What kind of neck and back pain are your patients experiencing? No pain Mild pain Nagging pain Miserable pain Intense pain Worst pain Radiating or tingling pain is present but does not limit activity Can do most activities but with rest periods Exclusion of some activities because of pain Exclusion of most activities because of pain Unable to do any activities because of pain If the level is 4 or higher, it may be time to recommend minimally invasive spine surgery.
We re helping people get their lives back Expertly focused on spine care Our board-certifi ed surgeons + are given a unique opportunity to focus solely on patients and spine care. They are expertly positioned across the nation and have been recruited for their high level of experience and medical knowledge. Screening patients for surgical success For many patients, our minimally invasive spine procedures are a safer and effective alternative to open neck or back surgery.^ Once you refer a patient to Laser Spine Institute, our screening process begins with an MRI review and consultation, followed by a clinical evaluation of the patient's medical history and a physical examination. Making our care affordable for many Our outpatient setting eliminates hospital-associated costs and helps patients get back to their lives faster. We work with a number of insurance providers to ensure that as many patients as possible can receive our expert medical care. Creating a reciprocal continuum of care We encourage patients to return to their referring physicians after surgery to facilitate a full and speedy recovery. Our staff and surgeons are dedicated to fostering relationships with other medical professionals to enhance the overall patient experience. Laser Spine Institute has a patient satisfaction score of 96.^ +For more information, visit LaserSpineInstitute.com/surgeons. ^For more information, visit LaserSpineInstitute.com/results.
Meet our board-certifi ed surgeons + The surgeons at Laser Spine Institute specialize exclusively in relieving neck and back pain through minimally invasive, outpatient spine surgery. Our surgeons led by Chairman, Department of Surgery, Dr. Michael C. Weiss have helped more than 75,000 patients get the relief they deserve. Michael C. Weiss, D.O., FAOAO Chairman, Department of Surgery, Reginald Davis, M.D., FACS Director of Clinical Research, Neurosurgeon Zoltan Bereczki, D.O. Stefan Prada, M.D. Timothy Luke, M.D. Keith Eugene Girton, M.D. Jeffrey P. Nees, M.D. Neurosurgeon R.J. Meagher, M.D., FACS Neurosurgeon Chris Reeves, D.O. Raj Kakarlapudi, M.D. Robert Blok, D.O. 6 What you should know about our procedures Minimally invasive solutions for chronic neck and back pain When conservative treatments have been exhausted, Laser Spine Institute offers a surgical option with excellent benefits. Our minimally invasive muscle-sparing technique results in a quicker recovery, less surgical blood loss and less risk due to the low level of impact to the body than traditional open back surgery.^ Laser-based versus laser-assisted surgery The word laser is part of our name, but the majority of the procedures our board-certified surgeons + perform are done so with other surgical tools. The most common procedure that the laser is used for is facet thermal ablation. Performed with a less than 1-inch incision, the laser helps relieve pain caused by arthritis in the facet joints. Advantages of Laser Spine Institute s minimally invasive spine surgery: No lengthy recovery^ Outpatient procedure Muscle-sparing technique Less than a 1-inch incision Our procedures offer patients lasting relief, without the complications of traditional open back surgery. Deciding factors Our minimally invasive procedures Other spine surgery providers Hospital stay Outpatient 2 to 5 days Infection rate 0.49% Up to 19% Complication rate 3% 16.4% Costs $ $$$ +For more information, visit LaserSpineInstitute.com/surgeons. ^For more information, visit LaserSpineInstitute.com/results.
Specializing in the following procedures: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) A less invasive alternative to traditional open neck fusion to relieve neck pain, weakness and tingling associated with a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease. During the ACDF procedure, the damaged disc is removed and implants are inserted to help stabilize the spine. Cervical disc replacement A minimally invasive procedure in which an artificial disc replaces an unhealthy vertebral disc. Decompression with Interlaminar Stabilization device This procedure helps relieve pain associated with spinal stenosis. Through a small incision, the surgeon fi rst decompresses the affected areas, eliminating the source of pain. Once the stenosis has been decompressed, the surgeon will insert a device, which will help to stabilize the spine and maintain the decompression without limiting the patient s range of motion. Discectomy Relieves pressure on the portion of a herniated or bulging disc that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Surgeons utilize X-ray monitoring and fi ber-optic devices in order to see what is compressing the nerve and remove it without causing destabilization of the spine. Foraminotomy Relieves pressure on nerves compressed by the intervertebral foramen. Laminotomy Relieves pressure on the spinal cord compressed by spinal stenosis. Lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) This is a minimally invasive spine surgery that accesses the spine through small incisions on the side of the body. This procedure avoids disrupting or stripping soft tissue and muscle that is required for other spine fusion procedures. RegenaDISC Regenerates the spinal disc and promotes long-term spine health by using the patient s own cells through stem cell therapy. Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) This is a less invasive alternative to traditional open back fusion. Its focus is to relieve back pain caused by spondylolisthesis, degenerative disc disease or a herniated disc. During the TLIF procedure, the damaged disc is removed and implants are inserted to help stabilize the spine. Commonly treated conditions Bulging disc Cervical myelomalacia Cervical myelopathy PARS defect Recurrent herniated disc Sciatica Scoliosis Severe degenerative disc disease (DDD) Spinal cord compression Spine fractures Spinal stenosis Spondylolisthesis
Patient success stories Name: Bruce K. Age at time of surgery: 64 Addressing a complex diagnosis without the complications of open back surgery. Bruce suffered from chronic back pain that affected his daily life for 40 years. After exhausting his conservative care options, including physical therapy and prescription pain medication, his physician recommended spine surgery to help him get his life back. Diagnosed conditions: Arthritis without myelopathy Bulging/herniated disc DDD Facet degeneration Foraminal stenosis Osteophyte Radiculitis Spondylolisthesis BEFORE SURGERY After a careful screening process, Bruce was confirmed as a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery at Laser Spine Institute. Our surgeons performed a fusion and laminectomy, facetectomy and discectomy, as well as a caudal epidural steroid injection. There were no complications and Bruce was up and walking just hours after surgery. Four years after his procedure, Bruce reported a 90 percent improvement in his back pain level. AFTER SURGERY He s been able to start golfing again and enjoying his life free from chronic pain. Before After VAS 6 2 ODI 44 24
Providing a more conservative approach to surgery for a young, otherwise healthy patient. Diagnosed conditions: Lumbar annular tear Lumbar bulging/herniated disc Lumbar radiculitis BEFORE SURGERY Name: Casey A. Age at time of surgery: 33 Casey experienced burning and tingling pain for 10 years, struggling to stand for long periods of time and get a full night s sleep. She tried chiropractic manipulation, injections and massage before turning to Laser Spine Institute. Our surgeons determined the right procedure for her an L5/S1 lumbar laminotomy and foraminotomy including partial facetectomy with decompression of the nerve roots and discectomy. Our surgeons also performed a right L5/S1 destruction via thermal ablation of the paravertebral facet joint nerve. The procedure lasted 61 minutes and there were no complications. AFTER SURGERY Two years after surgery, Casey indicated an 85 percent improvement in her pain levels. She made a quick recovery. Less than a month after surgery, she returned to activities that would have been impossible with her former pain levels. Within one to two months of surgery, she returned to work.
