Experimental work with viruses has provided important evidence that genes are made of nucleic acids. Viruses were also important in working out the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication, transcription, and translation. Class IV and V viruses contain single-stranded positive or negative sense RNA. Class VI viruses contain positive sense singlestranded RNA viruses that replicate through a DNA intermediate. Finally, Class VII viruses contain double-stranded DNA, but replicate through a single-stranded RNA intermediate.)
