2 Comprehensive Pain Assessment for Clinicians 1-day Intensive Workshop with Dr. David Walton PT, PhD, FCAMPT Elborn College, 1201 Western Rd., London Ontario Saturday October 4 th 8:30am-4:30pm EST What does a 10 really mean on a numeric rating scale? What about an 11 or 12? What exactly is catastrophizing or kinesiophobia? Why and when should they be evaluated? What do the scores mean? How can clinicians identify nociceptive, peripheral neuropathic and central neurogenic pain? What is the use of quantitative sensory testing in the clinic? How can it be done in a time- and cost-effective manner? If you ve ever asked yourself these or other questions about pain assessment, you will benefit from this 1-day workshop. Using real-world examples, reflective observation and active experimentation, you will learn how to choose, apply, and interpret common and not-socommon pain assessment tools to give you a more holistic, comprehensive, biopsychosocial understanding of your patients pain experiences. We will explore the value of a multimodal pain assessment approach for purposes of diagnosis, prognosis, treatment decisions and outcomes. By the end of this workshop participants will: 1. Understand the effect of using different anchors for the pain numeric rating scale and how they change the meaning of the scale 2. Appreciate the additional information gained from quantifying pain frequency, location, and quality, and possess some tools for doing so. 3. Know how to correctly evaluate pressure pain threshold. 4. Know a simple but robust technique for evaluating cold hypersensitivity in the clinic. 5. Know when to administer key cognitive pain scales, including the Pain Catastrophizing Scale, Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia, and Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire, and understand what the scale scores mean for prognosis and treatment decisions. 6. Become familiar with a clinical decision tool for evaluating different aspects of the pain experience, including nociceptive pain, neuropathic pain, and central neurogenic pain. 7. Explore pain-related function and disability scales, understand the relative merits and drawbacks of region-specific vs. generic scales.

3 Who should attend? Clinicians who work with people in pain and would like to improve their skills in pain assessment and clinical reasoning. This includes Physicians, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, and others. About the instructor David Walton PT, PhD holds expertise in clinical and lab-based assessment of pain. He is Assistant Professor with the School of Physical Therapy at Western University in London, Ontario and an Associate Scientist with the Lawson Health Research Institute. He is also Director of the Pain and Quality of Life Integrative Research Lab at Western and co-founder and past Chair of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association s Pain Science Division. Dr. Walton is the 2014 recipient of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association s Mentorship Award, and has won two faculty-wide Teaching Awards of Excellence. He has published over 40 articles in scientific journals, 3 book chapters, and has presented multiple times both nationally and internationally. His research focus is on integrative pain assessment and treatment with a focus on musculoskeletal injuries. He also moonlights as a clinical Physiotherapist in London focusing almost exclusively on complex chronic pain problems, drawing upon 10 years of clinical experience prior to his academic career. How to participate There are two ways to participate in this workshop. The first, providing the greatest opportunity for interaction and hands-on learning, is in-person at Elborn College in London.

The second, for those unable to be physically in London at the time of the event, is through a web-based broadcast that allows real-time viewing of the event and the opportunity to submit questions through a question management system that also allows you to vote on others questions just as they can vote on yours to move the most popular questions to the top of the queue. While not as interactive as the in-person session, this online approach is offered at a discounted registration fee and will allow experience and limited participation for those in other regions.
