2 Resident Spotlight for November 2 Our resident who has been here the longest, pretty close to when we opened the doors, Ray Dixson is our spotlight for this month. October 1st marked 11 years Ray has lived and enjoyed his time at Culpepper. Raymond was born October 25,1919 in Houston, Texas to Henry and Lula Dixson. Because of health reasons the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida.Ray was busy in High School, being involved in every sport there was to offer. After High School Ray went to work for his Dad s machine shop which would become his lifelong trade. The year 1939 Ray married Mildred whom he met at church. They would enjoy 63 wonderful years together. Ray s family, Mildred and Ray Jr. Mildred was a very talented painter Ray with his London s Tower Bridge When his Father s company was bought out by the army in 1941 Ray bounced around a bit to different machinist jobs until 1945 he would join the merchant marines which is now the Coast Guard, the Navy took him in after that but because of a bad back he was discharged. So in 1946 he would begin his 34 years with National Air Lines which would become Pan Am. In 1953 National moved to Miami, Florida and so did Ray and Mildred. Ray and his wife had one son, Ray Jr., some of Ray Sr s happiest
3 Resident Spotlight for November 3 Memories are spending time with his son. Every weekend they would do something, build airplanes, sports and fish. They bought a boat and would go out on the ocean and fish away the day. Ray tells me they even ventured out into the Bermuda Triangle, sounds like a fish story to me. One day they heard the news of a hurricane warning, telling that small boats should stay in the harbor, well their boat was 20 feet, so they thought nothing of it, when that boat was heading up and over high vertical waves they both decided, yes, they had a small boat and headed back to port. Can you imagine the changes he saw while in Miami for 27 years! When Ray retired in 1980 they followed their son who had by then moved to Omaha, Arkansas and lived on his land for a while until moving into Culpepper. If you walk into Ray s room you will find fantastic matchstick models, the last one is his crowning glory a replica of the Tower Bridge in London( shown on the front and down below) He has also built other fun objects, a chess set all out of nuts and bolts, his son has the best one though made out of aircraft parts! Ray likes to keep his hands and mind busy, he is known as our fix it, solver, and idea gentleman. If you need something done he s the man! Some of Ray s creations, how does that faucet work anyway! He d love to show them to you

6 Dear Residents and Families, According To Wayne s World 6 As we are coming into the influenza season, we want to remind you how critical it is to wash your hands. As you touch people, surfaces and objects throughout the day, you accumulate germs on your hands. In turn, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Although it's impossible to keep your hands germ-free, washing your hands frequently can help limit the transfer of bacteria, viruses and other microbes. Always wash your hands before: Preparing food or eating, treating sores, giving medicine, or caring for a sick or injured person, inserting or removing contact lenses Always wash your hands after: Preparing food, especially raw meat or poultry, using the toilet, touching an animal or animal toys, leashes, or waste Blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hands, cough or sneeze into your elbow, treating wounds or caring for a sick or injured person, handling garbage, household or garden chemicals, or anything that could be contaminated such as a cleaning cloth or soiled shoes. Always wash your hands whenever they look dirty. Let s all work together this flu season to prevent the spread of any germs that may develop and cause all of us to become ill. Angie Haile, LPN Health and Wellness Wayne Rainey Community Director
