5 Mortality Percentage of pneumonia and influenza deaths exceeded epidemic threshold for 8 consecutive weeks (January 11 March 1, 2014) Peaked at 8.7% week ending January 25, 2014 Mortality 109 influenza-associated pediatric deaths for season 0-2 years (44%) No underlying medical conditions (48%) Hospitalizations 9,635 hospitalizations reported to FluSurv-NET Persons accounted for 57% of hospitalizations Highest incidence rate in 65 & older (88.1 per 100,000) Adults: 89% had at least one underlying medical condition Among women 15-44, 22% were pregnant 5

7 Viral MDCH identified 399 positive flu specimens 92% A viruses, 8% B viruses Subtyped A viruses: 93% ph1n1, 7% H3N2 Positive specimens peak week ending January 11, 2014 No specimens identified as resistant to antivirals Mortality 3 influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported 2 confirmed ph1n1, 1 was A not subtyped All 3 were 0-4 years Hospitalizations IHSP data still being finalized, 254 hospitalizations (74 pediatric, 180 adult) as of September 2014 Pediatric incidence rate 35.4 per 100,000; adult 26.4 per 100,000 Sentinel hospital network: 12 hospitals throughout state reported 458 hospitalizations had highest number of hospitalizations (31%), followed by 65 & older (26%), (26%) 78% of reported hospitalizations occurred December January 7
