Course structure Examination code Name Higher Education Credits 1011 Language and Culture in the Sign Language Community The form and meaning of signs Sign Language Grammar Analysis of Sign Langguage texts 7.5 Course content This course provides basic knowledge of sign, sentence and text structure in Swedish Sign Language, basic skills in sign and text transcription and in the use of annotation tools, as well as an overview of the status of sign language from an individual and social perspective. Course unit 1: Language and Culture in the Sign Language Community, 7.5 HECs This course provides an introduction to language and communication, to similarities and differences between spoken and signed languages. The course deals with the status of sign language and organizations of the deaf from a historical perspective, language and culture in the multilingual signing community and linguistic variation in sign language. The influence of new technology and ideologies on the signing community are also discussed. This course aims to provide basic knowledge of the form and meaning of signs, as well as of sign formation processes. The course also provides knowledge of the Swedish transcription system and an overview of sign language dictionaries. This course aims to provide basic knowledge of the form and function of sentences, sentence types, word order and non-manual syntactic markers. The course also covers word classes and morphological processes in sign language. This is a translation of the Swedish original Page 1/5

2 This course aims to provide basic knowledge of conversational structure and narrative discourse. The course also gives proficiency in the use of annotation tools for documentation and analysis of sign language material. Learning outcomes - give an account of the main features of the structure of sign language, and of central aspects of the Swedish signing community - describe the structure of signs - give an account of the central grammatical processes of sign language - transcribe and analyse sign language texts. Course unit 1: Language and Culture in the Sign Language Community, 7.5 HECs - discuss the two languages of deaf people and culture in the multilingual signing community. - give an account of central phenomena in the Swedish signing community. - give an account of central aspects of the structure of signs - use the Swedish transcription system - give an account of meaning relations and sign formation processes. - give an account of central aspects of the form and function of sentences - describe word classes and morphological processes - give an account of non-manual syntactic markers. - use tools for transcription/annotation of sign language texts - transcribe sign language texts - give an account of narrative and conversational features of sign language texts. Education Instruction is given in Swedish Sign Language in the form of lectures and exercise sessions/seminars. More detailed information is provided in the course descriptions distributed at the beginning of each course unit. Forms of examination a. The examination is in the form of i) written exams; ii) take-home exams; iii) active participation while instruction is given. b. Students will receive letter grades on a seven-point scale on the whole course, as well as on the Course units 1-4: A = Excellent B = Very Good C = Good D = Satisfactory E = Adequate Fx = Inadequate F = Totally Inadequate c. The assessment criteria for the course units will be distributed at the beginning of each course. d. In order to pass the course, the grade E or higher is required for the Course units (1-4). e. If students fail a course unit and receive the grade Fx or F on an examination, they are allowed to retake the This is a translation of the Swedish original Page 2/5

3 examination up to four times, as long as the course is still provided, in order to obtain a grade of E or higher. Students who receive a grade of E or higher on an examination may not retake the examination to attain a higher grade. If students receive the grade Fx or F on an examination twice by the same examiner, they are entitled to have a new examiner appointed to determine the grade on the examination, unless there are any specific reasons against it. Such a request should be addressed to the Board of the Department. Interim If this course is discontinued, or its contents are substantially altered, students have the right to be examined according to this syllabus once per semester for three further semesters. However, the restrictions mentioned above still apply. Limitations This course may not be included in a degree together with a course, taken in Sweden or elsewhere, of identical or partially similar content.
