2 ToR: To provide services to the OIE, in particular within the region, in the designated specialty, in support of the implementation of OIE policies and, where required, seek for collaboration with OIE Reference Laboratories ToR: To identify and maintain existing expertise, in particular within its region 1. Activities as a centre of research, expertise, standardisation and dissemination of techniques within the remit of the mandate given by the OIE Training, capacity building Training course on the Diagnosis of Transboundary Animal Disease: Pathogen Typing Using Molecular Techniques was held from 25 August to 5 September 2014 at the National Veterinary Institute, Debre Zeit, Ethiopia. The specific purpose of this training was to provide practical knowledge on different techniques used for virus typing and subtyping and general knowledge on the epidemiology and control strategies for peste des petits ruminants (PPR), capripox disease (CaP), Newcastle disease (ND) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Diagnosis, biotechnology and laboratory Molecular epidemiology study of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) African Swine Fever virus (ASFV) and capripox virus (CaPV) In 2014, APHL analysed 672 pathological samples received from Asia and Africa for the diagnosis of PPR (55 samples from 4 countries, ASF (573 of new and historical samples from 8 countries) and capripox (44 samples from 2 countries). Vaccines Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) vaccine Improvement of the vaccine yield. ToR : To propose or develop methods and procedures that facilitate harmonisation of international standards and guidelines applicable to the designated specialty 2. Proposal or development of any procedure that will facilitate harmonisation of international regulations applicable to the surveillance and control of animal diseases, food safety or animal welfare Proposal title /Content Applicable area organisation of laboratory proficiency test A ring test was organized in 2014 for the harmonization and quality control nucleic acid based and ELISA-based diagnosis of PPR. Twenty four laboratories from Africa, Asia and Turkey were involved in that ring test.
