1 Original Article / 2551; 18(3): J Thai Rehabil Med 2008; 18(3): ABSTRACT Effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on post-laminectomy or discectomy pain: a preliminary study Chaiprakit N,* Sukonthamarn K,* Suputtitada A,* Tejapongvorachai T,** Niruthisard S.*** *Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, ** Department of Orthopaedics, *** Department of Anaesthesia, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University Objectives: To determine effectiveness of TENS on post laminectomy or discectomy pain and morphine requirement. Study design: Experimental study, randomized patient-blinded control trial Setting: Department of Orthopaedics, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital Subjects: Patients undergoing laminectomy or discectomy less than levels Correspondence to: Naruporn Chaiprakit, M.D. Current address: Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Rama IV Rd, Bangkok jubnaa@gmail.com :..,*..,..,*..,..,*..,..,**..,.. *** *, **, ***,, Methods: Patients were randomly assigned in a single-blind manner into 2 groups: active or placebo TENS. Each patient received TENS or sham TENS for 1 hour, 3 times/day for 8 hours. Pain scores were recorded before stimulation and 8 hours postoperation. Satisfaction score and PCA morphine requirement were recorded at 8 hours post-operation. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in pain score, satisfaction score and amount of PCA morphine between the TENS group (11 patients) and the control group (11 patients). The TENS group had a tendency to receive PCA morphine less than the control group. No serious complications were found in both groups. Conclusion: There was a tendency in decreasing amount of morphine for controlling pain when applying TENS in patients after laminectomy or discectomy. Key words: TENS, pain, laminectomy, discectomy J Thai Rehabil Med 2008; 18(2): : (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, TENS) (morphine) : : : : 2 (active TENS) (sham TENS) TENS 1 3 / : : 2551; 18(3)
