1 <Indonesia> Tsunami Situation Report Date: Number: 35 Country: Indonesia Prepared by: Trine Ladegaard in consultation with WRO Jakarta and Banda Aceh Field Office Please update daily information (only new developments from the last 24hrs) to send latest by 00:00 IST * 1. Key issues (Developments over the past 24hrs, including priority needs and constraints, and the major actions that have taken place, etc) The measles campaign is progressing in NAD and in North Sumatra. Ten clinical measles cases have been reported by an NGO in Aceh Utara district. In Meulaboh, the trend in Malaria has been looked into and local physicians assert that malaria activity is normal and not tsunami-related. The number of bodies buried is decreasing. Difficulties in retrieving them due to lack of heavy equipment is thought to be one of the main reasons. 2. Situation Update* (Situation analysis, including major developments in the past 24hrs) Casualties As of 30 January, the number of bodies buried in NAD and NS stands at 105,064 and 127,773 persons are reportedly missing while the number of IDPs is 417,124 at 37 location points ( NAD only). It is also reported that there are about 260,000 IDPs who are living outside the relocation sites with their relatives. (Source: Bakornas ) It remains unclear whether the 260,000 IDPs living outside the shelters should be counted in addition to the 417,124 making the total number 677,124 or whether they are already counted in the reported total. Bakornas also reports that there is a significant decrease in the number of bodies recovered and buried (about 50%). One reason given are the difficulties in reaching affected areas due to limited supporting equipment for evacuation such as excavators and trucks. The number of in-patients registered by MoH as of 31 January 2005 was 3,900 and the number of out-patients 71, Health status and trend* 1
2 Communicable Diseases please indicate number of cases if available and source if available commenting on reliability As per 30 January, MoH is reporting that the measles vaccination campaign have covered 77,842 children (58,7%) in Aceh. For North Sumatra, the coverage up to 30 January is 2,000 children (20,3%). As of 31 January, the MoH reports a total of 59 clinical cases of Malaria, of which 8 are Malaria Falciparum. From WHO Aceh Epi report : A field investigation mission to Suak Beukah, Patek, on the west coast of Aceh to follow up on confirmed typhoid case diagnosed in Banda Aceh has taken place. No further cases identified. Alerts: o Ten clinical measles cases reported by CARDI, an NGO, in Aceh Utara district to Provincial Health authorities. The cases have been isolated and treated and contacts have been vaccinated. Further immunization activities will be undertaken by provincial health authorities and MOH. o Suspected dengue/typhoid fever in Aceh Jaya district. NGO to follow up with samples. Updates: o Bloody diarrhea: One case reported from Lonehga by the Turkish Red Crescent. Under investigation. o After the completion of measles vaccination in the IDP camps, the last leg of the campaign is planned for Lhoong where 24 of the 28 villages are known to have been destroyed. The remaining 4 villages can be reached only by air. Chopper support may be needed to reach immunization to the children in these devastated villages. Malaria data from medical records and laboratory in Meubolah has been extracted (see graph below). Local physicians assert that malaria activity is normal and not tsunami-related. 2

Other health issues (Mother and child health, mental health etc) The MoH reports that 40 pregnant women have been identified in the camps, 7 of which were delivering inside the camps because there is no car to refer to the hospitals. Health system and infrastructure (functioning health facilities, access etc) As of 31 January, the Ministry of Health reports that Aceh Jaya needs 2 ambulance cars. Medical services are also needed for Calang, Teunom, Lamno and Lhoknga. 4. WHO actions over the past 24hrs A joint planning mission between UNOCHA and WHO to establish the practical aspects of installing an operations base in Calang is planned for 31 Jan 05, whereas the joint UN exploratory mission to Tenoum due for 30/01/05 has been postponed till apx 02/02/05 to ensure interagency participation. WHO is still due to join this mission when it is undertaken. The base in Medan is well established, and WHO is taking a lead role in Health Sector coordination here. However, the number of NGOs active in health has reduced quite significantly in the last week. WHO donated two emergency health kits and one surgery kit to the MoH on 30/01/05 and will follow up on additional needs and gaps in service. 3
