2 Glossary of Terms for Chapter 72 Antigenic shift: a sudden change in the antigen or protein substances on the surface of a virus, usually as a result of genetic mutation. Epidemic: an outbreak of a disease or illness that spreads rapidly throughout a segment of a human population, affecting a significantly large number of people at the same time. Pandemic: outbreak of a disease or illness over a wide geographic area or worldwide, and affecting an exceptionally high proportion of the population. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): equipment beyond standard precautions required to protect health care personnel from contact with chemical, physical and biological agents via respiratory, skin, eye and mucous membrane routes. Vaccination: any injection of attenuated or killed microorganisms given to induce immunity or to reduce the effects of associated infectious diseases. Vaccine: a suspension of attenuated or killed microorganisms administered orally or by injection to induce active immunity to infectious agents. 2
