwide. The Pain Rehabilitation Center is located in the Generose Building on the Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. The Pain Rehabilitation Center offers four outpatient (not overnight) rehabilitation programs: Adult Three-Week Program Adult Two-Day Program Pediatric Three-Week Program (ages 13 to young adult) Pediatric Two-Day Program (ages 13 to young adult) mayoclinic.org/painrehab I 1
Pain Rehabilitation Center chronic pain specialists work together as a team to ensure patients get exactly the care they need. Your care team may include: Physicians Occupational therapists Psychologists Clinical nurse specialists RN care coordinators Pharmacists Tobacco treatment specialist Recreational therapists Biofeedback therapists Chaplains Physical therapists 2 I Mayo Clinic
CHRONIC PAIN AND REHABILITATION Pain that lasts longer than 3 months is chronic. It may affect a specific part of the body or involve many areas, including conditions from headaches to fibromyalgia. In these cases, pain becomes an illness itself rather than only a symptom. Chronic pain often decreases overall quality of life, as patients may experience depression, drug-related complications, anxiety, relationship problems, and reduction in activity. At the Pain Rehabilitation Center, we offer group-based treatment and hope for a return to a satisfying life. mayoclinic.org/painrehab I 3
4 I Mayo Clinic Through the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Pain Rehabilitation Center program, Carl White found ways to cope with his pain and the anger that accompanied it. Read more about Carl s remarkable story and others at mayoclinic.org.
MAKING THE DECISION TO PARTICIPATE Pain rehabilitation is a challenging process that requires a serious commitment. As you and your family consider admission to the Pain Rehabilitation Center, please ask yourself these questions: Is my life focused on pain and my inabilities, rather than my capabilities? Are my doctors telling me there is nothing further they can do to relieve the pain? Do they tell me that I need to learn to manage my pain? Is chronic pain affecting my family? Is my recovery from injury or illness taking much longer than expected? Am I unable to commit to social events with family or friends because of unpredictable pain? Am I willing to wean off of narcotic pain medications and learn new ways to manage pain? Am I able to participate in physical tasks and group activities from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for 3 weeks? If you or a loved one answered yes to one or more of these questions, a Pain Rehabilitation Center program may be right for you. The Pain Rehabilitation Center program was life-changing. I had lost total control of my life; my chronic pain was making decisions for me. The staff built an individualized treatment program for me and assisted me in changing my perception of pain. Carl White mayoclinic.org/painrehab I 5
HOW DO THE PROGRAMS WORK? The Pain Rehabilitation Center uses an integrated care approach to help you achieve your goals. The following treatment methods are the core components of our center: Education and Group Sessions Education and group sessions are designed to help patients recognize and manage negative emotions and physical changes, improve relationships, and become more effective at managing pain. Medication Management Long-term use of pain-reducing (analgesic) medicines often provides minimal relief and may worsen pain and cause side effects. Pain Rehabilitation Center staff review each patient s list of medicines and create an individualized plan to reduce and eliminate narcotic paint medication and other concerning medications as well. Medicine Education In chemical health education group sessions, patients learn about the risks and benefits associated with various chronic pain medicines. This information helps patients make better decisions about managing their chronic pain without pain-reducing medications. Stress Management and Relaxation Stress and pain often increase each other, turning common challenges into major roadblocks. Stress management training, including relaxation techniques, provides an overview of coping strategies to break the pain-stress cycle. 6 I Mayo Clinic
Physical Therapy Physical therapy helps patients increase activity, energy and function. Therapists work with patients to move more efficiently and reduce their fear of movement. Instruction is given on proper ways to perform normal activities, such as lifting, bending, walking and sitting. Occupational Therapy Occupational therapy focuses on assisting patients in successfully returning to daily activities such as household chores, work, selfcare, and leisure activities. Occupational therapy helps patients learn new ways to do daily tasks so that they can function independently. Recreational Therapy Recreational therapy focuses on helping patients return to social and leisure activities that have been limited by pain. A variety of modalities are used to improve the patient s quality of life through leisure activities. mayoclinic.org/painrehab I 7
Biofeedback Biofeedback treatment uses computer technology to aid patients in increasing and maintaining control over basic body functions, such as breathing rate and muscle tension. Biofeedback therapists use computer data to show patients the physiological responses that occur with chronic pain and to teach techniques to better manage pain. Sleep Counseling Chronic pain significantly impacts sleep by causing insomnia and discomfort. Sleep counseling teaches techniques that promote better sleep. Improving sleep efficiency leads to more restful nights and active days, and this helps with the management of chronic pain. Lifestyle Management Experts provide instruction on healthy lifestyles, addressing nutrition, sleep and tobacco use. Spiritual (religious and otherwise) and job-related counseling can also be arranged. The Pain Rehabilitation Center team strongly believes that lifestyle decisions and habits are key in managing chronic pain. Supportive Environment Pain Rehabilitation Center programs are offered in a group format, which allows patients to support and encourage their peers. Sharing difficulties and successes reduces the sense of isolation people with chronic pain sometime experience. 8 I Mayo Clinic
WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
