2 1 CDC Influenza Division Mission The Influenza Division provides the scientific and programmatic foundation and leadership for the diagnosis, prevention, and control of influenza domestically and internationally. In addition, the Influenza Division along with partners including other CDC entities, state and local health departments, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and World Health Organization (WHO): Conducts domestic influenza surveillance and supports global influenza surveillance to monitor the impact of influenza and guide influenza vaccine virus selection decisions. Conducts surveillance for human infections with influenza viruses of animal origin (also referred to as novel influenza A virus infections ) and conducts research at the animalhuman interface to assess the risk of human infection with novel influenza A viruses and ways to prevent transmission of animal viruses to humans. Conducts surveillance and research on the susceptibility of influenza viruses to antiviral medications.

3 2 Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) Geospatial Research Analysis and Services Program (GRASP) GRASP is the GIS center of excellence within CDC/ATSDR GRASP analysts and technical specialists perform operational activities including geocoding, advanced geospatial analysis, cartographic products, training, medical geography, public health consultation, exposure assessment, contaminant modeling, image analysis, health surveillance, applications development and system integration. GRASP maintains a robust GIS technology infrastructure that supports a large geospatial data warehouse and multiple applications GRASP supports the CDC Emergency Operations Center

4 3 FluView Interactive was developed for the Influenza Division to automate weekly flu reports into a rich interactive web application FluView is a weekly Influenza Surveillance Report prepared by the Influenza Division The goal is to create a rich and easy to use web-based application with the ability to view, interact and download data The technology stack is based on ESRI ArcGIS 10, Adobe Flex/Flash, SAS and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Application development is performed using an Agile/Scrum approach tailored to CDC s Enterprise Performance Lifecycle (EPLC) CDC FluView Website -

5 Data collected by CDC is analyzed and processed using SAS and automated to SQL Server through an Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) process 4

6 5 FluView Interactive Phase 1: Influenza-like Illness (ILI) Activity Indicator Map Data collected in ILINet are used to produce a measure of ILI activity for all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City. Activity levels are based on the percent of outpatient visits in a jurisdiction due to ILI compared to the average percent of ILI visits that occur during weeks with little or no influenza virus circulation (non-influenza weeks).

7 6 FluView Interactive Phase 2: Viral Surveillance Dashboard Approximately 80 U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Laboratories and 60 National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) laboratories located throughout the United States participate in virologic surveillance for influenza. All state public health laboratories participate as U.S. WHO collaborating laboratories along with some county public health laboratories and some large tertiary care or academic medical centers. Most NREVSS laboratories participating in influenza surveillance are hospital laboratories.

8 7 FluView Interactive Phase 3: Laboratory Confirmed Influenza Hospitalizations FluSurv-NET conducts surveillance for population-based, laboratory-confirmed influenza related hospitalizations in children (persons less than18 years) and adults. The network covers over 80 counties in the 10 Emerging Infections Program (EIP) states. Cases are identified by reviewing hospital laboratory and admission databases and infection control logs for children and adults with a documented positive influenza test.

9 8 FluView Interactive Phase 4: Influenza Associated Pediatric Mortality The Influenza-Associated Pediatric Mortality Surveillance System tracks influenza-associated deaths in children (persons less than 18 years), which was added as a nationally notifiable condition in Any laboratory-confirmed influenza-associated death in a child is reported through this system. Demographic and clinical information are collected on each case and are transmitted to CDC.
