Exhibit descriptin - summary Title f the exhibitin: Epidemic Planet Abstract A better understanding and mre accurate frecasting f the spread f an epidemic and the effects f mitigatin measures is paramunt in establishing an infrmed risk management and cntainment plicy. The Epidemic Planet is the visualizatin applicatin develped in the cntext f the GLEAMviz prject fr the study and mdeling f the glbal spread f infectius disease epidemics, that enables its users t interactively cmpare and learn abut the effects f a number f gegraphic and infectin features, as well as interventin scenaris n a pandemic, simulated using GLEAM, the Glbal Epidemic and Mbility mdel. 2 The Epidemic Planet has been specifically designed fr public display and interactive use directly by the visitrs. This exhibit demnstrates the epidemic mdelling functinality by way f a prttypical pandemic and a select number f interventin scenaris that were mdeled and simulated in the GLEaMviz system. A tuch-screen based interface allws the visitr t select scenaris she wishes t cmpare, while a large screen displays the dynamic visualisatin f the precmputed simulatin results fr the selected scenaris side-by-side, t enable the visual cmparisn. Sample f the side-by-side maps with the animated pandemic spread shwn in the Epidemic Planet exhibit. The current setup includes the fllwing ptins t be chsen by the user n the tuch-screen: the gegraphic rigin fr the disease - La Glria, Mexic, where the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic riginated, r a majr Eurpean city like Barcelna, Spain; the cntagiusness f the disease, mild r severe (which crrespnds t different values f the transmissin f the virus); whether t apply travel restrictins r nt, reducing the travel flws f the glbal airline transprtatin system by a 75% factr; whether t cnsider a wrldwide vaccinatin campaign r nt and, if yes, whether t start it in August r in Nvember. Multi-language ptins can be implemented.

3 The tuch-screen interface f the Epidemic Planet exhibit. The visitrs can use this interface t select the epidemic scenaris t cmpare. What is innvative abut the technlgy/activity that yu will shw? The GLEAM mdel elevates the cmputatinal mdelling f infectius diseases t a whle new level by allwing arbitrary cmpartmental mdels f the infectin dynamics, integrating detailed real-wrld sci-demgraphic and ppulatin mbility data, and cnsidering ther timedependent features such as seasnal effects. It resulted frm a multi-disciplinary cllabratin f epidemilgists, cmputatinal mdellers, cmputer scientists, designers and physicists, applying recent insights in the rle f multi-scale mbility and cntact patterns n the dynamical behaviur f diffusin prcesses, as well as expliting recent advances in distributed highperfrmance infrmatin and cmmunicatin technlgies. The Epidemic Planet represents a simplified and interactive way f access t such a sphisticate mdeling framewrk develped fr scientific research purpses. It is meant t facilitate the rapid adptin f this pwerful scenari evaluatin and training tl by a wide audience. Technical requirements PC Windws 7 Minimally 4 GB memry
