DEAF EMPOWERMENT ACTIVITIES FOR LITERACY. EDUCATION, ACCESSIBLE DEVELOPMENT, EMPLOYMENT, REHBAILITATION & SPORTS 11TH ANNUAL REPORT 2013 TO 2014 Best Award as Social Work of Tamil Nadu Government of Tamil Nadu DEAF LEADERS FOUNDATION Registered Office : 59, VOC Nagar, Arun Nagar Extension, TVS Nagar, Thadagam Road, Coimbatore , Tamil Nadu, India Website: deafleadersindia.org, deafleaders@gmail.com DEAF VISION TOMORROW / DEAF NEED GROWTH
Best Social Worker K Murali,, Director, DEAF LEADERS, Coimbatore ( Prize: 10gm Gold plated medal+ certificate) People K. Murali of Deaf Leaders is the first person with hearing impairment to win the Best Social Worker Award in Tamil Nadu K. Murali s expression is a mixture of surprise and excitement. He has just returned after bagging the Best Social Worker award from the Chief Minister in Chennai and is still overwhelmed by the experience. Speaking through an interpreter, Murali says winning the award was a pleasant surprise. I did not expect to win it, since I was pitted against more than a hundred other applicants from all over the state. But this will help me expand my training institute, he says. The Deaf Leaders Institute, located in Sai Baba Colony, Coimbatore, gives those with hearing impairment training in English, Tamil and History, apart from training them in tailoring, cooking and computers. Currently operating out of a rented building, Murali plans to shift to his own building which will have a boarding facility for children from remote villages. He hopes that government colleges will introduce sign language in their curriculum. Murali has also directed
and edited a short love story, The Silent Song, which was adjudged the best film at the International Deaf Conference in 2012 at New Delhi. I would like to help children with hearing impairment get a good education and train them till they are employed, he says. The job training provided by Deaf Leaders has already helped a group of such youngsters find work at a café on Avinashi Road. Another group has been cooking and serving food to IT professionals in P.N. Palayam. Plans are afoot to setup more canteens in the city. Deaf Leaders organised a job fair last October through which 220 people with disabilities were placed in various sectors. Murali is now applying for a National Award. If you are honest and hard working, no disability can stop you from achieving what you want to, he says. Felicitation by Dr. N. Mahilngam, Chairman K. Veeramani, general secretary,. Commissioner of Police, Of Sakthi Sugar Ltd Dravida Kazhagam Coimbatore Shri. Velusamy, Differently Abled Association Shri. M. 5 56 th International week of the Deaf First day on Awareness on Sign Promotion In an effort to motivate hearing and speech impaired college students and youth to use sign language, Deaf Leaders in association with South Asia Regional Office of CBM, and Rotary Club of Coimbatore Texcity, organised an awareness programme on sign language promotion here on Friday. The programme was held at Sankara College of Science and Commerce to commemorate the 56 th International Week of the Deaf. More than 35 students with speech and hearing impairment from the host college and other colleges from the city attended the programme. It was inaugurated by Gigi Eapen Cherian, president, Rotary Club of Coimbatore Texcity. Sessions Sessions on development of sign language, positive thinking on sign language, freedom of sign language, and others, were held by resource persons. T.P. Vasantharaman, Managing Trustee of Sankara College of Science and Commerce, Anantadev Das, Founder Member and Chairman, Universal Sanatana Dharma for the Deaf, K. Murali, Director, Deaf Leaders, besides others, addressed the students. Second day on We tell you to learn on Sign Language at Hotel Annpoorna branches

D Cafe at Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore. D Café at Life Spring fitness D Café Team performance - Not everyone heeds a cry for help There are no hard statistics on the employment rate of the hearing impaired. They receive a stipend of Rs 1,000 from the government, but this is an unrealistically meagre amount if they had specific goals to pursue. Perhaps the one person who would hear them is Murali Kuppusamy from Coimbatore. Hearing impaired himself, he set up a little institute at Coimbatore to help provide the hearing-challenged an education, and after drawing insights from his own life experiences, even setting up an NGO called Deaf Leaders to help provide the fraternity a platform from which to get help for their everyday needs. He recently set up D Café at the Life Spring Fitness Centre in Coimbatore to help provide deaf people jobs. He says, I started my work with the deaf in 2002, setting up the institute for the deaf and dumb, to help them further their studies. Sadly, there are only two institutions in Coimbatore that offer a deaf student s degree; it s limited to a B.Com. A hearing impaired person can therefore either take up work as a tailor, or as a help at eateries, or with online BPOs. When asked what they liked doing, it was almost by unanimous vote that they said that they liked to cook and were willing to work at a café. I then approached the Rotary Club in Coimbatore, says Murali, and their spokesperson instantly agreed. He provided us space at
Life Spring, and we set up D Café. We started it with the intention of helping as many deaf people as possible. Set up nearly nine months ago, people have been calling the cafe with orders for outside catering. A well known BPO in Coimbatore is also proving to be a promising prospect as it is looking to start a café within its office. Hopefully, this will see us get further projects and I ll be able to employ more deaf people in the city, Murali says, while putting out a request for a rather humble requirement. If there is anyone willing to help us with kitchen utensils, it will be greatly appreciated, he adds. Murali has been a part of several national and international conferences for the deaf, he established a matrimonial website for the community, provided deaf women an empowerment scheme and has two immediate goals for others like himself. To achieve a unity amongst the deaf community, and provide them with a much needed employment rate, he says, adding that he would also like to establish a TV channel that they can watch. Saranya R, who cleared her Class 12 board exam, is a deaf person in the city who loves cooking and currently works at D Café. I wanted to stand on my own two feet. I love to cook, and when I was given the chance to come here to work, I immediately took it up. I am looking to establish my own eatery someday, she says. by Deccan Chronicle Wedding Our Co-ordinator committees of Mr. Liban Christopher and Krishna Devi married on 17 th May Republic Day 26 th January 2014 K. Murali, Director of DLF was flag hosts on republic day celebrated at Sanakra College, Coimbatore.
