4 Immediate notifications A total of 55 immediate notifications have been submitted by Member Countries in Europe in 2012 (including events up to and including 23 August) The diseases most frequently notified were: infection with Schmallenberg virus (9 notifications) anthrax (5 notifications) foot and mouth disease (3 notifications) low pathogenic avian influenza in poultry (3 notifications) Newcastle disease (3 notifications) rabies (3 notifications)

6 Some highlights The reporting of extraordinary events contribute to the transparency and the global knowledge of infections diseases This year an emerging disease (Schmallenberg virus) has been the top disease reported via IN Ad hoc surveillance strategies and development of new rapid tests have been put in place by the countries The reporting of change in the epidemiology of H5N1 presenting cats as a new host for the infection (associated with an event of H5N1 in turkeys in Israel)

8 Simulation When a disease is absent, the simulation of a disease scenario is a good approach to review the emergency procedures A simulation exercise enables countries to evaluate their protocols for disease control / contingency plans carry out training programmes in an almost real scenario Countries inform the OIE about their simulation exercises OIE distributes the information through the OIE mailing list Simulation exercises usually relate to a single country but they can also involve a region or group of countries

11 Reporting For this 25 th Conference of the OIE Regional Commission 39 countries (74%) submitted a report on the animal health situation for countries (49%), as at date 10 th of September, have submitted the six-monthly reports all off them using World Animal Health Information System (WAHIS)

17 Rabies Important zoonotic viral disease Difficulties to control the disease in some countries of the region mainly due to the impact of wild/feral carnivores Oral vaccination of foxes is a common strategy to reduce transmission Occasional episodes of rabies are observed in companion animals imported from rabies positive countries when adequate preventive measures are not followed

20 Classical swine fever CSF is a highly contagious viral disease still present in Europe a top pig producing region difficulty in controlling the disease in the wild boar population Vaccination of domestic pigs and wild boars is used to control the spread of the disease The vaccine is effective to prevent losses in enzootic areas Specific surveillance of the wildlife population is required to determine the presence or absence of circulating virus

23 African swine fever ASF has recently become a topic of concern due to its introduction in Ukraine over last summer Since 2007 when it first appears in the Caucasus area in Georgia the disease has managed to spread and being maintain within the area affecting neighbouring countries like Russia and Armenia Rapid stamping out strategies during outbreaks are key to achieve the control of the disease Several countries in Europe have strategies in place for controlling ASF in case the disease occurs

30 Anthrax Second disease in the ranking of INs for the first eight months of 2012 The zoonotic potential cannot be overlooked Several human cases are reported in Europe every year There is an obvious seasonal pattern for this disease as we observed in the next slide which presents a seasonal-trend decomposition Typically, an outbreak in an enzootic area follows a prolonged hot dry spell which was preceded by rains

34 Brucellosis Brucella spp. is one of the top zoonosis in the world Three main species challenge livestock in the region: B. abortus, B. melitensis and B. suis Most of the countries have implemented monitoring programs and vaccination in ruminates is still implemented by some contrives B. abortus and B. melitensis has reoccurrence in France after almost 7 years of absence

38 Highlights Despite an overall good compliance in the reporting within the region, there are still some countries failing to submit the reports on time Coordination of the strategies among Easting European countries to control rabies in wild and feral carnivores is crucial The illegal importation of pets from thirds countries is a constant threat for introducing rabies in free zones

39 Highlights CSF and ASF are absent from most of the countries in Europe However it is important to maintain the watch to avoid transboundary events of these two diseases since it would have a dramatic impact on the pig industry Anthrax is a well-known disease and in most of the areas the countries preventive measures are taken in enzootic areas It should be borne in mind in the preventive campaigns the seasonal pattern of this disease, associated with changes in the temperature

40 Highlights Brucellosis is still present in several countries in the region and control strategies are widely implemented The reoccurrence of B. abortus and B. melitensis in France after almost 7 years of absence remind us on the need to maintain the watch and preventive measures, particularly on the introduction of new animals
