Additional indicators on high-frequency impulsive sounds and electromagnetic fields? Identification of indicator species for defining thresholds for the impacts. Collect further information on cumulative noise effects. Guidance on acoustic mapping for area-specific sounds budgets. Develop recommendations on noise reduction and mitigation measures. Ambient noise is the composite noise from all sources in a given environment excluding the selfnoise of the measuring equipment.

4 Zone of noise influence EC TSG Noise Work Programme (Richards et al. 1995) Assist in future target setting: A guidance addressing several ways in which MS may and describe GES in future and set targets including, where possible, examples. Additional indicators on high-frequency impulsive sounds and electromagnetic fields? Identification of indicator species for defining thresholds for the impacts. Collect further information Masking on cumulative noise effects. Guidance on acoustic mapping for area-specific sounds budgets. Develop recommendations etc on noise reduction and mitigation measures. Noise is unpleasant sound

5 EC Decision 2010/477/EU: Good Environmental Status of marine waters Two indicators for Descriptor 11 (Noise/Energy) of the MSFD 2008/56/EC. Indicator Distribution in time and place of loud, low and mid frequency impulsive sounds Proportion of days and their distribution within a calendar year over areas of a determined surface, as well as their spatial distribution, in which anthropogenic sound sources exceed levels that are likely to entail significant impact on marine animals measured as Sound Exposure Level or as peak sound pressure level at one metre, measured over the frequency band 10 Hz to 10 khz. Indicator Continuous low frequency sound Trends in the ambient noise level within the 1/3 octave bands 63 and 125 Hz measured by observation stations and/or with the use of models if appropriate. 5

7 THE ULMITATE GOAL OF BIAS IS to secure that the introduction of underwater noise is at levels that do not adversely affect the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. BIAS will work towards this goal by bridging the gap between the indicators of Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) descriptor 11 and actual management of human-induced underwater noise. by - ESTABLISHING STANDARDS - PRODUCING SOUNDSCAPE MAPS - DEMONSTRTATING TRANSNATIONAL MANAGEMENT OF UW NOISE 7

11 INVESTIGATION ON IMPULSIVE SOUNDS IN THE FINNISH WATERS, year 2012 The main sources of the underwater impulsive sounds are 1. Mud and sand dredging by grab and suction methods 2. Explosions with plastic dynamic, TNT and emulsion explosives 3. Seismic survey with vibracorers, diffrerent kind of sonars and small explosions 4. Drilling as pre-explosion work According to this study long lasting pile-driving or seismic survey do not seem to be as relevant in the Finnish waters as they are in some other European waters. 11
