5 Stopping Germs AWAY FROM HOME Handwashing Handwashing is the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection. CDC (The Center Disease Control) Some viruses and bacteria can live from 20 minutes up to 2 hours or more on surfaces like cafeteria tables, doorknobs, and desks. (Ansari, 1988; Scott and Bloomfield, 1989) The flu has caused high rates of absenteeism among students and staff in our country s 119,000 schools. Influenza is not the only respiratory infection of concern in schools nearly 22 million schools days are lost each year to the common cold alone. However, when children practice healthy habits, they miss fewer days of school. CDC (The Center Disease Control) Alcohol-Based Hand Wipes and Gel Sanitizers Work Too In the course of a year, people in the U.S. suffer through an estimated 1 billion colds. (1) From 25 to 50 million cases of the flu are reported in the U.S. each year, leading to 150,000 hospitalizations and 30,000 40,000 deaths. (2) The good news: Zep offers a number of hand sanitizers, hand soaps and hard surface disinfectants that are highly effective against cold and flu viruses. The more you know, the better you can protect yourself and others in your workplace or facility. (1) National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (2) flufacts.com One of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their noses or eyes after touching someone or something that s contaminated with the cold virus (rhinovirus). Source : CDC. Human Parainfluenza Viruses (Common cold and croup) We invite you to join in the fight against the spread of germs!
