Registration begins on January 11. Call to register. Bring this information for both the student and the parent(s) according to the 2015 Federal Tax Return filing status for each person: * Completed 2015 Federal Tax Return o Bring a copy of the Federal Tax Return and your W-2s with you, regardless of whether you have actually submitted the 2015 Federal Tax Return or not. * Not yet completed 2015 Federal Tax Return Hands on FAFSA Completion Event! o Bring a copy of 2014 Federal Tax Return and 2015 W-2s. * Will not file and are not required to file a 2015 Federal Tax Return o Bring your 2015 W-2s and any other income statements for Seniors: Scholarship deadlines are fast approaching. Please check your deadline and make sure you have all the appropriate information to them to receive the funds! It is not too late to join the scholarship listserv. 3 Page 3 REGISTERING FOR CLASSES Believe it or not, it s already time to start planning for the next school year! Registration information will be arriving at home in late January/early February, and presentations about the registration process will take place in classes the first week in February. The guidance office has a few suggestions to assist students (and parents) with course selection for the next school year: Choose classes carefully. Once the registration window closes on February 11, the classes chosen are the classes the student will take in If a student failed or is currently failing a course, it may be necessary to retake it to graduate. There are several options for retaking a course: register to take it in , enroll in summer school, or apply at one of the district s alternative or online programs. Please make an appointment with your school counselor if you d like more information on these options. This year s juniors will be provided with a credit check during their registration presentations on February 2. This credit check will show the number of credits and classes needed to complete the senior year and graduate in May of All students are required to complete a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) in *Your student has a username and password to access his or her portfolio on this site. It may help your child to review his or her own PLP when registering for next year s classes. *Usernames and passwords for can be obtained from Marcia Geyer, registrar, in the guidance office. Read the Course Listing Book, which is available at This excellent registration resource includes graduation requirements, course prerequisites and descriptions, and school policies relating to registration. Students, choose classes appropriate for YOU. One of the highlights of school is being with friends, but if you register for a class just because your friend did, there may be unintended consequences (like a drop and a Withdraw Fail on your transcript, which will negatively impact your grade point average). Also, students, be honest with yourself about how hard you re willing and able to work for success. Choose the type and number of courses that match the time and effort level you are able to give, keeping in mind that your job, church, volunteering, hobbies, extra-curricular activities, family and friends, college and scholarship applications, and homework all require some of your time each day/week. Ultimately, students class loads/course selection should be challenging, rewarding, and prepare them for life after high school. Our registrar and counselors are happy to assist students and parents in the registration process. 4 NOTES FROM THE NURSE Happy new year to everyone. I hope you had a great break and are caught up on rest. Studies show that just ½ hour more of sleep every night can boost your immune system s ability to fight infections. Influenza: Influenza A is in the area and in the schools. It can affect you in a serious way! Here are some steps you can take to reduce your risk. Get a flu shot! There have been reports that the flu shot this year did not cover Influenza A as well as was hoped. However, it is still recommended that you receive it, as it protects against other strains of influenza. If you received the vaccine and you still get the flu, your illness may be less severe than if you had not received it. Children younger than 6 months are you small to receive the vaccine, but are at risk for the illness, as are others with medical conditions. That is why if you receive the flu shot it will aid in keeping both you and those most vulnerable from becoming ill. There is free vaccine available for anyone 6 months-18 years. Contact your health provider or the SD DOH for information. Minimize the spread of germs (I know you have heard this before!): Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizers often, especially if you are ill. Cover your nose and mouth with your elbow when you sneeze or cough. (We may issue you a mask at school). Stay home if you are sick and avoid others who you know are ill. If you have a fever, the CDC recommends staying home 24 hours AFTER the fever is gone and without the use of medication to control it. Don t share utensils, cups, or straws or drink from the same bottles or cans. Drink plenty of fluids. Not only will staying hydrated help you feel better, but it keeps the microscopic filters in your nose moist and better able to filter germ particles. Avoid touching your hands to your nose, mouth, or eyes. Disinfect common surfaces-refrigerator handles, light switches, phones, computer keyboards, toilet handles, etc. If you get sick, contact your doctor. Anti-viral medication may be prescribed if caught early, and this can reduce the length of time you are ill. If you have any respiratory difficulties, or concerns about breathing or dehydration, contact your doctor immediately. For more information, go to Cindy Begley, RN Hello Stevens High Parents & Community, I wanted to share an upcoming conference and leadership opportunity for Stevens High School students. It is the West river SADD conference. SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. This conference will be March 31st-April 1st at Cedar Canyon Camp in Rapid City. The event will consist of interactive leadership activities, guest speakers, a keynote speaker, fun games, and an evening dance. It is a chance for students to meet other high schoolers from around the region, connect with their peers, and create positive peer environments in their schools.
