1 Keeping Clean: Stopping the spread of infection and germs How we stop infections from spreading Easy Read Version This leaflet is for service users, their families and carers. It explains how you can stop the spread of infections.

2 What is an infection? An infection is an illness. It can be caused by a bacteria, virus or fungus. Some bacteria is in our body already. This is called natural bacteria. They do not cause any illness. But if you have a cut on your skin, bacteria from somewhere else could get in your body. You could get an infection from it. Why do people get infections? Some infections are nothing to worry about. These can be things like coughs and colds.

3 But some infections are more serious. For example MRSA is an infection that can make you very ill. You would have to go and see a doctor if you got an infection like this. They can make you very ill. Blood Poisoning Serious infections can be things like: Blood Poisoning Wound infection Wound infections this means infections that get in because of cuts in your skin AIDS AIDS

4 What can cause infection? 1. Patients that are very ill have a higher chance of getting an infection. 2. A patient who has an operation also has a higher chance of getting an infection. 3. People in hospital have a higher chance of getting an infection. This is because they are near people who might have infections.

5 How does an infection spread? There are lots of ways that infections can be spread. Here is a list of them: Through the air: Some infections get carried through the air while you are outside. The chicken pox virus is one example of this. Chicken Pox Through moisture: Some infections are spread through drops of moisture. People might breathe them in or get them on their hands. This can happen if: If someone coughs If someone is sick or throws up If someone sneezes

6 When this happens the moisture might land on someone else. This could cause infection. Through touching: If you touch someone who has an infection, you can get it too. Or you could get an infection from dirty equipment. For example someone might have touched a machine without washing their hands.

7 How can we stop infection? We have to make sure hospital staff do not get ill or have infections. For example we give new staff vaccinations to stop them getting ill. A vaccination stops people from catching different illnesses. We use a needle for this. We then make sure you don t have any infections. We might need to take a swab. This could be from your nose or your mouth. This gets sent to the laboratory for testing. This helps us decide if you need any treatment or medication.

8 You might have to go in another room if you have an infection. This is to make sure other patients are safe. What can you do to help us? I ve been feeling ill lately... If you have been ill or had an infection recently, please tell us straight away. Chicken Pox Tummy bug Also please tell us if you have had any of these: Chicken Pox A tummy bug MRSA MRSA You also need to tell us if someone who visits you gets an infection. This might be a family member, a Carer or a friend.

9 Washing your hands This is a good way of stopping infections. What can we do? All of the staff at the hospital should wash their hands. They need to do this before they touch you, and afterwards. When we say staff we mean: Doctors Nurses Ambulance Staff Surgeons Managers Care Teams Cleaners

10 Staff and patients should use Hand Rub Gel to wash their hands. Even if your hands look clean you should still wash them. This is because germs and infections can t always be seen. Have you washed your hands? What can you do? Ask the staff if they have washed their hands before they touch you. Have you washed your hands? If someone comes to visit you, ask them to wash their hands too. You can also help by making sure your hands are clean too

11 Keeping the hospital clean What can we do? We do our best to try to keep the hospital clean. But if there are any problems the following people will help sort it out: Senior nurses Managers The infection control team Sometimes a ward might have to be closed because of infection. For example it could be because of diarrhoea or someone being sick. If this happens the nursing staff will tell you what to do. The ward is not very clean... What can you do? If you think an area is not clean please tell the staff straight away.

12 You can also help by keeping your own room clean. Please throw away any rubbish. You need to throw away things like: Dirty cups, tissues and left over food. You have a cabinet next to your bed to put your things in. Please use this to keep your things tidy. Keeping hospital equipment clean What can we do? We make sure our equipment is cleaned after the patient goes home. That machine needs fixing! It is up to the staff to report if the equipment needs cleaning or mending.

13 I saw some equipment that needs a clean! What can you do? You can tell us if you think something needs cleaning or mending. This can help us a lot. Using protective clothing What can we do? Our staff will wear protective clothing if it s needed. Sometimes they will wear an apron and gloves. This is important as the staff could get infections from things like: Spit Blood Vomit Wee Pooh

14 Sometimes the staff have to wear masks. This stops them from breathing in an infection. Sometimes the staff will wear goggles too. They stop things from getting into their eyes. MRSA Hepatitis What can you do? When you come to hospital please tell us if you had infections before. Please tell us if you have had any of these: MRSA Hepatitis B or C HIV HIV If you tell us this it helps us keep other patients safe.

15 Staff who have been hurt What can we do? Sometimes we will need to take blood from our patients. We do this by using a needle. If a member of staff is accidently pricked by one of these needles they might get an infection. If this happens someone should be told straight away. The member of staff will need a blood test. This is to check if they have an illness or infection. We will need a blood sample from you as well.

16 We will do our best to make sure accidents like this do not happen. We will make sure we always use needles safely. What can you do? Hepatitis When you come in to hospital please tell us if you have any illnesses. HIV If you have any of these illnesses below it is very important that you tell us: Hepatitis B or C HIV AIDS AIDS

17 How can I find out how clean my hospital is? You can look at the notice board in your ward. There are charts showing how well we have been doing in keeping the ward clean. If you want more information please visit our website: Or you can get in touch with us at: Infection Control Team St Ann s Hospital London N15 3TH Tel:

18 Grime Watch: Keeping Your Hospitals Clean If you see any area, or equipment or a member of staff that you don t think is clean, please tell us! Tell us if one of the staff has not washed their hands as well. Fill out this form to tell us about it. What did you see that was not clean? Write about it here:

19 Where did you see it? What part of the hospital was this in? Write it here: When did you see it? Write the time it happened here: Write the date it happened here: Please send this form to: Infection Control Team St Ann s Hospital London N15 3TH Or just put it in the Grime Watch box in your ward.
