Prevention through lifestyle Screening for your genes Screening for everyone Vaccinations Personal Medications Preparing for the worst! Your own personal medical kit and supplies
An ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of cure. Benjamin Franklin
The leading cause of death in the US in 2013, exceeding cancer was heart disease, which attributed to 611,105 deaths. This does not include increased Morbidity. Which I would describe as a significant decrease in Quality of Life. Risk Factors: Obesity, inactivity, poor diet, smoking, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, excessive alcohol use and diabetes. Most of which are preventable.

Basic screening lab work and tests Gene testing where appropriate You can choose your friends but you sho can t choose your family, Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Colonoscopy beginning age 50 unless there is a family history. Every 10 years or more frequent if there are abnormalities. PSA to screen for prostate cancer for males starting age 50 unless family history indicates starting earlier. Mammograms starting at age 40. Most insurance companies pay for screening tests.
Controversial? Measles as an example: over 100 deaths attributed to Measles Vaccine over the last 10 years. In contrast: When statistics on measles infections in the US first began to be reported in 1912, 6000 deaths were reported annually from the disease. As health care improved, deaths had dropped to 500 deaths annually by 1963 when the vaccine was first introduced. By 2000 measles elimination was documented in the US. In 2014 the US reported 644 cases, a record number since Worldwide, Measles caused 145,700 deaths in The WHO estimates the vaccine prevented 15.6 million deaths from worldwide.
It is a Risk vs. Benefit decision you decide! Current recommendations for all adults: seasonal flu vaccine, Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whooping cough) Adults over 60: Pneumococcal vaccine and Shingles Vaccine Other vaccines are recommended for those with certain health conditions or with travel. Talk to your Doctor.

This can be difficult for many reasons, Cost being one. Ask your physician for samples where possible. If on an affordable generic drug pay cash to obtain a 3 month supply. Check with your insurance as many allow 3 month prescriptions.
If you are paying cash for your prescriptions talk with your physician about patient assistance programs and coupons provided through pharmaceutical companies. Splitting tablets.
Give me Six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four hours sharpening the axe. Abraham Lincoln
Medications Bandages Splints Wound preparation and cleaning Dental supplies Specialty medical equipment Wound Closure

Antibiotics for upper and lower respiratory infections: Amoxicillin, cephalexin, azithromycin (Z-Pac). Antibiotics for gastrointestinal or urinary tract infections: ciprofloxacin and sulfa based antibiotics. Antibiotics for skin infections: cephalexin and sulfa based antibiotics.
Topical antibiotics: (bactericidal) These antibiotic ointments actually kill bacteria and include prescription topical antibiotics. (Bacteriostatic) These antibiotic ointments stop the spread of the infection and prevent infection and include the over the counter Ointments. Topical antifungal: Lamisil or Lotrimin topical medications that can be purchased over the counter.
Antiviral: There are very few prescription antiviral, and are specific for certain disease conditions. For most viruses we encounter, there is no established treatment. Stock up on anything you have found is helpful for you such as Zinc Lozenges, Vitamin C, Essential Oils etc.
Peto Bismol (Bismuth subsalicylate): good all around medication, as it helps with nausea, diarrhea and indigestion. Imodium (loperamide): Stops diarrhea. Essential to prevent dehydration. Antacids: Tums, Zantac etc. What ever your personal favorite is. Mylanta or Maalox: Good antacid, but also helps with constipation. Versatile
Non drowsy Antihistamines: Claritin (loratadine), Zyrtec (cetirizine) and Allegra (fexofenadine) are all available over the counter in both brand name and generic form. Drowsy Antihistamines: Benadryl (diphenhydramine), works great for a lot of people and great to have around as it is a good sleep aide.
Hydrocortisone cream: available over the counter great for itching and rashes. This is not very potent so for those with more severe conditions such as eczema, you may want a prescription strength steroid cream. Calamine or Benadryl lotion: helps with itching from allergic reactions Epi pen: injectable epinephrine for anaphylaxis.
Dextromethorphan (DM): cough suppressant Guaifenesin: Expectorant Pseudoephedrine /phenylephrine: decongestant These may be something you want to include if they have been helpful for you. All of these ingredients can be obtained separate or together in one medication. Most brands have all the same ingredients.
Ibuprofen/Aleve: Anti inflammatory that will help with pain, inflammation and swelling as well as reduce fever. Acetaminophen: pain reliever, reduces fever, best pain reliever if someone is bleeding heavily as it will not affect blood clotting. Aspirin: Essential not just for pain control, but great to have around in case of possible heart attack.(chew a non coated 325 mg aspirin)
Opiate pain medications: you may want something stronger depending on personal history of yourself or your family. These are controlled substances and can be habit forming. Be careful with these!

Study found in Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine 18 oils were tested, 14 showed antibacterial activity. Cinnamon verum showed the best efficacy. The study was done in a Petri dish (in vitro) not on people (in vivo). All the oils were much less effective than the Amoxicillin Control group.
The researchers felt the study was compelling, but that more research would need to be done to evaluate the safety using the dilution from the study on live patients. They also expressed concerns about whether there would be drug interactions and were concerned about the variable chemical compositions of the same essential oils due to cultivation conditions and chemo types.
All over the counter complimentary medical treatments are not required at this point to show safety and efficacy data before being sold. (1994 Dietary and Supplement Act) Many are very effective, but before using them you should seek out sources such as the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, among other sources, to find out which are the most effective and safe for their proposed use, and how best to administer them based on what evidence is available. There may come a time where pharmaceutical medications are not available. A knowledge of complimentary treatments like herbs and oils will be beneficial.
Think of prescription medications and what were once considered alternative medications as complimentary medications that can be used together to improve our health.
Bandages for controlling bleeding: Highly absorbent bandages such as BloodStopper, and Nu-Gauze, gauze roll bandages and tampons. Ace bandages or Koflex are effective ways to hold these dressings in place and to add compression.
Waterproof bandages: Tagaderm, 3M Clean Seals and Curad Aqua-Protect. Band Aids : The elastic knit type bandages stick well, stay on longer and conform to the body. Newer Flexible foam Plastic bandages are also a good option, though some brands due not hold well on damp skin. Remember to have a variety of size and shapes for different parts of the body.

Sam Splint: stands for Structural Aluminum Malleable. This is the best all around splinting material in my opinion. Very versatile, can be cut to different sizes. Held in place with Ace Bandage or Koflex. It is light weight, comes in sheets and rolls.
Betadine (Povidone Iodine 10% solution) Rubbing alcohol I do not like the single towlettes that come pre packaged. They dry out easily. I would buy a large bottle of each and fill small 1/2-1 oz. bottles for your first Aid kit. Have cotton balls available for application. Plenty of water for irrigation this is the most important. For home, bottles of saline Solution.
For First Aid kits you need to make sure you have a method to sterilize water for wound irrigation. Matches to boil water, Iodine tablets or crystals, Potassium Permanganate(crystals that can be added to water) and Chlorine Dioxide (drops that can be added to water). Make sure you have syringes in your kit to irrigate wounds and tweezers to remove debris. An antiseptic cleanser such as Hibiclens and gauze can be used to scrub wounds.
Temporary filling: Cavit is the best as you do not have to mix two compounds and hardens with just saliva. Floss Clove Oil for pain Tooth brush
Gloves: Non Latex Vinyl or nitrile gloves. Multiple pairs. Face masks: They vary in level of protection N95 or above, Respirators also an option but should be fitted. CPR Shield: CPR Microshield, is the smallest and lightest. Instruments: Tweezers, hemostats, scissors, needles, syringes, safety pins, scalpel blade, finger nail clippers.
Checking Vital Signs: Blood pressure cuff, stethoscope and thermometer. First Aid Book: Great reference to accompany your training and knowledge. A Notebook: write down directions on medications there usages and doses along with any other useful information such as emergency contact numbers. Anything else you want to have available

Suture Kit: If you are trained and comfortable. This would include suture, sterile gloves, hemostats, surgical scissors, forceps, Syringes and needles, disposable scalpel blades and anesthetic. Steri Strips: Mastisol important to help the steri strips to hold. Sterile Staples: for scalp wounds

Start working to obtain a supply of items that you feel would be useful to have in your home for your medical use. Then put together various First Aid kits for the different situations you will be in. For example a small one to always have under the seat of your car, a travel kit for bigger trips, a wilderness kit for camping. Each kit should fit your needs given the situation. Pre made comprehensive kits are very expensive to buy.
Don t just collect supplies. Collect supplies that fits your families needs. Learn how to use the supplies you have. Become Confident and trained. Consider a CPR or first aid course. This can be done on line or at locations like the American Red Cross and YMCA which offer classes. This is by no means all inclusive. Find what fits for you.
If you believe you can accomplish everything by cramming at the eleventh hour, by all means do not lift a finger now. But you may think twice about starting to build your ark once it has already started raining. Max Brooks
