The three main energies HEAVEN QI elements, each with a Yin & Yang component creates 0 Stems Moves in 0 year cycles PERSON QI Yin channels go up Yang channels go down 9 Stars the energy assigned to human who stands between heaven and earth Moves in 9 year cycles QI Branches this is the energy of the channels Moves in year cycles Astrology: Examines the combination of Heaven, Person and Qi to determine the characteristics for each person or specific year. Person Qi Nine star 9 FIRE All directions add up to 9 FIRE 8 WATER 7 6 Every 9 years the numbers inside the box rotate but continue to add up to 8 WATER prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.

Nine star and the movement of the -element cycle For more information also see: Kiiko Matsumoto s Clinical Strategies, Vol., page 6 Wood Fire Summer Water Fire Wood Spring in-between seasons Metal Autumn Metal Water Winter 6 days of year ~7 days per season & ~8 days of transition after each one (through /center) Yin movement is always counterclockwise around the no. (center) and Yang movement is always clockwise. prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.

Nine star map in relation to the abdomen & clinical application According to Han Dynasty we know that LEFT is YANG and RIGHT is YIN Yin always goes up and yang goes down matches flow of meridians Physiological functions of the body such as movement of the large bowel, vena cava and aorta also follow this movement yin (right) goes up and yang (left) goes down. This cannot be reversed -element tension allows for wood to stay below and for metal to float above when naturally, they want to do the opposite. (Imagine the tension you feel when you submerge a water-bottle under water. It wants to push up and float to the top). After death, the -elements stop moving and therefore the Classics of Chinese medicine say that Hun (wood) returns to its natural position as it follows Shen up. At the same time, Po (metal) sinks to its natural position below (toward the Gate of Po which is only open at the time of defecation and death). All Yin channels go up All Yang channels go down 8 9 FIRE WATER 7 6 When you project the 9-star chart over the abdomen, with center box lined up with the umbilicus, the elements correspond with the anatomical structures and reflexes. The ones we are most familiar with include: no. liver reflex area no. 9 heart reflex area no. spleen reflex area no. Tan Tien reflex area no. 6 and no. 7 sigmoid colon and anus, Gate of Po reflex area Of particular interest from the 9-star projection is the location of the three element boxes. The center, or the area surrounding the umbilicus, matches with the Hun Dynasty and Classics of Chinse Medicine description of the location of element. Box number 8 in the 9-star projection overlaps with an area of St6-St7 which we usually associate with the Lung and Immune reflex. prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.

Anatomical structures in element (significant immune/lymphatic involvement) Spleen Appendix - Called spoiled tail. Ileocecal valve - Chinese characters used to name this area represent a gate that only opens one way ( spoiled gate it fails to function properly like a door with a damaged hinge). Cecum - This area is highly susceptible to bacteria, yeast and fungal accumulation. All can easily hide in this area. Peyer s Patches - Also called abdominal tonsils are found in the Cecum distal part of the small intestine, cecum. Jejunum - This area is essential for absorption of nutrients and referred to as root in Chinese medicine - important to check and keep healthy for good prognosis. Clinical presentations: St 6 St 7 area on the right may become tender, often stubborn to release, in patient with: candida overgrowth and other yeast or fungal infections often present in patients with a history of long-term antibiotic use where the healthy gut-flora has been wiped out. ileocecal valve spasms; muscle spasm in general (diabetic patients) appendicitis - acute and chronic cases Appendix Ileocecal valve Jejunum patients with Ren-9/Sp-0 reflex, chronically cold feet, irregular heartbeats and other cardiac problems. All of these are a sign of poor circulation. The vena cava (located on the right side of the body) has to carry as much as 0% of the blood up to the heart (against gravity). Without enough strength to do so, circulation in the body and heart with be affected. patients with IBS, SIBO (small-intestine-bacteria-overgrowth),etc. patients with anxiety, depression and other Shen disturbance due to gut-brain connection. Ileum Ren line below umbilicus & Kidney 6 When describing the Ren line below the umbilicus, the Classics of Chinese Medicine make a distinction stating Tan Tien and Qi Hai Tan Tien. If we consider the 9-star map, Ren 6 area falls into bracket while Ren + Ren belong to Water. Patients with small-intestine patterns may have Ren 6 pressure pain more often than the lower Ren points and treatment approach may vary. Kidney 6 pressure pain generally responds to adrenal treatments (Kidney). However, in cases where this strategy fails, consider that Nan Ching assigns the area around the umbilicus to. Water Treatment strategies for areas in the section of 9-Star map Small intestine pattern: SI is a good first choice - start with left side. For patients in their 60s or older, SI6 may work better. Test these against Ren 6 area. Use Bl6 as a support point. On the back SI will continue this treatment strategy. (Note that SI also releases and works well for Ren area and is an essential autoimmune treatment). Ren pattern: start with Lu7 on the right side and test against Ren 6 pressure pain. DLPFC along with TH- can release ST-6-St7 area and help regulate the brain-gut axis. Sp- + Sp-9 (bilateral) always use for lymphatic treatments. Master Nagano s Immune points; TH6; Ki6 & Du (bilateral or same side) may help release St-6-St-7 Pressure pain in the area of the Jejunum only (ULQ) can be released using Liv- (needle against the channel) + right side St- + right side Liv-. If adrenal treatments fail to release Ki6, use Sp to clear pressure pain around the umbilicus. prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.

Gall-bladder points connected to the limbic system Limbic system can be found on top of the brain stem and below the cortex. Hypothalamus, Amygdala, Thalamus and Hippocampus are the (generally agreed upon) structures of this system. They have a strong connection to emotions Hypothalamus regulates the ANS. Hippocampus converts short term memory to long term memory and can trigger emotions associated with memories. Amygdala aggression center anger, anxiety, fear when stimulated (exact opposite when damaged - impulsion, recklessness). Thalamus relay station see, hear, touch, get directed to specific areas of the brain for interpretation. Any of these senses (as well as the fourth sense, smell, which goes to a different part of the brain) can trigger emotions. Gallbladder 8 (Leading Valley) and Gallbladder 9 (Impact to the Heaven) Location In the depression cun and. cun respectively, above ear apex Indication Using the points in this area has a positive effect on patients who present with sympathetic dominance nervous, hypervigilant or anxious These patients may have a relief in symptomatic presentation but the results don t seem to last. Adding the GB8/GB9 area will help reinforce the treatment. Needling T is the primary tender reflex. If positive, it serves well to help located the correct GB8/GB9 point(s). Other regions that respond well to GB8/GB9 points are pictured in the diagram Palpate and choose the area that works the best to release reflex areas. Needle toward Du0 Trapezius & Erector spinae Heart area: SI, T and edge of left scapula Liver area: Check area of T7 Kidney/Adrenal Check QL muscle Piriformis: GYN muscle 6 prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.

Upper Tan Tien Common symptoms/presentation of upper Tan Tien problems may include symptoms in other areas of the body not just the head. Treating upper Tan Tien can influence the middle and lower Tan Tien. Use Bl + Yu Yao point to treat: A very common pattern which presents with pressure pain on: o Ren 7 o Ren o Ren o Liver bilateral Droopy eyelids (ptosis) which may be present as a result of aging, medical problems (i.e. diabetes) or genetics (common in patients from Asian and Mediterranean regions) o Add Lu0 Small intestine channel neck/shoulder pain is commonly a result of eye strain. Consider in patients that have poor vision and in patients that spend a lot of time in front of the computer screen. May present with symptoms of sciatica Add Ht used to release pain along small intestine channel 7 prepared by Monika Kobylecka, L.Ac.
