It is caused by the influenza virus, which can be spread by cughing, sneezing, r nasal secretins. Anyne can get influenza, but rates f infectin are highest amng children. Fr mst peple, symptms last nly a few days. They include: fever/chills sre thrat fatigue cugh headache muscle aches runny r stuffy nse Other illnesses can have the same symptms and are ften mistaken fr influenza. Yung children, peple 65 and lder, pregnant wmen, and peple with certain health cnditins such as heart, lung r kidney disease r a weakened immune system can get much sicker. Flu can cause high fever and pneumnia, and make existing medical cnditins wrse. It can cause diarrhea and seizures in children. Each year thusands f peple die frm influenza and even mre require hspitalizatin. By getting flu vaccine yu can prtect yurself frm influenza and may als avid spreading influenza t thers. 2. 2 Live, attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) cntains live but attenuated (weakened) influenza virus. It is sprayed int the nstrils. Inactivated (killed) influenza vaccine, the flu sht, is given by injectin with a needle. This vaccine is described in a separate Vaccine Infrmatin Statement. Influenza viruses are always changing, s annual vaccinatin is recmmended. Each year scientists try t match the viruses in the vaccine t thse mst likely t cause flu that year. Flu vaccine will nt prevent disease frm ther viruses, including flu viruses nt cntained in the vaccine. It takes up t 2 weeks fr prtectin t develp after the vaccinatin. Prtectin lasts abut a year. LAIV des nt cntain thimersal r ther preservatives. 3. Wh can receive LAIV? LAIV is recmmended fr healthy peple 2 thrugh 49 years f age, wh are nt pregnant and d nt have certain health cnditins (see #4, belw). 4. Sme peple shuld nt receive LAIV. LAIV is nt recmmended fr everyne. The fllwing peple shuld get the inactivated vaccine (flu sht) instead: Adults 50 years f age and lder r children frm 6 thrugh 23 mnths f age. (Children yunger than 6 mnths shuld nt get either influenza vaccine.) Children yunger than 5 years with asthma r ne r mre episdes f wheezing within the past year. Pregnant wmen. Peple wh have lng-term health prblems with: heart disease kidney r liver disease lung disease metablic disease, such as diabetes asthma anemia, and ther bld disrders Anyne with certain muscle r nerve disrders (such as seizure disrders r cerebral palsy) that can lead t breathing r swallwing prblems. Anyne with a weakened immune system. 3 Anyne in clse cntact with smene whse immune system is s weak they require care in a prtected envirnment (such as a bne marrw transplant unit). Clse cntacts f ther peple with a weakened immune system (such as thse with HIV) may receive LAIV. Healthcare persnnel in nenatal intensive care units r nclgy clinics may receive LAIV. Children r adlescents n lng-term aspirin treatment. Tell yur dctr if yu have any severe (life-threatening) allergies, including a severe allergy t eggs. A severe allergy t any vaccine cmpnent may be a reasn nt t get the vaccine. Allergic reactins t influenza vaccine are rare. Tell yur dctr if yu ever had a severe reactin after a dse f influenza vaccine. Tell yur dctr if yu ever had Guillain-Barré Syndrme (a severe paralytic illness, als called GBS). Yur dctr will help yu decide whether the vaccine is recmmended fr yu. Tell yur dctr if yu have gtten any ther vaccines in the past 4 weeks. Anyne with a nasal cnditin serius enugh t make breathing difficult, such as a very stuffy nse, shuld get the flu sht instead. Peple wh are mderately r severely ill shuld usually wait until they recver befre getting flu vaccine. If yu are ill, talk t yur dctr abut whether t reschedule the vaccinatin. Peple with a mild illness can usually get the vaccine. 5. When shuld I receive influenza vaccine? Get the vaccine as sn as it is available. This shuld prvide prtectin if the flu seasn cmes early. Yu can get the vaccine as lng as illness is ccurring in yur cmmunity. Influenza can ccur at any time, but mst influenza ccurs frm Octber thrugh May. In recent seasns, mst infectins have ccurred in January and February. Getting vaccinated in December, r even later, will still be beneficial in mst years. Adults and lder children need ne dse f influenza vaccine each year. But sme children yunger than 9 years f age need tw dses t be prtected. Ask yur dctr. Influenza vaccine may be given at the same time as ther vaccines. 6. What are the risks frm LAIV? A vaccine, like any medicine, culd pssibly cause serius prblems, such as severe allergic reactins. The risk f a vaccine causing serius harm, r death, is extremely small. 4 Live influenza vaccine viruses very rarely spread frm persn t persn. Even if they d, they are nt likely t cause illness. LAIV is made frm weakened virus and des nt cause influenza. The vaccine can cause mild symptms in peple wh get it (see belw). Mild prblems: Sme children and adlescents 2-17 years f age have reprted: runny nse, nasal cngestin r cugh fever headache and muscle aches wheezing abdminal pain r ccasinal vmiting r diarrhea Sme adults years f age have reprted: runny nse r nasal cngestin sre thrat cugh, chills, tiredness/weakness headache Severe prblems: Life-threatening allergic reactins frm vaccines are very rare. If they d ccur, it is usually within a few minutes t a few hurs after the vaccinatin. If rare reactins ccur with any prduct, they may nt be identified until thusands, r millins, f peple have used it. Millins f dses f LAIV have been distributed since it was licensed, and the vaccine has nt been assciated with any serius prblems. The safety f vaccines is always being mnitred. Signs f a severe allergic reactin can include difficulty breathing, harseness r wheezing, hives, paleness, weakness, a fast heart beat r dizziness. What shuld I d? Call a dctr, r get the persn t a dctr right away. Tell the dctr what happened, the date and time it happened, and when the vaccinatin was given. Ask yur dctr t reprt the reactin by filing a Vaccine Adverse Event Reprting System (VAERS) frm.
