2018 Ascension Infection Prevention 1. Course 1.1 Infection Prevention 1.2 Main Objectives Additional Objectives Understand the purpose of the Corporate Responsibility Program State examples of expected behaviors as referenced in the Standards of Conduct Have a general understanding of some of the laws that regulate healthcare Know how to report compliance issues and concerns
1.3 Infection Prevention and Control Definition of Corporate Responsibility: Our commitment to meeting all legal and regulatory requirements and operating in accordance with ethical business practices. Knowing the policies, procedure and laws that relate to your work Learning through training and education Asking for help when something doesn t make sense or seem right What is Corporate Responsibility? (In the Chain of Infection)
2. The Environment: Transmission and Disinfection 2.1 The Environment and Contamination Note that when the slide is hard to read, the content will be repeated directly below the slide. Content Above: In one study, cultures were taken from the hands of Healthcare Workers (HCW) who touched both the patient and the patient s environment. No HCW touched only the patient. The results show that of the HCW s whose hand samples were negative when they entered the room, 52% contaminated their hands or gloves after touching the environment, and 70% contaminated their hands or gloves after touching the patient and the environment. This study underscores that HCW s are just as likely to have contaminated hands or gloves after touching the environment in a patient s room as after touching a colonized patient and the patient s environment. Hands and gloves can become contaminated even with no direct contact with the patient and that the inanimate environment plays a role in facilitating transmission of organisms. Perform hand hygiene after removal of gloves. 2.2 Environmental Surfaces
Content Above: Surface disinfection is crucial to reduce the amount of pathogens in the environment so they do not cause infection Low level disinfection involves cleaning and disinfecting surfaces whenever visibly contaminated and on a routine and frequent basis (e.g. daily). Sprays or wipes are appropriate (use only hospital approved agents). Contact time for the disinfectant is important! This means the wet to dry time for the surface being disinfected. Always read product labels. 3. Healthcare Associated Infections 3.1 Healthcare Associated infection Content Above: What is an HAI o o An infection that occurs after a patient has been admitted to a hospital or other type of healthcare setting About 1 out of every 25 patients will develop an HAI while receiving medical treatment Examples of HAI o o o o Surgical Site Infections (SSI) Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) Catheter Associated Blood Stream Infections (CLABSI) Multi Drug Resistant Organisms (MDRO) Ex: MRSA, VRE or C. DIff
HAI (Additional Facts) Content Above: HAI s can Cause Longer hospitalization and treatment Increased Healthcare costs Result in harm or death more than breast and prostate cancer combined HAI s are PREVENTABLE! Reducing the risk of infection in ALL patients is a national priority Many strategies are in place to reduce HAI risk Preventing infections is everyone s responsibility o o o Be aware Follow policies and procedures Be a team player Do YOUR part!
3.2 HAI Infographic Serious Problem (of HAI s) Financial Impact (of Adverse Events)
4. Standard Precautions 4.1 Standard Precautions 4.2 Hand Hygiene Link for Slide Above: partnering to heal.asp
4.3 Hand Hygiene: Does it Matter? 4.4 Hand Hygiene: CDC Guidelines for Hand Hygiene Steps (Alcohol Based Hand Rub)
4.5 Hand Hygiene: CDC Guidelines for Hand Hygiene Steps (Handwashing) 4.6 Hand Hygiene: 5 Moments
Content Above: 1. Before touching a patient 2. Before clean/aseptic procedure 3. After body fluid exposure risk 4. After touching a patient 5. After touching patient surroundings 4.7 Hand Hygiene: Fingernails & Lotions Summary of Content Above: 1. Artificial nails, extenders and overlays, etc. will not be worn by associates delivering direct patient care or handling packaged patient care supplies and medications 2. Natural nail tips should be less than ¼ inch in length. 3. Nail polish must not be chipped or cracked 4. Lotion and soap should not be brought from home to clinical areas use hospital supplied product, only.
4.8 Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquette Content Above: Cover your mouth/nose when coughing or sneezing Use and dispose of tissues and perform hand hygiene frequently Wear a surgical/procedural mask if you are coughing/sneezing frequently, or are ill Offer a mask to those who are symptomatic, as appropriate. 4.9 Transmission Based Precautions Content Above: Certain diseases require added precautions beyond what standard precautions may cover. The CDC addresses this in a guidance document that our isolation policies are based on.
