Each year Southwestern Medical Foundation sponsors a free public forum for the community to learn firsthand about diseases, medical progress and strategies for approaching today s major health-related issues. We invite you to join us this year as we learn about the bird flu, influenza outbreaks throughout history and their implications for the public from four experts who have distinguished themselves in the fields of infectious disease research and epidemiology.

Southwestern Medical Foundation M ore than 60 years ago, a small but dedicated group of private citizens and philanthropists established Southwestern Medical Foundation with the goal to improve medical education and health care in Dallas. The foundation created Southwestern Medical College in 1943, which six years later became a component institution in The University of Texas System. Today, Southwestern Medical Foundation continues this great mission through its support of UT Southwestern. It has provided funding for research, educational activities and scholarships. The generous support of private donors, together with careful management of existing funds, has positioned Southwestern Medical Foundation to pursue this vital work as we enter a new century. 3 2006 Southwestern Medical Foundation Public Forum Presented by faculty leaders from UT southwestern Medical Center Bird Flu: How concerned should I be? 6-7 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006 Tom and Lula Gooch Auditorium South Campus UT Southwestern 5323 Harry Hines Blvd. Dallas, Texas SOUTHWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER

moderator Robert Haley, M.D. Chief of epidemiology, Professor of Internal Medicine, and holder of the U.S. Armed Forces Veterans Distinguished Chair for Medical Research, Honoring America s Gulf War Veterans Dr. Haley started his career in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An expert in the epidemiology of infections, he founded the division of epidemiology at UT Southwestern in In the early 1990s, Dr. Haley began research into Gulf War illnesses and in 1997 published three breakthrough research papers on Gulf War illness in a single issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Robert Munford, M.D. Professor of internal medicine and microbiology, holder of the Jan and Henri Bromberg Chair in Internal Medicine History of pandemic influenza The incidence of influenza outbreaks have been documented throughout the course of human history. Dr. Munford, an infectious disease specialist, has a great interest in disease outbreaks and the human body s immune response to such diseases. Prior to joining the faculty of UT Southwestern, Dr. Munford was an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vaccines, Antiviral medications and personal infection control measures James Luby, M.D. Professor of Internal Medicine

How the influenza virus causes illness and mutates Beth Levine, M.D. Chief of infectious diseases, Professor of Internal Medicine and Microbiology, and holder of the Jay P. Sanford Professorship in Infectious Diseases Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious disease of the upper airways and the lungs, caused by a particular RNA virus. Dr. Levine is an internationally recognized specialist in the study of RNA viruses. She will discuss the methods in which the influenza virus can mutate within the body and spread. In recent years, increased immunity from antibodies and the development of influenza vaccines have limited the spread of the flu. There has not been a pandemic of influenza since , probably because there has not been the emergence of a potential pandemic strain of virus. Former chief of infectious diseases at UT Southwestern, Dr. Luby who began his career at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has had an interest in influenza virus, influenza vaccines and antiviral chemotherapy throughout his career at UT Southwestern. He will discuss vaccines and antiviral drugs.
