3 Maintaining Healthy Lungs It is everyone's responsibility - the person with CF, parents, family, and health care team in maintaining healthy lungs for each and every person with CF

4 Maintaining Healthy Lungs Avoid tobacco smoke Set & stick to a CF plan of care Take prescribed medications Do treatments Following nutrition/dietary plan Do airway clearance Exercise regularly Routine visits to your CF center

5 Keeping Lungs Healthy: Hand Cleaning Available on the CF Foundation s Web site under Living with CF

6 Hand Hygiene Alcohol-based hand gels or Soap and water Clean your hands after Coughing, sneezing, nose blowing Respiratory treatments, airway clearance

7 Maintaining Healthy Lungs: Infection Control Hand hygiene Minimize contact With people who are ill Contact with people with CF Educate others

8 Respiratory Equipment DISINFECT items that touch the mouth or nose by one of following BOIL for 5 mins Microwave for 5 mins Dishwasher for 30 mins at 158 o F OR

9 Respiratory Equipment Soak in one of the following 1:50 dilution of household bleach for 3 mins 70% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol for 5 mins 3% hydrogen peroxide for 30 mins Then, RINSE with sterile water AIR DRY

10 How to Avoid Germs Hand hygiene Minimize contact with others who are ill or have CF Proper cleaning of respiratory equipment

11 Maintaining Your Health Regular visits to CF care center & primary care provider Routine immunizations Routine screening Health education

12 Maintaining Healthy Lungs: CF Center s Responsibility Work with you to write a plan of care that fits your CF needs and lifestyle Identify potential treatments - medicines, airway clearance, exercise, nutrition Monitoring your CF health - clinic visits, lung function, X-rays, lab tests

13 Maintaining Healthy Lungs: CF Center s Responsibility (cont.) Infection control Flu vaccine Educate Identify & initiate community resources Treat you or your child when ill

14 Clinic Visit: CF Lungs Physical exam lung sounds, etc. Pulmonary function test (PFT) FEV 1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) Vital signs (weight, height, oxygen level, etc.) Sputum/throat culture If needed, X-rays and lab tests

15 Changes in Your CF Lung Health Activity level School/work attendance Feeling run down /tired Respiratory symptoms (cough, mucus, etc.) Decreased appetite General symptoms (fatigue, headaches, etc.)

16 Communicate Changes Ask how your CF Center wants to be told that you or your child isn t feeling well Don t wait too long! Give details about the changes: breathing, appetite, activity level, etc. Be honest about how you re following your plan of care
