GLOBAL AND REGIONAL SITUATION OF AVIAN INFLUENZA Dr Gounalan Pavade OIE Regional Expert Group Meeting for the Control of Avian Influenza in Asia Sapporo, Japan 3-5 October

Avian influenza Outbreaks of avian influenza continue to be a global public health concern (2458 human infections) and animal health concern (killed and destruction of millions and millions of poultry) HPAI is a disease of global interest due to the continued increase in the number of affected countries (80 countries) and subtypes (14 strains) The disease continue to be a top priority topic at international coordination and cooperation through joint collaboration with WHO and FAO 2

Legal obligation for AI disease notification in animals 181 Member Countries in 2017 Legal obligation for all Member Countries to report to the OIE One of the main missions of the OIE is to ensure transparency of worldwide animal disease situation including zoonosis 3

World Animal Health Information system (WAHIS) WAHIS provides a platform for collection, submission & access all data provided by countries An official OIE disease reporting format for clear & concise exchange of information Focal points under the responsibility of the Delegate, can submit information to the OIE 4

Global situation (Jan 2016 to March 2017) 154 countries/territories provided information on the disease, and 38% (59/154) reported the disease as present. Represent the highest number of countries affected since 2006 crisis. 56 countries/territories reported HPAI by means of immediate notifications, and 13% of them (7/56) reported the disease using as reason for notification first occurrence in the country. 5

Global situation (Jan 2016 to March 2017) The most common was subtype H5N8 (in 35 countries/territories in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East), followed by subtype H5N1 (in 18 countries/territories in the Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East), subtype H5N5 (in eight countries in Europe), H5N6 (in seven countries/territories in Asia), H5N2 (in three countries in the Americas, Asia and Europe), H5N3 (in Chinese Taipei), H5N9 (in France), H7N1 (in Algeria), H7N3 (in Mexico), H7N7 (in Italy), H7N8 (in the United States of America) and H7N9 (in China). For the first time since 1998, the subtype notified by the highest number of countries at global level was H5N8 and not H5N1 6

Global impact (Jan 2016 to March 2017) The global impact of the disease on animal and public health during the reporting period (2016 and early 2017) was huge. Almost 18,000,000 poultry were destroyed during this period, while 118 human deaths were registered (3 due to H5N1 and 115 due to H7N9 subtypes). For these reasons, sustained efforts to monitor avian influenza must be seen as a primary objective, in both domestic and wild birds 7

HPAI H5N1 situation Asian lineage H5N1 continued to be reported from few countries of Asia and Africa. Virus become enzootic in Asia and Africa and continues to cause outbreaks in poultry and sporadic human infections All cases of H5N1 infection in people have been associated with close contact with infected live or dead birds, or H5N1- contaminated environments Countries affected should focus on strengthening biosecurity measures to prevent introduction of disease into flocks and avoid contact of wild birds with poultry. 16

H7N9 situation Since its origin in 2013, the H7N9 virus remained LPAI in poultry mainly in China but caused over 1562 human infections (as of 13 September 2017). From early 2017, HPAI H7N9 reported from China H7N9 LPAIVs and HPAIVs have spread to multiple provinces in China Seven outbreaks of H7N9 HPAI in poultry in China have been reported during the past four months (May August). 17

HPAI H5N8 outbreaks in 2016/17 Situation in Europe 05/09/2017 In , HPAI H5N8 HPAI spread in Europe. In total, 25 countries in Europe have reported events for H5N8 in 2017 so far. Events are still on-going in 7 of them. In Europe since 19 October 2016: 1939 Total Outbreaks 45% of outbreaks in poultry 55% of outbreaks on wild birds 7,264,284 poultry destroyed 19

Impact of HPAI year wise Year Number of countries affected Number of outbreaks Number of poultry destroyed ,489 29,898, ,676 16,754, ,731 29,063,350 20

Conclusion HPAI continue to be a global and regional threat for both public and animal health Every year there is an increase in the number of affected countries and also the circulating subtypes H5N8 subtype was notified by the highest number of countries at global level surpassing H5N1 The OIE encourages its Member Countries to improve surveillance in poultry and wildlife and to continue to timely report all outbreaks information through WAHIS. Timely and accurate information allow deeper epidemiological analysis, and could help the Member Countries to adopt proper biosecurity measures to avoid the spread of the disease between farms and to limit the contact between poultry and wild birds. 21
