1 MSM NPN What is MSM? MSM is a natural sulfur compound and nutritional component contained in various foods. It is part of the staple diet of humans and almost all other vertebrates. As the main source of sulfur, MSM is essential for the correct functioning of natural antioxidant mechanisms in our body. To neutralize free radicals, the body uses a variety of antioxidant enzymes that contain sulfur amino acids. In addition, sulfur is necessary in the formation of what is regarded as the most potent antioxidant among all nutrients, glutathione. Dr. Stanley Jacob and his colleague, Robert Herschler, a chemist from the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon, pioneered the study of MSM. How the components of MSM contribute to its therapeutic effects? MSM is a natural analgesic: it blocks the transfer of pain that travels through nerve fibers. MSM vs. Other similar products The treatment provided by conventional medical drugs, such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids target inflammation which are most often accompanied with undesirable side effects. Studies by Dr. Jacob have shown that by having a minimum concentration of MSM in the body is critical to the normal function and structure of our cells. The adult body needs a concentration of MSM that is greater than that obtained through normal diet. At the University of Oregon Health Sciences, Dr. Jacob has treated over 15,000 patients using MSM. He delivered on average mg to each patient. He also noted that higher doses up to 5000 mg or more per day produce therapeutic effects without side effects. Osteoarthritis is a condition which begins by the softening of cartilage in joints, followed by erosion, and degeneration of joint tissue and tearing of cartilage. Conventional drugs against this painful condition are anti-inflammatory and analgesic, but these drugs produce significant side effects. By adding an extra dose of vitamin C, the symptoms of pain and swelling are reduced and become less sensitive. Dr. Herschler discovered that MSM is able to put a film on the entire gastro- intestinal canal, completely preventing the penetration of allergens thus making them less harmful. Respiratory conditions in which MSM provides satisfactory results include bronchiectasis, allergies (hay fever), asthma and emphysema. MSM can also protect against exposure to insecticides because it neutralizes anti-cholinesterase (toxic chemicals in insecticides and cyanogen). It also promotes the excretion of substances through the urine that are produced in the body by carbohydrates. The results reported on environmental allergies are based on assays of quantities between 50 mg and 1000 mg per day. Fibromyalgia MSM can relieve fibromyalgia in cases of oral, topical, intravenous or subcutaneous injection. It is important to point out to patients that the effect of MSM is slow. MSM will not completely cure fibromyalgia, but can be used to ease the pain. Constipation In clinical studies, Dr. Jacob found that patients with chronic constipation have a sudden and sustained improvement with supplementary administration of 100 to 500 mg of MSM per day.

MSM taken orally is effective against Giardia, Trichimonas and intestinal worms such as Nématoces, Enterobius and others. The researchers believe that MSM is active against parasites by a competition effect at the receptor locations on the mucosal surface. This prevents the organism from attaching to the intestinal wall and allows their removal from the body. Effective doses of MSM against parasites are mg per day, taken for a period of days. In treating disease, a daily dose ranging between 250 and 2000 mg per day is generally used. In severe cases, doses up to 5000 mg can be used safely. Significant results are usually seen after one to twenty-one days for less severe symptoms. 3. For more serious problems, researchers report that higher doses ( mg / day) may be taken during a period of 120 days. It is preferable to distribute the dose evenly throughout the day (for example: for a dose of 1500 mg, 750 mg taken twice daily or 375 mg four times daily, etc.).
